MEDFORD MAIL TRIBUNE. MEDFORD. OREGON
On Jthe Air
By ELEANOR WIESE
SUNDAY, MAY 27, 1962
No TV show this week or
ior weeks to come can match
the excitement and suspense
of the flight of Aurora 7 to
its harrowing climax which
radio and television networks
fallowed for nearly 10 hours
last Thursday. - -
However, another dramatic
story of the age-old conflict
between man and a phenom
enon of nature will be shown
today at 9 p.m. on KMED-TV
when the Du Pont Show tells
the story of the devastating
sweep of Hurricane Carla, one
of the greatest storms of the
ceniury.
Carla was born as a small
patch of squalls in the West
ern Caribbean on the Labor
Day week end of 1961. As It
moved to the Northwest, it
gathered strength. It was at
full height of its fury when
it struck the Gulf Coast of
Texas at 150 miles an hour.
Before it died as a local storm
in Greenland, it had taken 43
lives and in the Texas coastal
area alone had caused dam
age of more than one-half bil
. lion dollars.
In addition to U. S. Wea
ther Bureau aerial rcconnais
ance films following Carla's
progress, the main events of
"Hurricane!" take place in
Galveston, the city battered
by the storm for three days.
Evacuation and rescue oper
ations are shown as water
swept over the 17-foot sea
, wall into the city's streets. To
make matters worse, three
tornadoes - by-products of
Carla - cut swaths of destruc.
tion through the city.
