THUHSDA t , JUNE 7. 1962 MEDFORD MAIL TRIBUNE. MEDFORD, OREGON Armadillo Is Moving North Into Oklahoma Ada, Okie. -OIPII-The arma ' dillo, thai bony, burrowing and bustling animal that be gan a northern migration many years ago, apparently has found Oklahoma to Us liking. ' Making it across the Red river, armadillos are saunter ing Into Oklahoma from Tcx- fl in Increasing numbers. They have been spotted as far north as northern Ponto toc county, about 75 miles from the border. Somp folks predict th arm adillo In a few years will be ' as common as the cottontail Others are a bit dubious figur- i ing the weather and avail ability of insects will deter mine whether the strange looking mammal settles In these parts. "He's coming on fast since the Red river was dammed said Jack McPhctridge, Ponto toc county trapper. "When I'm trapping, I see him and his tracks all over the south pari of the county. But hc' In the north as well as south sec tions, too." The armadillo, which re sembles a miniature tank on stilts, is a native of Argentina and obviously has been on the move northward for a long time. It has migrated in great numbers into Texas from Mexico and can be found scat tered about the Southwest. lis long, relatively en ormous body is encased in an armor of small bony plates. When it is scared, It can fold its shell like an accordion and roll into a ball. Devoid of the armor, it reportedly makes a good meal. South Americans consider him a delicacy. Two beady eyes peak from an odd triangular head and he has large ears, sharp claws and a long, bone-padded tail. He can move fart, but not for long, and despite the long claws, he's no fighter. The armadillo, whose bur rowing could put a mole to shame, does not fight for animal meat, but Is contented to eat roots and insects, which probably accounts for" the fact that he now Is practically toothless.
