Roseburg's Legion Nine Tips Studs; CP To Oppose Medford Memorial Field, White City Roseburg Lockwood Ford Motors took full advantage of a last-inning opportunity here last night to record its third victory of the season in American Legion junior base ball over the Central Point Cheney Studs. The defending state cham pions accumulated all their markers in the top of the sev enth canto to nose the Studs 3 to 2. Two walks, two errors and Jim Beamer's double figured in the tallies. With the runs Roseburg snuffed out a lead the Cheney nine had held since CP lead off batter Mike Glines crossed the platter In the opening frame. Central Point used both miscues charged to Lockwood to gain its runs. Roseburg pitcher Tom Hobbs allowed the Studs but two hits. He struck out batters 15 times. The Cheney club will op pose Medford at this Veterans Administration ' domiciliary diamond on Friday. Game time will be 7:30 p.m. It will be the sixth game of the sea son for the Studs and the sec ond for the Medford Cokes. Glines Scores Twic Glines scored both Central Point runs. He got on base in the first inning when he socked a ground ball and shortstop Marv French's throw to first was high. Pat Pepper's sacrifice and a passed ball got Glines to third. He reached home on Lou Alvarez's fielder's choice grounder. Jeff Anhorn fol lowed up the tally with a single but a flyout and a groundout ended the inning. In the fifth inning the Studs made it 2 to 0 when Glines three-baggered and tabulated on catcher Beamer's throwing miscue on a pick off try. Larry Mason, pitching for Central Point, allowed five hits to Roseburg over the first four innings. He kept the 'VI is Ot. He issued a walk to the first batter he faced and followed a flyout '!l''w", spn . in. IN LEGION LINEUP - Don Anderson, above, is slated to be at first base for the Med ford American Legion junior baseball team when it plays Central Point at 7:30 p.m. Fri day, at Memorial field, White City. Anderson lashed two doubles when the teams met last week. with a strikeout. Then, two walks filled the sacks. Coach Bill Askwith called time out to talk things over but left the pitcher in. Mason got Hobbs to watch a third strike go by. Beamer Blasts Phil Thurman also was out on a called third strike to start the last inning. Gordon Avery drew a free pass and both runners were safe when shortstop Lou Alvarez fum bled after taking a bounder from Doug Coplin. Dennis Arana walked to fill the bases. The count went full to three and two on Beamer but he blasted the next pitch far out into right field for his double. This brought in Avery and Coplin with the tying runs. The ball got by catcher Anhorn on the throw in and Arana crossed the plate. Mike Pepper came in re lief to fan Fortune and get French to line out. Hobbs struck out the side in the bot tom of the seventh to give Roseburg the verdict. The Roseburg pitcher walked only two batters. Ma son, in a sixth hitter over 6 13 innings, fanned three, walked six and hit one bat ter, yielding only two of the free passes before the sixth inning. Beamer, with a single and two-baser, was the only player with more than one hit. Cen tral Point had one double play when Glines, the third baseman, fielded a ground ball, tagged a runner and threw to first to stop a Rose burg bid. Twedell Throw Good The Studs snuffed a Rose burg try in the second canto when Beamer singled and went to second on Fortune's sacrafice. Beamer attempted to score on Bob Manning's hit but leftfielder Dave Twe dell's throw reached catcher Anhorn in plenty of time for a putout. Coach Askwith reported that either Mike or Larry Pepper may get the pitching call against Medford on trl day. Stuart Young, who chucked a two-hitter against the Studs in a losing cause last Friday, is Medford Coach Cliff Mc Lean's choice to pitch against Central Point tomorrow eve ning. McLean reported that he has done considerable work with the Medford pitchers during the past week. Medford first baseman Don Anderson and outfielder Wayne Couch will be missing for a period after Friday's games. Anderson will attend the two-weeks session of the Junior Engineering and Sci ence Summer institute at Cor vallis, then will be on a fam ily vacation. Couch will be on a vacation trip. MEDFORD MAIL TRIBUNE. MEDFORD, OREGON PITA STATE SHOOT BEGINS ON FRIDAY Scatterguns start blasting Friday morning in this state's biggest trapshoot event of the year. It's the Oregon State ihoot of the Pacific International Trapshoot ing association. Scene will be the Medford Gun club on East Vilas rd. west of the Crater Lake high way Four Corners. The Oregon Class cham pionship will lead off the tour ney at 9 a.m. tomorrow. This 100-targct, 16-yard event will initiate three days of titular shooting at local layout. It will serve also at the first half of the state singles champion ship. At approximately 1:30 p.m. Friday the 100-target Medford handicap will follow. Twenty five pairs of doubles will con clude the day. Other Events ' Last half of the 200-yard singles rivalry will be con tested Saturday morning with the Jim Morris Memorial handicap and state doubles championship billed for after noon. Oregon state handicap championship Will be settled Sunday. The foregoing program will give each of those who take part in the complete tourney a chance to blaze at 650 clay pigeons. Anticipated entry in the 1k J " Y If1 ?Tk a- ' j A, SHOEHORN TO CONTEND Featured en try in the gns division of competition at this week end's Spring Championship drag races at the Medford Drag strip will be the 'Shoe horn' dragster from Reno, Nev. This super charged rear-engined speedster holds, records here and at several California and Nevada SOTA Drag Races 'Mr. Eliminator' To Be Determined A special feature of this week end's Spring Champion ship drag races at the Med ford drag strip at White City will be 'match' races between the meet's two fastest gas powered cars. Three of these match races will be staged with a special honor going to the winner of the series. Driver and car that come out top in this contention will assume the SOTA Mr. Eliminator No. 1 spot. Holder of the No. 1 position must ac cept a challenge for his honor within at least 60 days after winning the spot. Fast Cars Southern Oregon Timing as sociation officials have estab lished the rules for the spe cial competition among the regions fastest cars. Each time a set match races is run the winner will be awarded $100 and sponsored back to the SOTA drag strip to defend his title. Keen Interest shown in the special races by the contest ants indicates they may be come highly popular Detore the conclusion of the summer racing season. Top Contenders To contenders for this week end's feature attraction are the Skeans-Pickering dragster from Vancouver, Wash., and the Welsh-Butler "Shoehorn" acceleration machine from Reno. Nev. Both cars have been outstanding performers on the Medford drag strip in past years and both have been rebuilt during the last winter with nromise of even faster speeds. The Sheans machine is a national chBtnpion and the Reno enlry holds records at many of the larger California drag strips. Both are expected to record speeds of near or over 160 miles per hour on the local one-fourth mile speed track. Officials expect some 300 entries during the two days of action. Competition will be SIGN SCHOOL STAR Washington - (UPD - Rn Clod felter, who batted .440 for Mooresville, N.C., High school this year, has been signed by the Washington Senators. He will report Immediately to the Senators' Middlcsboro, Ky., farm rlnh in the Class D Ap palachian league. tournament is 400 shooters. Many of them were on hand this afternoon for registration and practice shooting. Sev eral western states and pos sibly British Columbia will be represented. This is the Medford Gun club's first state tourney since 1958. Class Winners Titles may not be defended in all portions of the to'urney but a good number ot last year's winners are expected to be on hand. Here are the shooters who won 16 -yard class honors in 1961: AA - Ado Elliott, Portland; A - T. M. Bennett, Wallowa; B - Joe Coburn, Sprague Riv er; C - J. B. Conway, Port land; D - Ross Langlitz, Port land; out-of-state-George Wil liams, Vancouver. B.C. Bennett and Williams each broke perfect 100s. Trapshooting Is largely a participant sport but Medford Gun club members pointed out that spectators are encour aged and welcome to watch the shooting. It is expected that some 100,000 clay targets will be thrown by 10 traps at the club this week end. The state shoot offers $1,700 in perpetual purses, $1,800 worth of trophies and $5,000 in added money. held In both the gas and fuel divisions. Both will gun to exceed the present strip fuel record of 176.10 miles per hour, Stock cars entered in the meet on Saturday will be able to compete in special races at 4 p.m. that day with trophies going to the winners. The powderpuff division of competition will be run off Sunday afternoon following stock-car eliminations. Action gets under way at 10 a.m. Saturday and 7 a.m. Sunday. Deadline for all stock car entries is 9 a.m. Sunday and the deadline for all other entries is noon on Sunday. The Medford drag strip is located seven miles north of Medford off the Crater Lake highway in west White City. NCAA ENTRY Eugene -(UPD- Homer Jones, Texas Southern sprinter who won the 220 over Bob Hayes of Florida A&M last week in the NAIA finals, will compete in next week's NCAA track and field meet here. Meet of ficials also said Bob Boyd of Oregon State had qualified for the steeplechase. He is Or egon' State's 12th qualifier. NAMED FOR ATHLETE Jim Thorpe, Pa. -IUPD-Jim Thorpe, the county seat of Carbon county, Pa.; originally was two towns-Mauch Chunk and East Mauch Chunk, from the Indian Machk Tschunk, meaning "bear mountain." The two communities consoli dated in 1PS4 and assumed the name of the immortal Indian athlete. Thorpe's grave here is marked by a 20-ton mauso leum.
