Ial News I IL.ata Show I i 1 - Supsjrititions Surround Most RopuliiT Plant Its name is as object onable as its presence. It it low, evil and actually hideous. Naturally some weird and ugly superstitions iu -round it, this member of the fungi family of plants corrmonly known as the "stinkhorn." It is an unsavory membfr of strange group, coming about as close to being an gre as anything could be. I: is a plant wnicn grows in sur roundings actually eerie and spectral. Even the beliefs and super stitions built up about this "thing" that grows from an egg-like form in sour ground are ugly and repulsive, for they concern themselves with strange and uncanny meet ings between it and venom ous serpents during the dark ness of night. Many people believe that rattlesnakes gath er around this plant and hold some mysterious rites known only to the creatures of evil. This uncanny plant is about the strangest of any of the fungus plants. It Is downright weird. Unless you know dif ferently, you would think the plant grows from an egg. Egg Pops Up For up out of the around. in dark and unpleasant places. first appears a round, eee- shaped case, dirty white in color, and about the size of pullet's egg. If you touch it, it feels soft, like dead skin. By the time two thirds of the egg rises above the eround. the leathery skin breaks ODen and a grotesque series of twisted branches or fingers slowly unroll and spread out. Ihese fingers look like a crippled human hand. They are red in color, and the outer surface is pebbled with tiny bumps and small holes, look- ng something like enlarged pores in unhealthy animal skin. Should you be foolish enough to get close to this gnarled arrangement you would detect a putrid odor like decayed flesh. This, of course, Is the reason for the name "stinkhorn." It smells as bad as it looks. Arms Collapse Within a few short hours the arms begin to collapse, and at the same time a black, repulsive mucous material be gins forming on the lower sections of the plant. It is this substance that supersti tion associates with the at traction the plant presents to rattlesnakes. Scienti f i c a 1 1 y however, no evidence exists to prove that a snake would visit this ugly plant. By the end of 23 hours the eerie arms have shriveled and collapsed into a mass of rotting vegetation. The brief life of this strange plant has ended, but clustered around this dying one on the damp, mouldy ground in ugly bumps and hideous contortions, other "eggs" are opening and other soft, clammy serpentine arms are rearing themselves up into warm, damp air. The race of plant ogres we call "stinkhorns are pursu ing their evil ways, complet ing their weird and ghoulish existence. No wonder strange and eerie tales are told and believed about this repulsive character with the cold, clam my skin - the vegetable- crea ture that hatches from an "egg" in dark, dank earth. Mink Rancher Sues Two Pilots Portland - (UPD - A mink rancher's complaint that two pilots flew so low they scared his mink literally to death will be heard in Federal Court here July 11. Rancher Buck Witt of Can- by filed the $30,565 suit against 1st Lt. Richard Ball- weber of Seattle and 2nd Lt. Walter Wood of Fort Knox, Ky. Witt said the pilots flew their plane less than 500 feet above his mink sheds and barn in May, 1961. He said the noise caused some female mink to panic and go beserk, killing or aborting their young.
