OREGON On Jthe Air By ELEANOR WIESE SUNDAY, MAY 27, 1962 No TV show this week or ior weeks to come can match the excitement and suspense of the flight of Aurora 7 to its harrowing climax which radio and television networks fallowed for nearly 10 hours last Thursday. - - However, another dramatic story of the age-old conflict between man and a phenom enon of nature will be shown today at 9 p.m. on KMED-TV when the Du Pont Show tells the story of the devastating sweep of Hurricane Carla, one of the greatest storms of the ceniury. Carla was born as a small patch of squalls in the West ern Caribbean on the Labor Day week end of 1961. As It moved to the Northwest, it gathered strength. It was at full height of its fury when it struck the Gulf Coast of Texas at 150 miles an hour. Before it died as a local storm in Greenland, it had taken 43 lives and in the Texas coastal area alone had caused dam age of more than one-half bil . lion dollars. In addition to U. S. Wea ther Bureau aerial rcconnais ance films following Carla's progress, the main events of "Hurricane!" take place in Galveston, the city battered by the storm for three days. Evacuation and rescue oper ations are shown as water swept over the 17-foot sea , wall into the city's streets.
