OREGON Beta Sigma Phi Holds Founders' Day Banquet The 3 lat anniversary of the founding of Beta Sigma Phi tororily wai observed at a banquet given by the group's City council April 30 at Kim's restaurant. Members and guests of the seven Jackson county chapters attended. In addition to the banquet, traditional ceremonies were observed. The last year's ac tivities of each chapter re viewed and new members wel comed. Mrs. Richard Knoll, Beta Upsilon chapter, was chair man of the observance. Toast mistress was Mrs. Carrol Ad ams. Other members having part In the progrnm were Mrs. Clifford Curl, Mrs. Ronald Hall and Mrs. F. N. Sturnes. Mrs. Wayne Turpin present ed a special message from the sorority's founder at Interna tional headquarters in Kansas City. Guest speaker was Mrs. Frank VanDykc, dean of girls at McLoughlln Junior High school. Her topic was "Gra cious Living." Sides, 826 Murray avenue, returned home last Sunday after a week's trip to the Seattle World's Fair and Vicloria, B. C. They were accompanied by Mrs. Sides' sister and brother-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. O. C. Teppen, Duluth, Minn., who visited with the couple here for ten days prior to at tending the fair. The travelers found the fair Interesting and colorful and commented that standing in line was the order of Ihe day for the more worthwhile fea tures of the event. They wore intrigued with Victoria. nw the famous Buteharl Gardens, the Josephine Tussaud wax figures brought there from London, and the Parliament building. Mr. and Mrs. Teppen re turned with Ihe Sides as far as Portland, visiting there with relatives before return ing home. New Members Honored Guests At Church Tea Nearly 100 guests attended a tea honoring new women members of the First Presby terian church Friday after noon, April 27, in the Fellow ship hall of the church. The tea was planned by Ihe Fel lowship committee with Mrs. Wallace Brill as chairman. Pouring during the after noon were the Mrs. D. Kirk- land West, wife of the minister of the church; Mrs. Chester Wendt. Mrs. Lloyd Neilsnn, Mrs. Arnold Bohnert, Mrs. Glen Harrison, Mrs. Austin! King and Mrs. M. F. Hoover. I Mrs. James K. Hoev was in charge of the Riiest book. The musical program fea tured Mrs. Charles Champ lin, soloist, and the Madrigal singers from Medford High school, directed by Lynn Sjolund. The accompanists were Mrs. Harold Head and Mrs. George Maddox. Traveler Returns From California Central Point - Mrs. W. C. Higinbotham, Old Stage road, Central Point, has returned to her home after spending 1(1 days visiting friends in Wil mington. Calif., in the Los An geles area. She was a guest of Dr. and Mrs. George R. Bergman. Mrs Hcrunian is the former Lois Frazee. While in southern California Mrs. Higinbotham visited the Mt. Of particular inieresi auring ine convention was the report of Mrs. Celia Everett, Portland. 1961 hospital chairman, on service supplied to the state s veteran hospitals. During the year $1054 was contributed, and gifts valued at S5.703. Among certificates awarded to VAVS representatives was a 300-hour certificate to Mrs. Mary Jensen, a volunteer at Sam Jackson hospital, Port land. Mrs. Eakin and Mrs. Mary Parker, representative and alternate from the local chapter to the White City dom iciliary, each have been awarded 1000-hour certificates. (Simonson-Walker photos) Activity Center Prepares For Open House May 13 The Senior Activity center. 601 East Jackson street, will hold its fourth annual open house Sunday, May 13, from 1 lo 5 p.m. as the first event of Senior Citizens week to be celebrated May 13 to 19 by the Rogue Valley Council on Aging. This is the first date an nounced by the chairman, Dr. Frank Roberts and his co chairman, Mrs. Kenneth Bow ker of Central Point of a series of events planned to honor the senior members of i Ihe communities of Jackson county. During the week the public will view products of the talents, abilities, and cul tural resources of senior citi zens and what is available in this retired porfion of the population. Mrs. Clayton Walker and Mrs. Fred Rankin are co chairmen of Ihe open house and will be assisted by the teachers, hostesses and mem bers of tlie eight classes which meet each week at the center. Assisting them will be the house committee headed by William Jones. An art exhibit of paintings. mosaic craft, clav sculpture and woodcarvins will be shown and music will he fur - nished by the Senior Center orchestra which will give a concert from 3:30 to 5 p.m. Refreshments will be con tributed and served by the members of the classos, who will be hosts and guides. From I to 2 p.m. the Arm Chair travel group will be in charge; 15 South Central iff 2 to 3 p.m. the two art classes; 3 to 4 p.m. the drama, shuffle board and mosaic classes; and from 4 to 5 p.m. the Spanish classes and orchestra. The regular hosts for each class will handle the guest book during the hours assigned. Mrs. Walker is in charge of the reception committee and the table hostesses. The public is invited to at tend as well as the more than 40ft members of the center and of the three senior clubs which have been formed in Medford, White City, and Ashland under the leadership o Dr. Roberts during the past four years. The usual schedule will be carried on at the center. Monday, May 7, the Arm Chair Travel group will be entertained by Mrs. Henry Moeller of Delta Water road, who will show colored slides taken on a trip to Europe. Mr. and Mrs.' Moeller traveled abroad to visit his mother, Mrs. Magdclina Moeller, who lives at Schoenberg, a village near Kiel in northern Ger many on the Baltic sea. They also visited Switzer land and another Army base near Frankfurt. Germany, and Hamburg en route to Schoenberg. Prior lo return ing to the United States they visited Denmark. The program will begin at 1 p m. The Tuesday art class has been asked to take with them the pictures they wish to dis play at the open house, when they atten.l class May 8. The Saturday art class will meet Friday al 1 p m. instead of the usual day to finish up pictures they are getting ready for the art exhibit. Mrs. Ruby Tweriell, teacher, has asked them to take at least three pictures they plan to ex hibit in order that two may be chosen. The Saturday class time will be used to hang the pic tures of both classes and all other art obiects. mosaic, wood carving and sculpture. ' Auxiliary Has Election Ashland Mrs. John Scott Hall is the new president of the American Legion auxil iary, having been elected at the last meeting. On her ex ecutive board will be M r s. The guest speaker was Mrs. Mary L. Carpenter, case work er supervisor for Jackson County Welfare commission. She gave an interesting ac count of the child welfare program, telling of its aim to provide protection and care for neglected children or those whose environment might be a cause for juvenile delin quency. Much of the welfare service is given to children in their own homes, while others are placed in foster homes, she said.
