B Naumes, Young Gain Net Togas Mike Naumes and Shareen Young last ween won the championships in the tourna. ment which concluded the city park and recreation depart' ment's summer tennis instruc tion program for boys and girls. In the boys' finale Mike Naumes defeated Scott Car penter, 6-3, 9-11, 6-4. Tennis instructor and supervisor Bob Huff termed this terrific match the outstanding one of the summer program. Miss Young trimmed Laura Batzer, 6-2, 6-2, in the girls' titular match. The park and recreation de partment will wrap up sum mer tennis activity with community tournament on Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 11 and 12. Huff reported a good entry so far and said that there is much interest in mixed dou bles competition. Contenion is planned, loo, in men's junior men's and women's singles and men's doubles. Men's and mixed doubles have $3 entry fee. Men's singles fee is $2 and junior men's and worn en's $1 each. Entries close on Friday, Aug. 10. They may be made by telephoning Huff, the tour ney chairman, at 772-9445 or by contacting the city recrea tion office. Fees are due at the time of the first match. Junior men's singles first round will open the tourney at 7 a.m. Saturday with wom en's singles opening round to follow. Players are to report Saturday morning to the scor er's table at the Medford Sen ior high courts. Naumes advanced through the boys' tourney with vic tories of 7-5, 6-1 over A. T. Highland and 6-3, 6-3 over Chris Rasmussen. Carpenter beat Lee Limbcrlcy, 6-4, 6-4, and Gary Highland, 8-6, 6-3, on his way to the finals. Miss Young defeated San dra Irving 6-UO, 6-1 and Diane Paulsen, 8-6, 6-3. Miss Batzer advanced against Mary Walsh, 6-3, 7-5, and Kathy Smith, 61, 6-1. Spahn, who had only an 81 1 record on July 13, gain ed his 11th victory of the season when he pitched the Milwaukee Braves to an 8-1 win over the Philadelphia Phillies Sunday while Rob erts, winless until June 11, chalked up his seventh tri umph for the Baltimore Ori oles, 7-2, over the Los Angles Angels. The victory was the 320lh of Spahn's career and gives him an outside chance to achieve his 13th 20-win sea son. Roberts' win was the 241st of a career that seemed ended when the New York Yankees released him in June. Spahn yielded six hits and walked one batter in squar ing his season record at 11-11. He was backed by a 10-hit attack which included two homers by Joe Adcock that drove in five runs. White City - It wai a wild night (or soft ball here Saturday but the Rogue Valley Dairy Maids sur vived. They nosed the plucky Roseburg Lumberjills 11 to 10. Becky Glines struck a sud den death blow in the bottom of the seventh inning. Her triple drove home Janet Pfaff with the game - ending run. Pfaff had singled. The Glines' blast was over the head of the centerfielder and was good enough for a homer had the run been needed. Eagle Point defeated Phoenix-Talent 10 to 4 in a pre liminary game. The Rogue Valley team took a two-run hop on Rose burg in the opening panel. Roseburg scored once in the second frame and went ahead 3 to 2 with two fifth-inning counters. In the bottom of the fifth, however, the Maids ap peared to put the game in the bag with six markers for 8 to 3. R.taliai. A single by Judy Ziegler in the sixth canto was followed by a mighty three-baser by Jo anne Davenport. A flock of eight passed balls, five wild pitches, 12 bases on balls and three-hit batters were factors in Roseburg runs. A first-inning home run by Ellen Callaghan and her dou ble, the triple and single by Glines and three singles by Pfaff highlighted an 11-hit attack by the Dairy Maids. Doris Hickson had two hits. Pat Barron, pitching the first five innings for the Dairy Maids, struck out batters eight times. Callaghan, finishing on the slab, whiffed three and allowed the two hits.
