Burleson Runs 4:01.2 Mile as Oregon Wins Eugene - (UPP - Oregon's powerful track forces set sev en meet records and had three more wiped out by excessive wind Saturday in illoping Oregon State 98-45 in a dual meet. The victory gave Oregon eight straight meet victories this year, 35 wins in a row against Northern division foes and 36 straight dual meet tri umphs at home. Collegiate high hurdles champion Jerry Tarr was clocked in 13.5 for the highs, the best in the nation this year, but a 5.5 mile-an-hour wind kept him from setting Crater 2nd in Bend Invitational Meet Bend - Bend High school won its own invitational track meet here Saturday aft ernoon by edging Crater of Central Point by 5V4 points. The Lava Bears scored 50V4 MH Second In Upstate Medford high golfer, with a two-day 80S aggregate), tied for second place Friday and Saturday in the Upstate Golf tourney at Corvallis. Norih Eugene was winner ' with 401-397798. Medford shot 400 on Friday to set the pace and 405 on Saturday. South Salem was 402-403-805. Corvallis had 813, South Eugene 824 and Albany 841. Scores for other schools in the 10-ieam field were not avail able. Don Morrow with 75-75 150 for North Eugene was medalist. Hich Knight snot 81-73154 for Medford and had the best Saturday card. Taking thirds were Dave Molloy in the shot put, Dave Burns in the discus, Chuck Taylor in the broad jump, Darrcll Badger in the 1,500 meters and Swanson in the 400 meters. Cornel fourths were George Jannusch in the javelin and Sherm Kigcr in the 100 me ters. Uf!i-- Decid edly, a big gray colt froii California, shattered the 22-year-old track record at Churchill Downs Saturday with a tremendous run through the stretch to win the Kentucky Derby and era,? Whirlaway's almost im pregnable mark from the rec ord books. With Jockey Bill Hartack jn the saddle Decidedly came up from far back with a light ning burst of speed that car ried him to a two and a quar ter length victory in the sparkling time of 2:00 25. The time casil: beat the record established by Whirl away in 1941 when Mr. Long tail was timed in 2:01 25. Roman Line, tabbed as a speed horse who never could last for the Kentucky Derby distance of a mile and a quar ter was a surprise second while favored Ridan was third in the field of 15 of the McLoughlin Winner of Track Tilt McLaughlin eighth grade won 103 to 10 and the sev enth was victor 55 56 to 21 16 Friday in track and field contention against Cen tral Point. The Mac eighth took all the firsts in its class and swept seven events. Mike Al len won the 75 and 150-yard sprints for the Medford team and also took the broad jump. Lindell Carney won the shot put and discus. Phil Taylor nabbed the 330 run, the shot put and pole vault for the McLaughlin sev enth which had clear firsts in seven events and a tie in another. Cental Point's Pierce won the broad jump and tied ! for first in the 150. j Taylor's 9 feet 8 inches is a seventh grade pole vault record for McLoughlin. Medford thinclads won firsts in 10 of the events and swept all points in five of them. Toews toured the 880-yard-er in 1:58.5 to shear two tenths of a second off his pre vious Medford school best. Mcdford's Don Snodgrass was second in 1:59.4 which is his personal best. Eaton captured the high hurdles in 15.1 and the lows in 20.7. He won the high at 6 feet '4 inch. Bob Dearing gained two of Klamath Falls' four firsts. He nabbed the javelin with 182 SO Netters Slate Trip Ashland - Southern Ore gon's balanced tennis team heads north this week to play a scries of five dual matches in a span of four days starting Wednesday against Whitworth in a morning match at Salem and concluding Saturday in Salem against -Willamette university. Also on Wednesday, the Red Raider netters meet Oregon college in an afternoon match at Monmouth. Oregon State university and Portland State will provide the competition for the Ashlanders on Thurs day and Friday in Corvallis and Portland, respectively. Dr. Alex Petersen's squad ran its season win-loss record to 7-4 when it dropped a close 4-3 verdict to the powerful OSU Beavers two weeks ago. A return match between the two teams was rained out here last Tuesday. Lanky Gene Simmons con tinues to set tlie team pace in individual records for singles play. The sophomore from Klamath Falls has lost only two of 11 matches for SOC this spring. Another soph, Larry Eickworth, and fresh man John McKinley both have 7-4 marks. A film concerning jet-propelled boats on the Colorado river will be shown and the game commission's proposal to boost hunting and fishing license fees will be disrussed.
