Magnificent defense stood up to the early spinute chal lenge and Tornado offense clicked in the second and third periods as the No. 1 rated Mcdfords turned back the high ranked Capital city team. South, which rated second, fourth and fifth in polls, en dangered the Tornado goal line twice nn first period pass interceptions. Those two bids were thwarted by the Medford Bandits and the Saxons were 1 not again a real threat, i The Hurricane, itself, turned an interception into louch 1 down. It tallied off a Saxon j fumble and virtually ground out its other score. Jack I Lowery punched one - yard, Dan Miles raced 28 and Mike Barnes ran 12 for the Medford markers and Miles booted two of three conversion tries. Unseored Upon Medford now will enter the Southern Oregon conference chase undefeated and unticd and uircorcd upon. It has won three games. Four succes sive packs by Lowery put the hall on the five for first down. Offside set the Hurricane back to the 10. But, the Medford's boomed Lowery over right tackle to the nine. On the next play the Tornados powered over the middle for a score. Medford went for a TD the next time il got the ball but had to hurry things along be cause time was runing out. A pass Interception by Bill Hous ton gave the host club the ball at mid-field. Two running plays collected six yards and a pass was incomplete. On fourth down, Miles passed to Hammons. The end, whom Coach Spicgclbcrg termed "the best player on the field" for his blocking work, was stopped on the 26. The play had gained 18 yards. Then, the Tornado slickcred the Saxons. Action swung to the west side of the field. Miles faked a pass then burst like lightning to the east and skirted right end for the score. Twenty-one seconds were left in the half. Stanford, Calif.-IUPD-Orcgon State, instead of being pushed into the bay as expected, handed massive Stanford a 27-0 shocker Saturday behind the quarterbacking of Terry Baker who gained a total of 211 yards and scored two touchdowns. Both of Baker's tallies came in the second period as the Beavers, outweighed an aver age of 37 pounds per man, put together touchdown marches of 80 and 91 yards. Then Dan Espalin, a five foot seven inch sophomore, ac counted for the third Beaver touchdown in the fourth pe riod when he picked off a des peration pass by Stanford's Clark Weaver and raced it back 16 yards. A 14-yard pass from Gordon Queen to Len Frketich ac counted for the final Beaver score with 11 seconds to play. Stanford went into the game a 6'2-point favorite aft er stunning Michigan State last week. But it was the In dians who were dazed this time by a valiant Beaver for ward wan mat looked like a bunch of middlewcights tak ing on a heavyweight. Southpaw Baker gave Ore gon State its first touchdown by sweeping left end from four yards out, then tacked on a two-point conversion. Baker, who gained 169 yards passing and 42 rushing, next tallied from the one yard line 18 seconds before the half ended to climax a 9-yard march. The Beavers 1 had taken over after Allan , Curr fumbled a pitchout from ' quarterback Steve Turlow on the Oregon State nine, j Stanford never quite got in to the ball game, which was dominated throughout by a ! team which had bowed to the I Indians last year 34-0 and took a 28-8 lacing from Iowa last i Saturday. The Indians' deepest pene tration was to the nine-yard line in the first half and the , closest they came to a score was during the second period '. when an attempted 45-yard j field goal by Stan Lmdskog struck the crossbar and fell back. After Lindskog's field goal 1 attempt failed, Oregon State took over on its 20 and went 80 yards for the first touch down with a 34-yard pass from Baker to Vern Burke putting 0 0 n 0 1227 Stanford fl n Orecon State 0 15 bconng: OSU Baker 4 run (Baker run) OSU Baker 1 run (Ankersen kick 1 OSU Espalin IS pass interception (kick failed) OSU Frketich 14 pass from Queen irun failed) Attendance: 26,500 .
