Carbcrry family published in a near-by daily paper, stand ing kill orders on Carberry items were instituted in most Rhode Island news rooms. Red-faced editors, who- had let news items about Carberry and his exploits slip by their unsuspecting noses, soon learned that there was no such person. Consequently, anybody with the actual name of Carberry had not a ghost of a chance of getting their name in print. Professor Emeritus Ben jamin C. Clough. author of "American Imagination at Work" and curator of Car berriana at Brown, says that, surprisingly enough, there are some Brown men who have never heard of Carberry and a few who wish they never had. "The Carberry saga goes back 33 years," writes Dr. Clough, "when a young mem ber of the Brown faculty was idly looking over a university bulletin board. On a playful impulse, he wrote and posted an announcement of a lecture by Professor Josiah S. Carber ry of the Department of Cer amics. "The school had no such department and, needless to say, no Professor Carberry. In due time the notice was summarily torn down but not before a number of other faculty men gleefully spotted it. They took to signing Car berry's name to letters and telegrams, submitting research items in his name to learned journals, feeding items about his suppored academic disser tations to newspapers. Carber ry developed into a full-bodied legend. "The creation of Carberry stories and practical jokes caught on, spreading like - a contagious lunacy, among Brown alumni everywhere until even periodicals in such countries as Japan and Burma were being used to further the legend. "ft wasn't long before the mythical Carberry acquired an equally mythical wife, two daughters by the names of Lois and Patricia and a devo ted friend, called Truman Grayson. The latter suffers from a rare affliction, an un fortunate knack of being bit ten by creatures whose names begin with 'A'-anteaters, asps, aardvarks. In 1943 it was re ported that he had been bitten by the Army Air Force! "A jumbo postcard came from San Diego. 'I do not ad vise your sending Grayson down here,' it said. We are doing some work on the pig ment of aphids. However, it is his own responsibility if he wishes to come.' "To get back to Josiah Carberry, Ernest Dickinson, author of a recent article on the life and times of Professor Car berry, says 'Of all Josiah's accomplish ments, none is so widely known as his research in psycho - ceramics (psycho meaning roughly 'cracked'; ceramics, 'pots'). r "I wasn't immune to the Carberry jokes myself. A clip. : ping from the Middlctown Press of June 11, 1936. was sent me by a kind friend -or, rather, sent to my wife: 'Engagement announced.' Mr. and Mrs. J. S. Carberry of ; Bullwinkle Farm have an-1 nounced the engagement of their daughter, Lois' to .Dr. Ben C. Clough of North Provi-! dence, R. I.' (I know I got . back at my colleague for that 1 one, but I can't remember just ' what I did.) "You might think the young members of the fac ulty in 1929 had not enough to do. They had plenty to do; they worked hard. These were the recreations of the hard-working men. If we spent some time inventing I and collecting Carberriana, I it was not our main objec tive or occupation; it was ; perhaps our main avoca- lion, though. "The vogue , of Professor ! Carberry from time to time dies and is forgotten, only to come to life again suddenly for no known reason. So far it has done no great harm. (Like all superstitious persons, I here knock on wood.) It is an innocent myth, an innocent practical joke." . Insurance Benefits Are Big Community Resource Old-ace survivors and disa bility insurance benefits are becoming increasingly impor tant as a community resource, according to Edward B. Jacob son, district manager of the Medford office of the Social Security administration. As of the end of 1961, more than S10 million per year in benefits is paid to the more than 13.000 beneficiaries re siding in the area served by the Medford district office. This area includes Jackson and Josephine counties and the Glcndale area of Douglas county. In Jackson county 8,761 beneficiaries are receiving S573.899 monthly or a total of S6.886.788 per year. These benefits are intended primarily for the benefici aries' economic security, but they help business in the com munity generally, Jacobson noted. Most of the money is spent immediately for food, clothing and other necessities. Nationally, at the present time, social security benefits are being paid at the rate of more than SI billion a month to 17 million beneficiaries, Jacobson said. Among the reasons for the Increased number of benefi ciaries is that medical science is prolonging life and there are more aged people. Also. benefits are now payable to both men and women at age 62, disability benefits are pay able at any age. and less so cial security credit is needed to qualify for payments. In order to more efficiently administer the program and provide better service to the public, the Social Security administration has recently completed a telecommunica tions network linking the 600 social security district offices with their record keeping headquarters in Baltimore and with the seven payment centers throughout the coun try. The network, combined with the electronic data pro cessing equipment in Balti more, will result in a reduc tion of the paperwork involv ed in the claims and benefit operations, streamline routine clerical operations, and speed the payment of benefits, Jac obson added.
