Lowell Dean (Knackstedt photo) Church Ceremony Held First Christian church was the setting of the marriage of Miss Karen Ann Simcox end Lowell Dean Saturday, Aug. 18. The bride is a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Simcox, 1224 Winchester avenue, and the bridegroom is a son of Mr. and Mrs. John H. Dean, 2905 Oakridge avenue. The Rev. Fredrick R. Evans read the double ring ceremony at 8 o'clock in the evening. About 175 guests attended. An arch of lighted candles and yellow and white gladioli decorated the church. Miss Marilyn Shephard was at the organ, and Miss Julia Gandt sang. Given in marriage by her father, the bride wore a gown of white taffeta designed with bell skirt, three-quarter length sleeves, and scalloped neck line. Her elbow length veil was held by a taffeta rose, and she wore a single strand of pearls. She carried a i-ascade bouquet of yellow rosebuds and ivy. Miss Nancy Simcox, sister of the bride, was maid of hon or. Bridesmaids were Miss Roberta Willett and Miss Ann Hammer, Myrtle Point, sorori ty sisters of the bride. They wore frocks of yellow crystal ine, fashioned with bell skirts and elbow length sleeves. Small tiaras held their brides maid's veils, and their bou quets were of yellow carna tions and greenery. Miss Sammie Dean, niece of the bridegroom from Nam pa, Idaho, was flower girl. Russel Pursel, nephew of the bride, was ring bearer. Serving as best man was Calvin Dean, twin brother of the bridegroom. Jay Dean, Nampa, Idaho, Carlyle Dean, Kent, Wash., and Mickey Dean, Corvallis, all brothers of the bridegroom, and W. S. Russell, uncle of the bride, seated the guests. Frank Albert and William Cunningham, Caldwell, Idaho, were groomsmen. Mr. and Mrs. Simcox gave the reception in the garden Miss Peterson Honored Guest; Wedding Friday Miss Sonja Peterson, daugh ter of Mr. and Mrs. Emil Pet erson, 2574 Jacksonville high way, was honored at a bridal shower given recently at the home of Mrs. Albert Gandt, 1248 Eureka circle. Co-hostesses were Mrs. He! mer Tinscth, Mrs. Keith Hockersmith, and Mrs. John Clark. Following the shower Miss Peterson played several piano numbers composed by i ner nance, jai'K Augustus tended the party. Miss Peterson and Mr. Behrens plan to be married Friday, August 31, in First Methodist church here. Married O'Brien Mr. and Mrs. Philip Grau, who were mar ried August 11, are making their home in O'Brien. Mrs. Grau is the former Miss Jo anne So of Norwalk,. Calif. Mr. Grau, formerly of Long Beach, Calif., is inspector at the Redwood station. of their home. Mrs. Simcox chose a frock of apricot color with matching accessories for the ceremony and reception Mrs. Dean's ensemble included a light blue jacket dress with white accessories. Both wore white carnation corsages. Mrs. W. H. Russell acted as hostess for the reception. Mrs. Myrna Shaw, Ashland, sister of the bridegroom, served the cake, and Miss Mary Kay Har ris poured punch. Miss Martha Sanborn, sorority sister of the bride, was in charge of the guest book, and Mrs. W. S. Dreveskracht, Redwood City, Calif., was at the gift table. The newlywed couple trav eled up the Oregon coast to Seattle, Wash., for their wed ding trip. The bride chose a brown and gold seersucker suit with black accessories and a corsage of yellow rose buds. They will be at home at 1687 Columbia street, Eugene. The bride was graduated from Medford High school in 1061, and is a student at the University of Oregon. She is a member of Gamma Phi Beta social sorority. .... , The bridegroom is also a Medford High graduate. He will return to classes at the University of Oregon in the fall. Among out of town guests were Mr. and Mrs. W. W. Meenack, Seattle, Wash.; W. H. Dreveskracht, Redwood City, Calif.; Mr. and Mrs. Ken neth Keenfe, Eugene; Donald Peek, Eugene; Robert Scott, Roseberg; Miss Patricia Sher lock, Portland; Miss Karen Wishart, Roseberg; and Mr. and Mrs. R. Main Medford Ph. 772-8992 : 1 Jr Returning recently to Med ford after a stay abroad was Mrs. Dorothy M. Dowson. 47 South Berkeley way. Mrs. Dowson traveled to Europe with Mrs. George Stacey, who returned home earlier. The two women went first to London and later visited other cities of the British Isles, including Coventry where they saw the recently completed new cathedral which is attracting world-wide attention because of its design and construction. They al..o visited Scotland and later went to Sweden and Norway. Mrs. Dowson was especially impressed with Copenhagen. They then flew to Paris where they met Mrs. Stacey's daughter, Pamela, who had been attending school in Paris for the past year. In Paris they attended the opera. The three women returned to New York City on the Mauretania and while there saw a production of "The Sound of Music and the new musical adaptation of "Around the World in Eighty Days." Before returning to Mod ford, Mrs. Dowson spent some time with her son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Van Bebber and son Bruce, Kansas City. Her son, Stan ley Dowson, was recently home after having been on a summer cruise under the Navy's NROTC program. He is attending Stanford univer sity on a NROTC scholarship. Jazz Concert Set Today Ashland Concertized mod ern jazz with interpretive comment by Sam Cady will be a Sunday afternoon at traction today at the Bard's Brook Coffee house and Art Gallery, 31 Water street. Between the hours of 3 and 5 p.m. musicians will be fea tured in a program of varied selections and theme. A trio, composed of Mr. Cady, piano; William Hannaford, bass; and Don Weaver, drums, will per form. A quartet of Mr. Cady, Mr. Weaver, Mr. Hannaford on the slide trombone, and Walt er Ayres, bass, will also play. Mr. Weaver, Mr. Hannaford, and Mr. Ayres .are Medford musicians. Mr. Cady will serve as mas ter of ceremonies. Some of the jazz numbers are of his ar rangement, and some he com posed. A nominal charge will be made for the . concert, and espresso coffee will be served. The Shakespearean art ex hibit is still on display, as well as handcrafts of the Senior Citizens club. Mr. and Mrs. Robert Onstad have charge of the gallery and workshop. Former Pastor Visits In Valley The Rev. and Mrs. Ernest Volkman and sons, John and Bill, were honored Thursday evening with a covered dish dinner at the home of Mr. and Mrs. John Kesler, 5054 South Pacific highway.- Mr. Volkman is a former pastor of the Phoenix Presbyterian church. The Volkmans have been guests of Mr. and Mrs. F. W. Pramann, 346 Scenic drive in Ashland while attending the Shakespearean festival. Mr. Volkman is presently byterian church in Calistoga, Calif. Mrs. Holmes and her husband now divide their time between homes in Corona del Mar, Calif., and Medford and do not attend many social events here: Dr. and Mrs. Bartels re cently returned here to make their home after living in southern California for a year. Mrs. Blackstone. also a league mem ber, and Mrs. Bartels both modeled during the show which was staged by Jean Hart and Curtis Stewart Fine Furs at a league benefit. (Knackstedt photo) Shakespearean Actor To Present New Show The fifth one-man show of Philip Hanson, well - known Shakespearean actor, will be presented for the first time Wednesday, August '.O, in the parish house of Trinity Epis copal church, Ashland. The show, called "Villains and Fools," is to be presented by the Trinity Noon series, un der the sponsorship of the In stitute of Rennaissance studies. The show reamres scenes from the plays of William Shakespeare. During the hour Mr. Hanson will portray some 20 different characters, using no makup or costume changes. As usual, his only stage prop erty will be a chair. At this time Mr. Hanson is with the San Diego Shake speare festival. He has in the past acted with the Ashland festival. Other one-man shows pre sented have been "Moby Dick," "My Name is Aram," "The Rebels," and "Kings and Clowns." The series began in 1959. He is a son of Mr. and Mrs. Harland Renfro. The wedding has been set for October 6. An engagement party held at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Renfro, Holland Loop road, was attended by 20 guests. Miss Cox attended Illinois Valley High school. Mr. Ren fro was graduated from the same school, completed his Army service and is em ployed by the Donald Beard Logging company of Illinois valley. Return Mrs. Floyd Hart Jr., 25 North Berkeley way, accom panied by the Harts' daugh ters, Pamela and Andrea, ar rived home last week after being in Seattle, Wash., for a week visiting with Mrs. Hart's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Agnar Larscn. to Robert Stickley Schmidt, son of Mr. and Mrs. Clarence R. Schmidt, 250 Janney lane. Both are graduates of Med ford High school and Miss Kubalek is a senior at the University of Oregon, major ing in English. Mr. Schmidt, who was graduated from the University of Idaho in June, has been employed as a forest er with the Bureau of Land Management in Ukiah, Calif. On August 20 he reported to the Naval Officer Candidate school at Newport, R.I. A Christmas wedding is planned. Ulrichs Leave After Stay Here Mr. and Mrs. Russell Ulrlch and daughters, the Misses Susan and Catherine Ulrich have left Medford for their home at Huntington, Long Is- land, N.Y., after a stay in Medford with Mr. Ulrlch's mother, Mrs. Lewis Ulrich, 839 Minnesota avenue, From here the family went to Seattle to spend some time with Mrs. Ulrich's family and to attend the World's Fair. They planned to fly from the Washington city to London and Berlin by the polar route, and will return to New York after a short stay In Europe. Mr. Ulrich is superintend ent of the meteorology for the Pan-American Airways company. Corvallis Family Visitors Here Dr. and Mrs. James Welly and children Mark, Steve, Dana and Jimmy, from Cor vallis were recent houseguesls at the home of Mrs. Wayne Welty and Vance Welty of 2940 Hillcrest avenue, mother and brother of Dr. Welty. The family also was entertained at dinner by the Donald Harp ers and William Whites. Mrs. Harper and Mrs. White are sisters of Mrs. James Welty. After a visit early this week with Mr. and Mrs. Lu ther Stone, Mrs. Welty's moth er, in Redding, Calif., they visited again briefly in Med ford before returning to Cor vallis where Dr. Welty Is an associate professor in me chanical engineering at Ore gon Stale university. ff. .In i V Sharyn Elaine Urie (Landis photo' Uries Announce Betrothal News Dr. and Mrs. Robert J.
