Ashland Grizzlies Travel To - Ashland Ashland High school's gridiron crew is "just about as ready as its going to be" for its first game of the 1962 season according to new Head Coach Marsh Jones. The Grizzlies go to Red ding, Calif., on Saturday. They engage Shasta High school there that night. .Jones, looking toward a building program here, has described his squad as "pret ty green. There are not many experienced boys." The new mentor reported that the Grizzlies are coming "a little slower than I'm used to." Nevertheless, he said his Bruin charges are "trying jnd eager." He declared, "I'm fretty pleased with the kids, hey're putting forth a full effort." Sophomores Bid : There could be as many as five sophomores in the start ing lineup. Ankle Injury Hobbles Funston Corvallis tBPD The Oregon State traveling squad scored a 23-0 victory over a team of redshirts, substitutes and in eligible players in a three quarter length scrimmage Thursday. Four Beaver regulars, in cluding quarterback Terry Baker, saw little or no action. Baker has infection on his leg, halfback Leroy Whittle is nursing a pulled muscle, and fullback Bruce Williams and tackle Jim Funston have in jured ankles. Whittle played on defense and the others sat out the scrimmage. All are expected to be ready for Oregon State's opener in Portland Sept. 22 against Iowa State. Only 11 youths were on the 1961 squad. There are six leftermen and all will be in the starting crew. They are Neal Ellis, quarterback; Jim Lytic, half back; Jim McConochie, half back; Dan Edmonson, end; Monte Stratton, center, and David Webb, guard. Other starters may be Bob Cope land, end, and Ron Smith or Mike Mitchell, guard. McConochie is a 215-pound-er and Smith a 135-pound speedster. They switch posi tions at times. New coach this fall is Con nie McQuerrey. The Packers are 17-point favorites. Cleveland is a 3-point fav orite over New York. In other NFL openers on Sunday: The San Francisco Forty Niners are the choice by 7 points over the Chicago Bears. The Baltimore Colts are 7 point picks over the Los An geles Rams. The Philadelphia Eagles are the choice by 10 over the St. Louis Cardinals. The Detroit Lions are fav ored at home by 7 over the Pittsburgh Steelers. And the Washington Red skins and Dallas Cowboys are rated even. Louisville Knocked Out of IL Playoff United Prm International Frank Leja of Louisville knocked season champion In dianalopis out of the Ameri can association playoffs last night with a grand slam ho mer and two-run double for a 6-4 victory. Omaha stayed alive with I 5-3 win over Denver. The Bears must win one of two remaining games with the Dodgers for the right to meet Louisville in the best-of-seven association final. The survivor will then go against the winner of the in ternational league playoff in the little world series. Oaklanders In Scrape At Phoenix Phoenix A pair of three year iettermen lead the Oak land High football team which is guest of Phoenix to night in the season opener for both schools. They are Jim Archer, end, and Wayne Germond, guard. Bo Cannon, a two-year vet, cogs the backfield from quar terback. Coach Chuck Halstead of the Oakers reported that he has 10 Iettermen back, includ ing two boys who received awards although sidelined by injuries. . Drop to Class B Sources here say there are Indications that Oakland has a strong contingent, Halstead, nevertheless voices the opin ion that the Oakers are step ping a bit out of their class. Oakland like Phoenix -was A-2 last year. However, en rollment has dropped and the Douglas county school is back in Class B. It is now a mem ber of the Bico-Trico B league. The Oakers last year played a mixed A-2 and B slate and had a 4-4 record. Phoenix is defending Ore gon A-2 champion, sharing the mantle as the result of a tie finale last fall. The Oregon Journal A-2 coaches has listed Phoenix No. 1 in pre-season ratings. Mays Released From Hospital Cincinnati fiiPB Center fielder Willie Mays is ached' uled to be released from Christ hospital today and probably will be back In ac tion with the San Francisco Giants within 24 hours. Mays, who collapsed in the Giants' dugout Wednesday night, was reported to be suf fering from mental and physi cal fatigue. Trainer Frank Bowman of the Giants said Willie was "feeling chipper and eager to get back into action." Frank, bidding for his sec ond consecutive most valuable player award, leads the NL with a .341 batting average, ranks second m runs batted in with 129, is third in homers with 38 and has matched a club record of 47 doubles in one season. Wields Big Bat Robinson swung a big stick for the second straight game Thursday night when the Reds dealt the San Francisco Gi ants' pennant hopes a crip pling blow by beating them. 7-2. The loss, the Giants sec ond in a row to the Reds, dropped them two full games behind the idle first-place Los Angeles Dodgers with only two weeks left in the season. Robinson, who hit two hom ers against the Giants Wednes day night, hit a double and a single Thursday night as the Reds routed Mike McCor mick in four inning. Jim O'Toole pitched a four hitter and struck out five to win his 16th game for the Reds, while the loss was McCormick's fourth. The Giants open a four game series in Pittsburgh to night while the Dodgers start a three-game set in Chicago.
