OREGON Marilyn Monroe Emotionally Spent During Past Year Editor'i Not: Thil it last of three articles by UPI Hollywood correspondent Vernon Scott on the life and death of Marilyn Monroe, whom he interviewed many limes during her 12 yean of stardom. BY VERNON 8COTT Hollywood-JUPH-In the last year and a half of her life Marilyn Monroe was a movie star without a movie, over weight, discouraged by three divorces and emotionally spent. Her career had crested and the future appeared to be all downhill. Following her Mexican di vorce from Arthur Miller in January 1961, she entered a New York clinic for mental illnesses. Her stay there was brief, but long enough to cancel her plans to star in a live television version of "Rain," which she had agreed to do. For almost a year Marilyn became a recluse, rarely al lowing visitors to her New York apartment. She had gained weight which shroud ed her once-famous curves. As she had since childhood, sex goddess Monroe sought tics, someone to grasp and hold onto. Surprisingly, that person was Joe DiMaggio, her quiet, steady, second husband. Hurriors of Romance They met in Florida and dated in New York City, and rumor sprang up that Marilyn would remarry Joe and find tlie long sought refuge from ' the battering life had given her. "We're just friends," Mari lyn said at the time. The great Yankee slusger of yesteryear remained silent. Gut his strength helped Marilyn. She drew on it She forced herself to diet and, en couraged, the tired glamour fh prove herself an actress Still under contract to 20th Century-Fox, with which she had been fighting for eight years, Marilyn returned to Hollywood last spring to star with Dean Martin in "Some thing's Got to Give." She wanted Rock Hudson for the costar role, but she was told he could not break another contract. Rebclliously she complain ed that she was the star of the picture but making less money than Martin. Her old contract called for $100,000 per picture. Monroe fan mail had dwin dled to a trickle from a high of 5,000 letters a week. But Marilyn assumed a kind of gaiety despite the fury of studio executives who had de layed the picture at great cost because she was late in re porting for work. Back at Studio She had regained her figure and her scenes were better than she had ever done before. Talk was optimistic. Then shooting was suspend ed when Marilyn flew to New York to serenade President Kennedy at his birthday rally in Madison Square Garden. Studio executives were beside themselves with rage, power less to punish their star Marilyn worked a few more days upon her return, then failed to appear again, send ing notice that she was suffer ing from a virus. I talked to her by telephone during the final few days of her employment. 1 m really sick, she said. "I have a temperature over 100 degrees and my throat is terribly sore. I wan to get back to work and I hope the studio understands." The studio did not under stand. It had been through similar delaying tactics with Marilyn in the past. So far $2 picture and it was less than a fourth completed. On June 8 the studio fired its biggest star and sued her for $500,000. It replaced her with actress Lee Remick only to be shocked at Martin's announcement that he would not appear in the picture without Monroe. No Work. No Love The beautiful girl-woman had nothing left now. She couldn't work under the terms of her studio contract al though there were scores of otfers. Nor could she lose her self in another romantic en tanglement. The heartbreak of her marriages to Miller and DiMaggio had wrung her al most dry of emotion. What, then, was there left for the most glittering glam our girl in memory? In a recent magazine story she said, "... I was brought up differently from the aver age American child because the average child is brought up expecting to be happy." She had only a tiny piece of life, and for those of us who knew and admired Marilyn Monroe there remains soul searing remorse that none was able to provide her with the knowledge that she was in deed loved and cherished. New Idaho Solon Opposed Power Bill Washington -!UPU- Sen. Lcn B. Jordan (R-Idaho) voted un successfully Wednesday to kill a bill to give the Pacific Northwest first call on power produced at federal power plants in the region. The bill was passed by the Senate by a vote of 51-36. Jordan, named by Idaho Gov. Robert E. Smylie to fill a seat vacated by the death of Sen. Henry C. Dworshak, voted both to kill the bill and for the earlier motion to re commit it for further commit tee consideration. It was Jordan's first roll call vote since being sworn in. Sen. Frank Church (D-Ida-ho) voted for the bill, as did most Democratic senators. Sen. Thomas H. Kuchel (R Calif.) also voted for the bill. Sens. Barry Goldwater (R Ariz.) and Wallace F. Ben nett (R-Utah) did not vote. Sen. Gordon Allott (R-Colo.) voted against it. The vote generally followed party lines, with Democrats favoring the bill and Republi cans opopsed. "It was a very pleasant flight although we flew on instruments for a short pe riod,'' said Mrs. Marion Hart, New York City, who piloted the Bonanza plane. Mrs. Hart, who made a sim ilar flight in 1053, flew today with Miss Louise Sacchi, 49, Jenkintown, Pa. DiMaggio Weeps Throughout Rites For Marilyn Monroe West Los Angelcs-WMl-Joe DiMaggio's emotional break down at Marilyn Monroe's funeral provided the final bit of drama in the tragic life slory of the blonde sex goddess. The former New York Yan kee slugger wept throughout the rites Wednesday and 3t the conclusion murmured, "I love you. I love you." and kissed his ex-wife's lips in farewell. DiMaggio's grief climaxed the 23-minute non-denominational service at Westwood Village Memorial Cemetery Chapel where only 33 mourn ers heard the colorful actress eulogized as "the eternal feminine" by her friend and dramatic coach. Lee Stras berg. A crowd of 300 surrounded the small cemetery. . . More than 80 police offi cers maintained order in the 93-degree heat which pro duced a sprinkling of parosols by women, most of whom wore bright colored dresses. Some of the curious climbed atop a wall. After entombment, when the officers departed, the crowd grew unruly and dashed across the cemetery to snatch flowers from the crypt. ...... Services were conducted by the Rev. A. J. Soldan who based his comments on the Biblical quotation, "How fearfully and wonderfully she was made by the Creator." DiMaggio, on the arm of Joe Jr., who was in dress blue Marine uniform, composed himself after leaving the chapel to walk behind the hearse that bore Miss Mon roe's body to the S800 crypt overlooking bustling Wilshire blvd.
