Union high downed Crater 25
to 13 Saturday afternoon in a

was too much to overcome.
Klamath touchdowned
' twice in each of the first two
quarters and Crater tabulated
once each in the third and
fourth.
Mike Bender opened the
pointmaking with a 45-yard
jaunt on a double reverse and
a pass got the extra marker.
He then ran for the second
TD on a 70-yard punt return.
Bob Williams sneaked two
yards for a touchdown and
Greg Scott slanted four yards
for the other.
Joe Thomas went five yards
for a Crater touchdown and

by Mail Tribune photographer Bob Vroman
Lowery had kicked up chalk on South Sa
lem 16-yard line. And, that's where officials
called the ball dead. The Black Tornado had
just had fourth down and eight to go on
the 32. Lowery forced out of bounds again
just after the photo was taken. Saxon play
er making the stop is identified as Wally
Ogdahl. On ground is Don Sheldon and
also shown is Salem's Gary Allen (19).

Medford's Black Tornado
averted early calamity here
Friday night and whirled back
to overcome the Saxons of
South Salem high 20 to 0 in a
prestige combat of Oregon
prep football powers.
Magnificent defense stood
up to the early spinute chal
lenge and Tornado offense
clicked in the second and
third periods as the No. 1
rated Mcdfords turned back
the high ranked Capital city
team.
South, which rated second,
fourth and fifth in polls, en
dangered the Tornado goal
line twice nn first period pass
interceptions. Those two bids
were thwarted by the Medford
Bandits and the Saxons were
1 not again a real threat,
i The Hurricane, itself, turned
an interception into louch
1 down. It tallied off a Saxon
j fumble and virtually ground
out its other score. Jack
I Lowery punched one - yard,
Dan Miles raced 28 and Mike
Barnes ran 12 for the Medford
markers and Miles booted two
of three conversion tries.
Unseored Upon
Medford now will enter the
Southern Oregon conference
chase undefeated and unticd
and uircorcd upon. It has won
three games. South Salem was
handed its first setback in
four gridiron engagements.
"It was a good lough game
! and a good experience," said
Medford head tutor Fred
Spiogclberg about the Saxon
joust. "I'm glad to get out of
it." He added, "We learned
a Int."

Both conflicts are set for
7 p.m.
The GP Modlord mix is the
first of two between the clubs
this season.
A Wednesday evening fra

Rockets and the St. Mary's
reserves.
IININGER'S
READY-MIX
A 44-yard punt by Med
ford's No. 44, Tim Murray,
helped set up the first Tor
nado touchdown. The ball
barely dented the end zone
after almost stopping short of
it. While, the pighide was
brought out to the 20-yard
line, the kick served to get
South Salem in the hole. The
Saxons made seven yards in
three tries then suffered a de
laying penalty. Lowery re
turned Warren Kcllicut's punt
eight yards to the South 48
yard line.
The Big Wind took 13 plays
to score, hampered by one
penalty.
Pass Sparks Drive
A screen pass on fourth
down and eight yards to go
kept the drive alive. Miles'
aerial to Lowery gained 16
yards to the IB. Four succes
sive packs by Lowery put the
hall on the five for first down.
Offside set the Hurricane back
to the 10. But, the Medford's
boomed Lowery over right
tackle to the nine. On the next
play the Tornados powered
over the middle for a score.
Medford went for a TD the
next time il got the ball but
had to hurry things along be
cause time was runing out. A
pass Interception by Bill Hous
ton gave the host club the ball
at mid-field. Two running
plays collected six yards and
a pass was incomplete.
On fourth down, Miles
passed to Hammons. The end,
whom Coach Spicgclbcrg
termed "the best player on
the field" for his blocking
work, was stopped on the 26.
The play had gained 18 yards.
Then, the Tornado slickcred
the Saxons. Action swung to
the west side of the field.
Miles faked a pass then burst
like lightning to the east and
skirted right end for the score.
Twenty-one seconds were left
in the half.
Brewer Recovers Ball
In the late third pnncl
Salem stymied Mrdfnrd on the
Saxon 40. Murray booted out
of bounds on the Salem eight.
Gary Papenfus cracked the
middle of the line and fum
bled. Chris Brewer fell on the
ball for Mrdfnrd.
Lowery gamed to the 12.
Then, Salem was duped again
as Mike Barnes packing with
Frank Van Pelt out ahead
zoomed around left end to the
goal.
Wally Ogdahl almost scored
for South when the fray was
just minutes old. He snared a
pass from Medford's Barnes
and returned the ball to the
Medford three where Barnes
l-.nockod him out of bounds.

ping penalty put Salem back
on the 18. Dave Johnson
crashed to the 12. But, Gary
Allen lost to the 14 and two
plays later Medford took over
on its nine.
Allen Snitches
The Tornado fought out
to the 28. A Miles' pass was
snitched by Allen of the Sax
ons and Salem had the ball on
the Medford 37. South got to
the 19 but suffered successive
one and eight-yard losses and
Medford's Gary Griffin fell on
the ball on the 28 as Allen
fumbled on fourth down.
Medford threatened in the
fourth quarter on a pass in
terception by Rich Knight.
The Tornado moved from the
South 49 to the two-yard line
with three first downs along
the way. Mike Watkins went
for 10 yards and Mike Neat
hamcr for 11. A backficld in
motion infraction set the Big
Wind back to the seven. Gains
by Ron Edmonds a nd Ron
Calkins brought the ball back
to two for fourth down and
goal to go. But, Calkins fum
bled on the next play and
South took over on the eight.
In the late part of the final
stanza Allen intercepted a
Ncathamer pass on the Tor
nado 35 and carried to the
Medford 18. Allen fumbled
on Larry Sander's tackle and
Garner Haupert fell on the
ball for Medford.
Johnson Held
Medford defense, which was
overall a strong team effort
although linebackers Bill En
yart and Griffin headed the
tackle charts, limited South
to 80 yards on the ground and
2!) in the air.- A counle of
Saxon passes, however, could i
have proved damaging, had !
they not been dropped. Sa-1
lem's halfback Johnson was I
limited to 39 yards on 13 I
carries. It was the first time
in four games this season he
had been held lo les-s than 100
yards.
Medford ball packing was 1
divided among 10 backs with I
Miles topping the yardage on
SI for seven tries-helped by i
his TD run. He completed four
of nine passes for 71 yards.
Ogdahl. Papenfus, George
Yielding. Courtney Cloyd and
Dick Schram led the South
defense.
"Our kids had a lot of re
spect for South Salem." said
Spicgclbcrg in summing up
the game. They found the Sax
ons a hard bitting crew and
their linemen quick for big
men.
Stanford, Calif.-IUPD-Orcgon
State, instead of being pushed
into the bay as expected,
handed massive Stanford a
27-0 shocker Saturday behind
the quarterbacking of Terry
Baker who gained a total of
211 yards and scored two
touchdowns.
Both of Baker's tallies came
in the second period as the
Beavers, outweighed an aver
age of 37 pounds per man, put
together touchdown marches
of 80 and 91 yards.
Then Dan Espalin, a five
foot seven inch sophomore, ac
counted for the third Beaver
touchdown in the fourth pe
riod when he picked off a des
peration pass by Stanford's
Clark Weaver and raced it
back 16 yards.
A 14-yard pass from Gordon
Queen to Len Frketich ac
counted for the final Beaver
score with 11 seconds to play.
Stanford went into the
game a 6'2-point favorite aft
er stunning Michigan State
last week. But it was the In
dians who were dazed this
time by a valiant Beaver for
ward wan mat looked like a
bunch of middlewcights tak
ing on a heavyweight.
With Ross Cariga, a 189
pound guard, leading the way,
Oregon State usually out
charged the Stanford line and
messed up its passing attack.
Southpaw Baker gave Ore
gon State its first touchdown
by sweeping left end from
four yards out, then tacked on
a two-point conversion.
Baker, who gained 169
yards passing and 42 rushing,
next tallied from the one
yard line 18 seconds before
the half ended to climax a
9-yard march. The Beavers 1
had taken over after Allan ,
Curr fumbled a pitchout from '
quarterback Steve Turlow on
the Oregon State nine, j
Stanford never quite got in
to the ball game, which was
dominated throughout by a !
team which had bowed to the I
Indians last year 34-0 and took
a 28-8 lacing from Iowa last i
Saturday.
The Indians' deepest pene
tration was to the nine-yard
line in the first half and the ,
closest they came to a score
was during the second period '.
when an attempted 45-yard j
field goal by Stan Lmdskog
struck the crossbar and fell
back.
After Lindskog's field goal 1
attempt failed, Oregon State
took over on its 20 and went
80 yards for the first touch
down with a 34-yard pass from
Baker to Vern Burke putting
