McAbee, present head basketball and assistant foot ball coach at Brookings, caught 23 passes for 369 yards his junior year at SOC in 1958. In 1959, his senior year, snared 20 aerials for 210 yards. He is an ex-Talent high athlete. Came time Saturday is 8 p.m. Red Raider Eleven To Oppose Alumni Ashland - The lettermcn stocked Southern Oregon col lege football team will be out after its second straight con quest of the SOC alumni this Saturday night when the two teams vie In a pre-scason con test under the lights on Fuller Field here. Game time for the game is 8 p.m. The Red Raider alumns are reported to have revenge in mind for this year's battle, especially after absorbing a 20-8 defeat . last season. But Coach Lou Manor's griddcrs will be up against what Raider chief Al Akins feels is his "best team here in my eight years at Southern Oregon." With no less than 21 let termen forming the nucleus for this year's team, Akins has good reason to feel this way about his club. Only Two Lost His potent offensive unit lost only two members,. both linemen, from the 1981 squad. Doyle Bransom, ex'-Jack-sonville and Kcrm Bennett, ex-Crater, seem set again at halfbacks while big A 1 Barnes, 205 pound senior also from Crater is ready to go at fullback. The quarterback post will be handled by junior passing star, Doug Olscn, who gained all-confreence honors as a so phomore. He has both Dave Hughes and Howard Hartman as aerial targets again this year, besides the potent run ning of Bennett, Bransom and Barnes to back him up. Otherwise, the Raider of fensive line will include so phomore Glen Moses -at, one tackle, another sophomore, Larry Ryerson at one guard, and Junior George Moses at Center. Akins' charges ran through another two drills Thursday and was tall off practice ses sions today. Crater Encounters Bend This Evening In Dedicatory Mix Central Point - Crater High's Comets, contending in the initial varsity football game on their own school site, kick off their 1962 sea son tonight against the Lava Bears of Bend. "I think we are at the starting gate and we are ready to go," said Crater Coach Keith Johnson. This is also dedication night for the Comets, their school and fans. Lights and a new grandstand have been added to the 'ield which over past years has been used just for practice. Crater has a stadium all its own. This sta dium and the school district wide community effort which went into it will be dedicated. Ceremonies are set for 7:30 p.m. ' with Glenn Jackson, Mcdford, chairman of the state highway commission, as main speaker. The football tangle is billed for 8:30 p.m. Wait and Sat On just what can be ex pected from the Comets after three weeks of preparation, Coach Johnson had this to say: "We II have to wait and see. ' This will be the first grid iron meeting of the Comets and the Bears. Crater has a heft line, particularly in its core, and a group of adapt able backs to run its split T. Medford high's Black Tor-1 nado headed north today in tent on showing that this it a different year with a dif ferent team and that the past is not always a reliable meas ure of the future. ". . , They will be tough. That's tradition down Med ford way. But The Dalles can be tougher." So wrote Rod Geier, sports editor of The Dalles Chroni cle. No doubt, coaches at the north central Oregon high school have been trying to convince their players with this theme. Medford's Black Tornado football aggregation storms into The Dalles for a meeting with the Indians at 8 o'clock tonight. Films Viewed Geier made his comment after seeing films of last year's fracas between the two schools at Medford. Medford mentor Fred Spiegelberg sent the movies to Coach Keith Tucker at The Dalles as a courtesy. The sports writer said that he agreed with Tucker that the "southern state grid gi ant" could be humbled and that the Indian team could be a giant killer. Said Geier further: "From the film, the Torna do's strength appeared to be its relentless pursuit of a ball carrier during scrimmages and kickoffs and down line blocking with pronounced double teaming, setting up runs up the middle. This reportedly was the original date set with the change to Saturday made when it was found that Glide would not have lights in stalled. Two Advanced In Judo Ranks Darwin Moore and Tony Rambo were promoted from first to second degree blue belt on Monday after the Monday night workout of Medford Judo academy. The two have two ranks be hind them and will work now toward third degree. Any interested is welcome to attend academy sessions, as a visitor or participant. The academy is located at Phoe nix. Sessions are Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays from 7 to 9 p.m. From 15 to 20 members have been partici pating nightly. PARSONS MOTORS, Stock Cars Will Race At Speedway A field of more than 30 stock cars and jalopies race this Sunday afternoon at the Medford speedway at White City. Although slightly slower than their counterparts, the hardtops and modified racers, the stock cars and jalopies still provide excitement as they gun around the one fourth mile oval amid many bumps and near misses. From last Sunday's interest in this race, officials expect some real good races. Crock Hunter, veteran hard top driver from past years, will pilot the No. 15 car, spon sored by Walt's Lithia Motors. Ashland. Last Sunday Hunter was top winner in the stock division. He gunned past all comers in the heat races and the main event. Out of town entries are ex pected from Klamath Falls. Roseburg, Grants Pass and Yreka. Entries may be cars of any make or model. All glass ex cept windshields must be re moved and all drivers must use safety harnesses.
