SECTION D PAGES 1 to 8 1 WEDFORDv j-Tribune SUNDAY, JULY IS. 1962 All-Day Service Now Available at Humane Society Twenty-four-hour-a-day ser vice is now available al the Southern Oregon Humane so ciety, where six small doors have been installed for animal deposit. The doors, located at the so ciety at 2902 Table Rock rd., open into cages, from which animals are removed periodi cally by the attendant in charge. Each door is labeled. Four are for small dogs and cats, while the other two are for large dogs. The doors open from the outside at any time of day. After the animal has entered, they automatically; are locked inside. The project was financed through a special fund of do nations, according to Bill Her ring, humane officer. He ad ded that the Medford society Is the only one in Oregon hav ing such a service. Checks Cages After being gone from the society, Herring checks the deposit cages on his return. He then transfers any animals found to regular quarters in 41-ia cnniot v Herring said the purpose ot the setup is to encourage resi dents to give unwanted ani mals to the humane society. "Many people," he said "are reluctant to face the hu mane officer, and so dump their animal in the woods somewhere, believing it will learn to fend for itself." Tame pets usually are killed by oth er animals or starve, he said. Installation of the deposit system will enable people to leave pets without having to face the officer. In this way, It is possible for the society to find a suitable home for the animal. It is hoped by the humane society that people will use the service. "We have had quile good response so far," Herring said, emphasizing the availability of the service. Storm Leaves Hail In National Park Wednesday afternoon's thun derstorm activity in southern Oregon brought rain, light ning and hail to areas in Cra ter Lake National park. Francis J a c o I, assistant chief ranger, reported consid erable hail between 1 and 3 p. m. Wednesday, especially in the higher elevations on the south side of the lake. There also were several light ning strikes, causing at least one small fire. The hail fall was so heavy in some spots, the ranger noted, that it whit ened the ground like snow. There were reports of some snow flurries throughout the park, but it did not stay. One park spokesman reported a few white patches from about two miles inside the west boundary of the lake to the Diamond Lake junction. No new snow was reported near park headquarters. Park rangers reported that considerable snow remains on the north side of the lake from winter storms. The drifts now are a maximum of 10 feet in depth. It was pointed ou that it is "rather unusual" to have much fresh snow this time of the year. However, park records show that snow has fallen at the lake during all 12 months of the yar, rangers added. Medford Youth Hurt In Valley Accident Jerry Michael Bogart, 1!), of 1310 Sweet rd., Medford, was treated at Rogue Valley hospital for a cut on his right hand last week following an automobile accident on Dark Hollow rd. According to stale police. Bogart was northbound on Dark Hollow rd. when his car skidded in loose gravel. He was taken to the hospilal for treatment by state police. In another accident, a car and two-wheel trailer were ex tensively damaged at the In tersection of Ross lane and Saae rd. According to stale police a car operated by Gary Lane Gustafson, 27, of 1605 Ross lane, was attempting to make a left turn from Sage rd. onto Ross lane at the same time Jeep operated by Byron O Neil Bcaslcy Jr.. 20. of 3487 New Ray rd., Central Point, attempted to turn left from Ross lane onto Sage rd.
