building program here, has
described his squad as "pret
ty green. There are not many
experienced boys."
The new mentor reported
that the Grizzlies are coming
"a little slower than I'm used
to." Nevertheless, he said his
Bruin charges are "trying
jnd eager." He declared, "I'm
fretty pleased with the kids,
hey're putting forth a full
effort."

Baker has infection on his leg,
halfback Leroy Whittle is
nursing a pulled muscle, and
fullback Bruce Williams and
tackle Jim Funston have in
jured ankles. Whittle played
on defense and the others sat
out the scrimmage.
All are expected to be ready
for Oregon State's opener in
Portland Sept. 22 against
Iowa State.

squad.
There are six leftermen and
all will be in the starting
crew. They are Neal Ellis,
quarterback; Jim Lytic, half
back; Jim McConochie, half
back; Dan Edmonson, end;
Monte Stratton, center, and
David Webb, guard. Other
starters may be Bob Cope
land, end, and Ron Smith or
Mike Mitchell, guard.
McConochie is a 215-pound-er
and Smith a 135-pound
speedster. They switch posi
tions at times.
New coach this fall is Con
nie McQuerrey.

terback. Coach Chuck Halstead of
the Oakers reported that he
has 10 Iettermen back, includ
ing two boys who received
awards although sidelined by
injuries. .
Drop to Class B
Sources here say there are
Indications that Oakland has
a strong contingent, Halstead,
nevertheless voices the opin
ion that the Oakers are step
ping a bit out of their class.
Oakland like Phoenix -was
A-2 last year. However, en
rollment has dropped and the
Douglas county school is back
in Class B. It is now a mem

league. The Oakers last year
played a mixed A-2 and B
slate and had a 4-4 record.
Phoenix is defending Ore

Cincinnati Reds' tenure as Na
tional league champions but
it's no fault of one-man-gang

It anything, his stature has
grown bigger and bigger as
the Reds' chances to repeat
have grown smaller and smal
ler. And when it comes time
for the experts to evaluate
the league's most valuable
player candidates they 11 be
looking at the fanciest set of
figures since Sophia Loren hit
these shores.
Frank, bidding for his sec
ond consecutive most valuable
player award, leads the NL
with a .341 batting average,
ranks second m runs batted
in with 129, is third in homers
with 38 and has matched a
club record of 47 doubles in
one season.
Wields Big Bat
Robinson swung a big stick
for the second straight game
Thursday night when the Reds
dealt the San Francisco Gi
ants' pennant hopes a crip
pling blow by beating them.
7-2. The loss, the Giants sec
ond in a row to the Reds,
dropped them two full games
behind the idle first-place Los
Angeles Dodgers with only
two weeks left in the season.
Robinson, who hit two hom
ers against the Giants Wednes
day night, hit a double and
a single Thursday night as
the Reds routed Mike McCor
mick in four inning. Jim
O'Toole pitched a four hitter
and struck out five to win his
16th game for the Reds, while
the loss was McCormick's
fourth.
The Giants open a four
game series in Pittsburgh to
night while the Dodgers start
a three-game set in Chicago.
