Bur Dealers Report No Wild Financing The current strength in the used-car market can be traced, at least in part, to easier fi nancing, an Automotive News survey of dealers and finance sources shows. The changei do not by any meant constitute a shift to wild end questionable financing. Nor are the changes evident In all sec tions of the nation. The recent trends boil down to this: On the average, fi nance sources will accept a used-car note which runs a little longer. In some cases, they will accept a downpay mcnl that is a bit thinner. Both comparisons are with '61 conditions. All finance sources checked reported that their average used-car not runs for a long er period than it did a year ago. The change is quite small. On the average, loans may run for a month longer now than they did a year ago. Even e small change like this can be important. The longer repayment period can cut the monthly pay ment and mean the differ ence between a sale and a used car still sitting on the lot. In a spot check of dealers, Automotive News found that 39 per cent feel that it is easi er to finance used cars than it was a year ago. Thirty-eight per cent of the replying deal ers reported that longer loan; are being approved and 63 per cent said that downpay- ment requirements have been eased. The '63 Tempest, which goes on sale Oct. 4, is five inches longer and two inches wider than its predecessor, and it offers a powerful new V-8 engine as an optional feature. Wheelhase remains at 112 inches, but the '63 version is 194.3 inches long and 74.2 inches wide. It has a wider track, too. Rear tread Is 58 inches, an increase of 1.2, and front tread is 57.3, a gain ot half an inch. The new engine is a cast iron 326-cubic-inch V-8 that develops 260 horsepower. It replaces an aluminum eight of 215 cubic inches and 185 horsepower that was or dered by less than 2 per cent of Tempest buyers dur ing the last two yean. The basic four-cylinder Tempest engine has a lighter block. Displacement is 194 5 cubic inches, and horsepower ranges from 115 to 186. Horse j power started at 110 last year. I ' i Trmpcst, like the largrr Pontiac, has a split grille for j'63. Body panels are sculp I lured, and there are two rear treatments The regular Tem pest has dual laillights set vertically on each side, while the LrMans has wide tail j lamps set in horizontal pan el. j The LeMans is being mer chandised as a separate series this year. In '62, Tempest of fered a "LcMans option," which Included bucket scats and special exterior and in terior trim. Tempest has several engi neering and mechenical re finements. A revised suspen sion system is said to lm prore ride and handling; brakes ere self adjusting, and Delcolron alternetor is standard on all models. The automatic transmission is fully hydraulic In all gears and now has a "park" fea ture. The fuel lank capacity There is no doubt that easl r financing makes used cars easier to. sell, ine cur- rent strength in the used-car j market would not be there I if finance sources were get ting more strict, rather than more liberal, on what they will accept. New compact cars compete directly in price with lalc- model used units of the stand ard size. The compacts have had a tremendous advantage in that new-car financing typi cally can be obtained over longer periods than used-car notes. More liberal financing of used cars may now be wip ing out a part of this advan tage. New-car sales, used-car sales and the financing of both is a huge circle of chickens and eggs and it is always difficult to deter mine what comes first what is the cause and what is the eflect. For example, the current strength in the used-car mar ket could be considered the cause ot the easier finance terms on used care. In a strong market, a repossession is less of a problem and the finance sources can be more liberal. Two dealers one in Ohio and another in Canada came up with another explan ation of what came first. Both dealers said .that the many sources of financing are com peting keenly for the avail able business. They accept tlu more liberal deals, making a higher level ot sales possible. The Canadian said lha'. bank efforts to gel a bigger slice of the business that for merly went to finance compa nies was the heart of the com-petilion.-Automotice News, Sept. 17. has been increased to 20 gal lons, compared with 16 last year. Pontiac says improved In terior insulation with a fully insulated dash shroud has re duced interior noise. The chassis lubrication interval has been extended to 12,000 miles or every six months. tachometer is available a factory-installed option, and radios are transistorized. The heater has a new air out let duct for belter air distribu tion, and a new air condition er puts the evaporator out of sight under the right side of the instrument panel. Interiors have been re styled, and the new instru ment panel features round ed knobs en all controls, in struments clustered togeth er for easy viewing and glare-free instrument lens. Making LeMans a separate series gives Tempest seven models this year, compared with five in '62. Here's the new lineup: Standard Four-door se dan, two-door coupe, two-door sport coupe, convertible and four-door wagon. LeMans Two door sport coupe and convertible. Both have bucket scats. New peinting process , adjusleble steering wheel . . . transistorised ignition optional . . . new rooflines and front and rear styling . . . AM-FM radio , . . Del colron alternator . light er V-B engine . . . improved suspension , self-adjusting brekei. Ponliac sales are up 47 per cent this year, and dealers hope to continue that excel lent performance with the '63 models they will place on dis play Oct. 4. The new models have re claimed the popular split grille, and the dual headlights are positioned vertically in stead of horizontally. Body panels and rooflines are new, side trim has been changed and the tailllghts are located In the fenders. Other feetures of Pon tile'! stenderd-sised line In clude redesigned front end and rear suspension, self ad justing brakes, a lighter V-8 engine and new "bike-and-bake" painting process. In the painting method, a coat of finish color Is applied, then baked In permit the paint to "set up" for finish sanding. After sanding, the painted area is cleaned and baked again at a higher temperature which causes the acrylic lac quer to rcflow and fill in minor imperfections. The suspension has been re vised by using rubber instead of steel bushings in the front upper control arm shaft. Pon tiac says this eliminates the need for lubrication and im proves the ride. A Delcolron alternator is standard this year, and the heating and air-conditioning systems have been improved. A now option is an adjustable steering wheel which may be tilled in one of seven posi tions. Buyers also may choose a combination AM-FM radio. An engineering innova tion Is a transistorised igni tion system. It has no break er points or condenser. Pontiac says its edvantages Include improved perform ance, quicker starting and hotter spark at the plug. The system will be available on all premium-fuel engine packages. Pontiac's basic engine is a 389-cubic-lnch unit. Horse power, with standard trans mission, is 215 for Catallnas and Star Chiefs, 235 for Bon nevilles and 303 for the Grand Prix. Various other transmis sion and carburetor comblnn tlons boost horsepower to 313. Also available is a 421-cubic-inch engine with horse power ratings of 353 and 370. Pontiacs come in Hiree sizes. The Calalina and Grand Prix are built on a 120-Inch wheel base and are 21 1.9 inches long. Star Chiefs and Bonncvllles have a 123-inch whcelbase and are 218 9 inches from bumper to bumper.
