The Eagk-., reached the Phoenix 17-yard line twice in -the first and third periods, only to lose the ball on downs. Phoenix got to the EP 15 in the third panel and in the fourth the Pirates' Dave Johnson crossed the goal on a 38-yard run only to have a clipping penalty nul lify a score. The Pirates reached the Eagle 25 in the fourth quar ter but a Dale Chamberlain pass interception stopped the march and EP got the ball on its 25. Kickoff Recovered Eagle Point quick kicking, rather than booting from regular punt formation, and a short kickoff were factors in holding the Pirates down. The Phoenix club could set up no long kick returns. Bob Henderson of EP recovered Bob Bonner's short kickoff at the start of Ihe second half. Jon Granby, Johnson, Pick Richey and Ron Williams were Phoenix stalwarts in the tough defensive game. For Eagle Point Dale Cham zcrlain made 12 tackles, John Lindcr 10 and Mike House nine. COSTS LESS THAN OWNING! SOUTHERN OREGON LEASE CO. Sat Jim Colaman at Crater Laka Motors Bldg. 6TH & FIR MEDFORD Ph. 773-7591 By MARTIN LADER UPI Sporlt Writer Top-ranked Ohio State saw its bid for a second straight undefeated season snapped un expectedly Saturday when UCLA rallied in the final min utes of play to thwart the Buckeyes, 9-7. Sophomore quarterback Larry Zcno, who earlier had missed on an extra point at tempt, more than atoned for this lapse by kicking a 24-yard field goal with one minute and 35 seconds left to play to pro vide the Bruins with the most startling upset of the 1962 col lege football season. Two other members of the nation's lop 10 teams also went down to defeat as fifth- ranked Georgia Tech was up set by Louisiana State, 10-7, and Army fell before Michi gan, 14-7. Southern California, al though ranked sixth by the United Press International board of coaches, was a six- point underdog to Iowa but still managed to overcome the Hawkeycs, 7-0: seventh-rank ed Mississippi blasted Hous ton, 40-7; and eighth-ranked Washington routed Kansas State, 41-0. Other Scoros In other leading games, Pur due defeated Notre Dame, 24-6; Duke rallied from a three - touchdown deficit to beat Florida, 28-21; halfback Ron Rubick raced for three louchrowns to lead Michigan Slate to a ,18-6 victory over North Carolina; Minnesota toppled Navy, 21-0, in the first football meeting between the two schools; Nebraska outlast ed Iowa State, 36-22, as Dennis Claridgc ran for three touch downs and passed for another; Missouri struck early and then held on for a 17-7 decision over Arizona; and quarterback Jim Traficant hit on three long scoring passes to enable Pittsburgh to edge California, 26-24. Ohio State, which won eight straight after being held to an opening game tie by Texas Christian last season, scored its only touchdown against UCLA on a six-yard pass from Joe Sparma to Matthew Sncll. The extra point by Dick Van Raaphorst looked like it would be the difference as the midwesterners refused to al low the home side to mount an attack. UCLA made three great goal-line stands, each time stopping the Buckeyes on the one-yard line. And when the Bruins mounted one of their few offensive drives in the final period, they capitalized on the field goal for their ex citing victory. Halfback Jerry Stovall was the difference in LSU's upset over Georgia Tech as, he streaked 98 yards with the second half kickoff. After the Yellow Jackets tied the score in the final quarter, Lynn Am adee won it for the Bengals with a 24-yard field goal. Michigan took advantage of a bungling Army defense to register its first triumph of the season while handing the Ca dets their initial defeat. Half backs Jack Strobel and Dave Raimey tallied touchdowns for WELD'S LET YOUR FEET FEEL THE WONDERFUL DIFFERENCE IN OPEN FRIDAY NITES Till 9 $31.95 2r J (WHIPPETS ) MADE EXCLUSIVELY BY wright RIGHT IlllTEIS open up a wonderful new world of living! Pnona 772-2123 Henley's Hornets Nip Rogue River Rogue River-Rogue River's Chieftains continued to make Rogue league football rivals sit up and take notice here on Friday night. They gave the league pacing Henley gridders one terrific battle before bowing by the slim margin of a conversion point. Henley tipped the Chief tains 7 to 6. It was the best played game for Rogue River in the four years he's been with the school system, declared Coach Wayne Miscncr, who took over the head tutoring reins this fall. The fracas was scoreless un til the end of the third period when an Earl Allbritton to Joe Kerns pass went 66-yards for a touchdown and Steve Roi ling kicked the bonus point. Scored In Fourth Rogue River scored in the fourth canto on an Alan Gates one-yard dive which capped a surge of 60 yards. Jack Salters had made 10 and 15-yard gains along the way and Gates ripped off 25 yards on a re verse to the two. RR went over in three plays from there. The Chiefs penetrated three other times deep into Hornet territory, twice to around the 15 and once to around the 20. Rogue River, after a fumble recovery was on the Henley 15 at the end of the game. Ex cept for the touchdown thrown, Henley was never within the Chief 30-yard line. Misener reported that the Chiefs played a good hard tackling and blocking and hard running game against "the toughest ball club we've faced" and declared that the RR crew hud "nothing to be ashamed of" in losing to the Hornets. Neither side made many mistakes, he said. Comparative statistics were not available due to mix up but RR appeared to move the ball hotter than the Hornets who were held on the ground and made most of their yard age on down and out passes. Bob Stielil, with 1 1 tackles and eight nssisls, and Hob Pentocosl and Larry Craig headed the Chief defense. "Southern Oregon'i Oldest Show Concern" PREP FOOTBALL HtlllAY (i,Ml S Modison l.t.
