A Grants In Record-Busting Rotary Meet Grants Pass - Grants Pass high's track and field aggre- gation, bulging with depth " and power, tar outran the op !"position here Saturday after noon in the annual Rotary ; club meet. . And, Medford, finishing in second place in a contest fea ; tured by an array of record . busting efforts, was away in front of the rest of the field. " The Cavemen of Coach Russ Werner amassed 234 'I points ' as they won eight of the 14 - events, set two meet marks and tied another. Coach Dean . Benson's Black Tornado had a 96 712 count in establishing three new Rotary records, as it took first in four events. Rogue River had 33 'i . points, Roseburg 29 '2, Eagle Point 21 56 and Myrtle Creek 20V6. Hill Wins Three Medford's Jim Hill garner- " cd the day's individual hon ors, by winning the 100 and 220-yard dashes in the blazing time of 9.9 and 22.2 and the broad jump with 210 feet 9'i inches. His two sprint times were records. The other Tornado record smasher was sophomore Steve Toews who ran the half-mile in 1:58.7. This time also eclip sed the Medford school mark of 1:59.1 set several years ago by Bilbee Lane. Breaking standards for G ints Pass were Gil Smith with 19.7 in the low hurdles and Steve Ausland with 198 2Vi in the javelin. GP's Den nis O'Leary tied the high hur dles standard by taking that event in 14.9. j The other meet mark fell .to Mike Crunican, Roseburg, "who ran the mile in 4:32. Other firsts for the Cave men were Marty Bauer 51-7 in the shot put, Bob Shcpard a measured six feet in the high jump, the relay team in 1:31.2, Gary Van Koten 12-9 in the pole vault and Mike Curtis 148-52 in the discus. The Comet varsity subdued its Indian counterpart 71 to 50. Crater dominated the jun ior varsity contention 87 to 33. First places were taken in 10 events by the Central oPint school. John Champ, Crater, and Mike Crunican, Roseburg, were varsity double winners. Champ took the high hur dles in 15.2 and the low bar riers in 20.5. Crunican claim ed the mile in 4:41.8 and the half mile in 2:08 8. Al Joel son captured the 220 dash in GP Whips Klamath In SO Mix Grants Pass - Grants Pass high recorded its first South ern Oregon conference base ball win of the season here Friday when it blanked Klamath Falls 5 to 0 in the first game of a doublehead er here. Klamath took the second fray, a non counter 9 to 1. First game outcome left each team with a 1-2 record In the league standings. Dave Hauntz twirled a three-hiler for GP, walking one and whiffing four. Three of the Cavemen runs came on five hits In the fifth inning. Mike Millemann, Gary Rcddick, Hauntz, Larry Jones and Jim Carson each singled. A trio of bases on balls, a groundout and an error aided GP in the sixth inning when two runs crossed. Ashlanders Trim Pels In Track Ashland - Ashland high track and field men trimmed Klamath Falls on Friday in a dual meet here, G8 to 54. The meet was moved ahead after original Friday schedul ing. Ashland scored firsts in nine of the 14 events, taking all but one of the races. Gary Wallace was a double victor for the host Grizzlies. He nabbed the quarter-mile in 53.6 and the furlong in 23.8. OREGON SIPdDMTS S0C Wins Two Over Humboldt Areata, Calif.-Southern Or egon college squeezed out two victories to one defeat when it met Humboldt State college at Areata, Calif., Saturday. It lost the first game 2 to 8 and won the second and third games 4 to 1 and 10 to 7. Southern Oregon was slow in gathering steam in the first game. Only runs came in the fourth inning-two. Ted Snapp got two hits for three times at bat and Dennis Tontoni got one for two for Humboldt. Southern Oregon's Jesse Munyon scored two for three to rank as top hitter for the first game. The Red Raiders of South ern Oregon started out with one run in the first inning, got none in the second, scored one in the third and wound up with two in the seventh. Paul Blinka, freshman from Grants Pass, put the game on ica for Southern Oregon by Phoenix Pirates Victors Over IV in Track Dual Cave Junction-Mike Cons bruck garnered three first places and Curt Harris won two events and tied for tops in another Friday in a Phoe nix High dual track meet win here over Illinois Valley.
