Naumes, Shugart, flouse, Smith Take District Title o in Tennis Medford High school bo9 and girls' tennis teams gar nered the team champion ships on Friday in the district tournament at the Southern Oregon, college tennis courts in Ashland. The Tornado girls made a clean sweep against limited opposition in their competition while the boys gained first and second in singles. Sweep by the Medford girls gave them all 12 possible points and the boys totaled five points to edge Grants Pass . by one for the honors. Medford's champions were Mike Naumes and Sandy Shu gart in singles and Sue House and Kathy Smith in doubles. Dick Blacksmith and Mike Blanchard, Grants Pass, took the boys' double crown. The Tornado will have nine girls ana two boys in the state tourney, Grants Pass three boys and Ashland and Klamath Falls each two boys. Friday Red Raider hurlcr Dave Hughes fanned 13 East ern Oregon batters and al lowed only two infield singles as SOC won 3-1. On Saturday it was the same story for the Raiders as a pair of right-handers, Earle Tichenor and Don Johnson, hurled 11-4 and 6-1 wins Southern Oregon remains in contention for the Oregon Col legiate Conference champion ship with the three victories. The Raiders have a 7-1 league record, which ranks them sec ond behind Portland State. Hughes, who fanned at least one EOC in every inning, aid ed his own cause Friday with a brace of singles in four at bats. He drove in the eventual winning run with a timely one-baser in the fifth inning that scored Damien Rossetto who was on base with a dou ble. Freshman Paul Blinka gave the Raiders an insurance tal ly in the sixth when he led off with his third home run of the year, a 355-foot shot over the right-center field fence. 13 BASE BLOWS Saturday's first game saw Tichenor blank the Mounties on only two hits over the four frames before EOC came up with three straight singles and three tallies in the fifth. Meanwhile, the hitting- minded Raiders were blasting two EOC hurlers for 13 base blows, including a single and double off the bat of Rossetto who also had three RBIs. Hughes rapped out his second homer of the year with no body on base in the fourth and also had a run-scoring single to his credit. Bill Potter, who gave way to reliefer Gary Williamson in the third inning when SOC Eagle Point Cinder men Win Over Phoenix High Phoenix Eagle Point High surprised Phoenix Fri day in a dual track meet here. Score was 63-56 to 58-16 with the final event, the re lay, deciding the issue. Eagle Point led the Pirates two thirds of a point before claim ing that event. Only one week before Phoe nix had defeated EP by 44 points, 82Vi to 38V$. Each school gained a first place in seven contests this time. The Eagles swept both dashes and the Pirates the pole vault. Double Winners Steve Geren and Darrell Stock were double winners for EP. Geren won the 100 and 440-yard runs and Stock the discus and 220. Tichenor gave up seven hits, walked six and whiffed seven to earn h i s fourth triumph of the cam paign. In the series finale, John son allowed only three hits. including a third inning triple by Don Nelson who later scor ed the Mounts' only run, over the seven-inning route. The Raider sophomore gave up only three bases on balls while setting 12 EOC batters down on strikes. Fan 29 Timts Eastern Oregon batters fan ned 29 times over the three games while only two Raid ers went down via the strike out route. The Raiders overcame a 1-0 EOC lead with a solo tally in the third as Rossetto chas ed home Bill Franks with a triple. Then the Redmcn went ahead for good in the fourth as a single by Don Jaquette and Bill Bailey's squeeze bunt put two runs across the plate. Three SOC insurance tallies scored in the sixth to hand EOC hurler, Duke Feigner, the loss. Johnson's win was his third of the season. Southern Oregon, which plays Oregon Tech at Klam ath Fills in a 3 p.m. game on Tuesday, now has a 13-7 season record. Klamath tipped the Torna do 4 to 2 in the opener to hand Medford its first loss in six league counting games. The Pels also whacked Med ford 10 to 5 in the non-league second tussle on the Tornado diamond. The Pels maintained a sec ond place tie with Ashland in the circuit, cutting the Medford lead to one game. Ashland beat Crater 2 to 0 yesterday in a conference tus sle. Three runs in the first in ning proved enough for vic tory for the KF nine in the Saturday starter. One for in surance was added in the third. The Pels, smacking the ball hard, used singles by Sherm Allen, Kent Franklin and Kent Hunsaker, a squeeze bum by Jack Pryor, two bas es on balls and two errors in the first inning. (UPD Cecil Ira scattered 11 hits to pitch Oregon State to a 10-0 win over Washington In a North ern division baseball game here Friday. The win was the fifth In six starts in the division for the Beavers. Ira, a junior left-hander, struck out four and gave up no walks to register his eighth win in as many decisions. Casey Thompson was the los ing pitcher. Brian Bailey hit a two-run homer for Oregon State in the first inning. Cyclone Quint Bowls at Salem Loop pacers In the Oregon Professional Bowling league meet today when the front running Salem Valley Vic tors (6-2) meet the second place Medford Cyclones (5-2) in an afternoon match. The tussle will be at the M and M Bowl in Salem. Salem defeated Medford in an earlier match of the slate. However, followers of the Cy clones feel they are capable of pulling even with the Vic tors. Frank Evans with a 199 av erage heads the Capital city club. Bob Dampsey has a 198 mark among the Medford players who have bowled the most. Ron Dixon is 204 for four games. fa.
