He's recovered from his mental illness. e Gregory F. - A group of us old neighborhood friends are planning to charter a yacht for an inland waterway cruisa to Florida. If we split tha cost among six couples, wa can swing it. In asking around for a show of interest wa find that the Steve Browns want to sign up. This gives us pause, well me anyway, because Steve has Just recent ly been discharged from ths hospital after a mental break down. We can get out of Including him without hurting his feel ings by telling him we're al ready filled up. This isn t a lie because we have more bids than we need. I'm afraid of mental conditions. Maybe it's because I don't under stand them. But I'm opposed to inviting Steve because, well, you never can tell . , . Thomas V. - I'm all for signing up the Browns. What difference does it make what he was in the hospital for? He's been cured. He's "all better." He's back at his shop. Why should Greg, or any of us for that matter, set our selves up as doctors and de cide he s still sick? It s nervy, mean and ridiculous. Greet wouldn't have any reserva tions if Steve had been hos pitalized for pneumonia or? hepatitis. Yet there might ba some real danger there. My kid brother caught hepatitis from rooming with a student ' who had It. Out of all the possible shipmates we can choose from, the Browns are the most Interesting. He runs a swlm-and-skl shop, they've been all over the world and they're a devoted pair. Tha Councllt Unless one keeps up with the giant steps being taken today In the men tal health field, one sounds like Rip Van Winkle when opening one s mouth on the subject. Gregory gives him self away as a real Ripl He must have been ignoring the reports in the newspapers and on radio and TV to the effect that (according to a pains taking study of a large seg ment of people) eight out of every ten of us need, or can use, some psychiatric help! Even the remaining two may not sit back smugly and point their fingers, Greg. They are not pronounced metally well, but merely "symptom-free"- a temporary term. Other studies go even fur ther. They would claim that Steve Brown, who's been diagnosed and treated for a mental illness, is far less of a risk as a companion than others who may not know how close to the breaking point they are. No. Old words like "crazy and "insane asylum" are ob solete and meaningless. Men tal Illness now is marked merely by the Inability of an Individual to "cope. Mora and more he is being treated like any other sick person -in office visits. In outpatient clinics and. when hospitaliza tion is necessary, In a general hospital. The long-range goat is for shrinkage in the size of mental hospitals, reserving! them for the very small per centage of hard-core, irrevers ible cases. For most people who apply for and receive treatment, recovery Is attain able within a reasonable time. And a full return to normal living is possible If there is full acceptance and under standing by the people who count in the patient's life - his family, his business as sociates, his friends. Gregory's blind -spot Indi cates how far we, the general public, must still go in per forming our end of the re habilitation Job. For it's a bridge. Steve and the doctors have constructed their end, but they won't quite make it to the other side unless those on the shore throw out a hand ana make the rescuing leap. tviacnuy most of those Into whose midst Steve has re turned have done their part, for he Is now well.
