(Knackstedt photo) Senior Citizens7 Week Opens Today The observance of Senior Citizen!' week her starts at 1 o'clock tills afternoon when the Senior Activity center holds open house for its mem bers and the general public until 3 o'clock. Mrs. Clayton Walker, chairman of arrange ments, announced the pro gram. From 1 until 2 p.m. the re ception committee will be Dr. and Mrs. Frank Roberts, Mr. and Mrs. Russ Jamison, Mrs. Kenneth Bowker, Mrs. Adolf Von Burgen, Mrs. Fred Ran kin and William Jones. Pour ing will be Mrs. Charles Kyer and Mrs. C. A. Thatcher. Reg istration will be In charge of Mrs. John Snliss and Miss Maggie Coutls. The Arm Chair Travel group will fur nish refreshments and act as hosts. From 2 to 3 o'clock, menv bcrs of the two art classes will serve as hosts and guides. The art classes, under the direction of their teachers, Mrs. Gene Williams, and Mrs. Ross Twedcll hung their ex hibit of pictures and arranged the displays of mosaic, sculp ture, and woodcarving Satur day afternoon. All friends and patrons are invited to visit the Center aft er or before they visit a Sabin clinic for their polio vaccine and those working at the clinics are invited to come in for coffee and cookies after their shifts of duly. Starting Monday, May 14, will be a week of planned fes tivities for seniors in Jackson County under the direction of the committee headed by Dr. Roberts and Mrs. Bowker. Monday afternoon a special Arm Chair Travel show at the Center al one o'clock will be a fishing trip down the Rogue river with G. Z. Wollum of the Rogue Valley Manor. Ar dent fishermen are especially invited. These shows will con tinue weekly. Paintings will hang in the center all during the week and guests who miss the open house are asked to visit the center during the week, or attend the art classes held Tuesday and Saturday afternoons. It was held in the dining hall of the First Methodist church. It was stated that 21 churches wei represented and a number from other towns were present. The luncheon chairman was Mrs. Arnold Bohnert. Tables were" centered with May bas kets of colorful spring flow ers and refreshments too, were in a spring theme. Mrs. Lyle Schoppcrt, pro gram chairman, presided dur ing the program hour. The Rev. Clifford Young gave the table prayer and Mrs. Schoppert introduced ministers and their wives. Mrs. D. G. MacDougal, ac companied by Mrs. Leslie Boardman, sang an English air of the 17th century and a prayer by St. Francis of As sissi. Mrs. Angus Todd gave a flannelgraph portrayal of the day's theme, "One Fam ily Under God: Who is My Family?" Mrs. Todd, Bible history teacher in the schools stressed the importance of realizing the positive thought that all men are God's children and are equal in His sight. The Rev. Clifford Young, presi dent of the Jackson County Board of Christian Education, spoke of the work being car ried on by Mrs. Todd and her assistant, Mrs. Lawrence Leo nard, as they bring stories of Bible history to children whose parents ask for this in struction in the schools. It was explained by Mrs. Schop pert that proceeds from the Fellowship luncheon go to ward the Christian education work. The Rev. Mr. Young dedicated the offering re ceived. Dr. George Roseberry, speaking on the day's theme, explained how necessary it is that we realize how similar God's children are rather than dissimilar; that no one racial group has people of more brilliant minds than another. "Any race can acquire cul ture," he staled, "if the effort is made with God's help to achieve the desired culture." In concluding. Dr. Rose berry said "Christians should learn to appreciate those of other creeds and cultures." The chairmen, Mrs. Schop pcrt and Mrs. Arnold Boh nert, thanked all who had as sisted on committees and Mrs. Everett Lasher, president of the council, also expressed appreciation to those in charge of the event. Beta Nu Chapter Session Planned; Donation Made E(H!le Point The next meet ing of the Beta Nu chapter, Epsilon Sigma Alpha sorority, chattered last February, is scheduled for May lfl when Mrs. Vcrn Steward will be the hostess. At the May 2 meeting of the chapter, members voted to contribute $50 to a state philanthropic project, the Crippled Children's hospital school. Members discussed assist ing at the mobile tuberculosis x-ray unit June 19 in Eagle Point. Mis. Helen Uerlings, Mrs. Keith Sherer and Mrs. Ken neth Vannice reported on a slate convention which they attended April 27 through 29 In La Grande. Banks will be taken to meetings to accumulate funds for next year's convention in Roscbnrg. Mrs. Steward, phil anthropic chairman, stated that the Easter seal coin con tainers had been collected. Bates, Dale Bates, Mrs. Esther Hopper, Mrs. Donald Geren, Kenneth Vannice, and Doug las Harshbarger, all of the Eagle Point High school teach-, ing staff. The Clarence Davies award was announced as a special recognition award in honor of Mr.. Davies who is retiring from the Eagle Point teach ing staff this year. This award is to be given to a senior stu dent for four years of out standing English. Candidates for the school Orchestra Plans Year End Program Ashland- The Southern Or egon Little Symphony orche tra will present its final con cert of the season at 8 p.m., Sunday, May 20 in Churchill auditorium, it was announced by Dr. Herbert Cecil, conduc tor of the orchestra. Featured performers at the concert will be Janet Ivie and Virginia Cecil, duo-pianists, who will play Mozart's "Concerto No. 10 in E Flat" for two pianos I chapter of Beta Sigma Phi. ana orcncsira. featuring James Maffett and Roy Taylor, trumpeters. The Rev. Alphia Lem ley performed the ceremony. The bride's parents are Mr. and Mrs. Fred W. Lyon, 110 Clover lane, and the bride groom is a son of Mr. and Mrs. F. J. Witt, Sacramento, Calif. Mr. Lyon gave his daughter in marriage. Miss Pamela Lyon, a sister of the bride, was maid of honor, and Don Condicr of Grants Pass was best man. For her wedding the bride chose a satin ballerina length gown with fitted bodice and three quarter length sleeves. Her shoulder length veil was held from a coronet of pearls. She carried a bouquet of a white orchid with carnations and lily of the valley. The maid of honor wore an orchid colored sheath dress with over-jacket and her bou quet was of white carnations. Baskets of spring flowers decorated the church. A reception was given by t'-e bride's parents at the American Legion hall and Delegates Named For Convention; District To Meet Shady Cove-Delecates for a department convention of auxiliaries to the Veterans of Foreign Wars In Klamath Falls June 20 through June 23, were elected at a meeting of the auxiliary to Steelhead post held last week in the VFW hall. Those elected are Mrs. Jobie Bryan, Mrs. Harry Birch. Mrs. Dale Sawyer and Mrs. Eve Prentice. Mrs. Kenneth Clair em ducted the meeting. Announcement also was made regarding plans for a district meeting to be held Sunday, May 13, at the VFW hall in Medford. A potluck luncheon will be served at 12 noon and each member is asked to take a salad and ta ble service.
