Birch Head Sees Red Control of U.S. by 1972 - Brunswick, Maine - OTP -bert W. Welch, founder of the John Birch Society, Wednesday night contended j that the United States might be under Communist control by 1972. Welch told a Bowdoin col lege political forum that "as we move toward 1972 there will be a loss of freedom." ''We'll see the full scourge ! of brutal Communist control over our country by 1972, if not before," the former Bel mont, Mass., candy maker told a capacity crowd of 700 students, newsmen and townspeople. Welch said he could see nothing on the horizon that would "change the course of this action." j Not a Prediction In his 80-minute talk, Welch said he was. not predicting that the Communist takeover would come to pass but said "there are clear indications from past history" that it will. "There has been no inves tigation of Communist infiltra tion in government since 1956," he said. "Communists in government are climbing faster and higher than ever." The Bowdoin political is sues committee attacked Welch's appearance by dis tributing pamphets to persons as they entered Packard the ater to hear the speech.
