To Oppose Medford
Memorial Field, White City
Roseburg Lockwood Ford
Motors took full advantage
of a last-inning opportunity
here last night to record its
third victory of the season in
American Legion junior base
ball over the Central Point
Cheney Studs.
The defending state cham
pions accumulated all their
markers in the top of the sev
enth canto to nose the Studs
3 to 2. Two walks, two errors
and Jim Beamer's double
figured in the tallies. With
the runs Roseburg snuffed
out a lead the Cheney nine
had held since CP lead off
batter Mike Glines crossed
the platter In the opening
frame.
Central Point used both
miscues charged to Lockwood
to gain its runs. Roseburg
pitcher Tom Hobbs allowed
the Studs but two hits. He
struck out batters 15 times.
The Cheney club will op
pose Medford at this Veterans
Administration ' domiciliary
diamond on Friday. Game
time will be 7:30 p.m. It will
be the sixth game of the sea
son for the Studs and the sec
ond for the Medford Cokes.
Glines Scores Twic
Glines scored both Central
Point runs. He got on base in
the first inning when he
socked a ground ball and
shortstop Marv French's
throw to first was high. Pat
Pepper's sacrifice and a
passed ball got Glines to
third. He reached home on
Lou Alvarez's fielder's choice
grounder. Jeff Anhorn fol
lowed up the tally with a
single but a flyout and a
groundout ended the inning.
In the fifth inning the Studs
made it 2 to 0 when Glines
three-baggered and tabulated
on catcher Beamer's throwing
miscue on a pick off try.
Larry Mason, pitching for
Central Point, allowed five
hits to Roseburg over the first
four innings. He kept the

baseball team when it plays

City. Anderson lashed two
doubles when the teams met
last week.
with a strikeout. Then, two
walks filled the sacks. Coach
Bill Askwith called time out
to talk things over but left
the pitcher in. Mason got
Hobbs to watch a third strike
go by.
Beamer Blasts
Phil Thurman also was out
on a called third strike to
start the last inning. Gordon
Avery drew a free pass and
both runners were safe when
shortstop Lou Alvarez fum
bled after taking a bounder
from Doug Coplin. Dennis
Arana walked to fill the
bases.
The count went full to
three and two on Beamer but
he blasted the next pitch far
out into right field for his
double. This brought in
Avery and Coplin with the
tying runs. The ball got by
catcher Anhorn on the throw
in and Arana crossed the
plate.
Mike Pepper came in re
lief to fan Fortune and get
French to line out. Hobbs
struck out the side in the bot
tom of the seventh to give
Roseburg the verdict.
The Roseburg pitcher
walked only two batters. Ma
son, in a sixth hitter over
6 13 innings, fanned three,
walked six and hit one bat
ter, yielding only two of the
free passes before the sixth
inning.
Beamer, with a single and
two-baser, was the only player
with more than one hit. Cen
tral Point had one double
play when Glines, the third
baseman, fielded a ground
ball, tagged a runner and
threw to first to stop a Rose
burg bid.
Twedell Throw Good
The Studs snuffed a Rose
burg try in the second canto
when Beamer singled and
went to second on Fortune's
sacrafice. Beamer attempted
to score on Bob Manning's
hit but leftfielder Dave Twe
dell's throw reached catcher
Anhorn in plenty of time for
a putout.
Coach Askwith reported
that either Mike or Larry
Pepper may get the pitching
call against Medford on trl
day. Stuart Young, who chucked
a two-hitter against the Studs
in a losing cause last Friday,
is Medford Coach Cliff Mc
Lean's choice to pitch against
Central Point tomorrow eve
ning. McLean reported that he
has done considerable work
with the Medford pitchers
during the past week.
Medford first baseman Don
Anderson and outfielder
Wayne Couch will be missing
for a period after Friday's
games. Anderson will attend
the two-weeks session of the
Junior Engineering and Sci
ence Summer institute at Cor
vallis, then will be on a fam
ily vacation. Couch will be on
a vacation trip. Either Scott
Eaton or Jim Calhoun will
likely take over at first base
with the other probably play
