Eu gen - South Salem High school grabbed two Ilrst places, set one record and tabulated 52 points here Sat urday afternoon to take the Metropolitan division cham pionship in the annual Hay ward relays here. Cottage Grove displayed its perennial power in Class A by onnpyine the crown again with 72 V4 points. It was the eventh straight mantle in this class for the Lions. In addition to the two-mile South won the mile relay, gained second in the high jump and captured thirds in the shot put, the 440, the dis tance medley and the shuttle hurdles. Cottage Grove i had first places in the shot put, the high jump, the distance med ' ley and the mile along with the pole vault tie. The Lions took second in the javelin and third in the broad jump. They had fourths in the two mile and shuttle hurdles and a sixth in the discus. OSU Takes 12th Game Cor va Ills - IUPD - The un defeated Oregon State Bea vers rolled up their 12th straight baseball victory by defeating the Seattle Chief tains 10-0 here Friday. Kirk Chapman and Dave Long sparked the Beavers 16 hit attack with home runs in the seventh inning. Chap man's homer came with two men on base and Long hit his four - bagger with the bases empty. Brian Bailey hit a three run triple for Oregon State. in the eighth inning. Little Cecil Ira, a lefthand er, shut out the Chieftains on six hits. He struck out seven batters. Linfield Nabs Opener in NWL United Press International Linfield's Wildcats, seeking their fourth straight North west conference baseball title. posted a 9-0 victory over Pa cific in a conference opener at McMinnville Friday. In other conference open ers, Lewis and Clark edged Wililametle 6-5 at Portland and College of Idaho defeated Whitman 10-2 at Walla Walla, Wash. Steve Ausland hurled the spear a mighty 209-10 for the Cavemen. Medford took thirds In the broad jump and two-mile in Metro, tied for third in the high jump and got fifths in the 440 and distance medley. Crater's other points in Class A were on a second in the shot, thirds in the discus and broad jump, fourths in the 880 and mile and fifth in the two mile. Dave Burns was third in the discus for the Comets. Grants Pass scored a sec ond in the pole vault, a third in the discus, a tie for fourth in the high jump, a tie for fourth in the vault, a fourth in the mile and a sixth in the shot. The Red Raiders, who have won all four outings this year, piled up 100 'i points while Yuba Junior College was sec ond with 62, Shasta third with 32 'a and College of Siskiyoug fourth with nine. Nampa JC was scoreless. Doyle Bransom was a triple winner for SOC, winning the 100 yard dash, 220 and broad jump. Freshman Bill White won both hurdle events for tht Ashland collegians, nab bing the lows in 24.6 which tied the SOC school record, Bransom's winning time in the century was recorded at :10.9, but after the race it was discovered that the course was actually 110 yards long in stead of 100. Sophomore Ron Baker, win ner in the shot put, got off his best toss of his career, 45 feet, 3 inches. Another soph, Harold. Hau gen, was timed In 1:59.7 in the 880 but was beaten by Yuba's George Luzovich by .2 of a second. Ninth graders won 75 to 47 over Crater freshmen. Against North Grants Pass the Hornet seventh was 68 to 44 VS victor and the eighth won 58 to 18'4. Steve Davis was a triple victor for the Hedrick ninth. He took the high jump, the shot put and the 150-yard sprint. Double winners for the Comets of Crater were Charles Taylor in the 75 and broad jump and Kelly Wilson in the 1320 and 660-yard runs. Dave Durant cracked his own school record with 14.2 in the 120 low hurdles. His old mark of 14.4 was set last week. Johnson Wins Three Hedrick had eight firsts and Crater six. For the Hornet eighth Dick Johnson won the 75, the 150 and the broad jump. Randy Spaur copped the javelin and tied for first with Bill Collins in the pole vault along with two rivals. Johnson s 18 feet 4 inches in the broad jump, Collins' and Spaur's 10-1 vault and the Bill Durante 49 8 shot put were new Hedrick eighth school marks. Seventh graders of the Med ford school 'had firsts in all but one event against GP. OREGON Wetro SOC Baseballers Split Twin Ashland - Southern Oregon split a double-header with the Oregon College Wolves here Saturday to give the Raiders the week end series, three games to two. The Red Raiders came back to win the second half of Sat urday's twin-bill, 7-4, after the Wolves had buried the SOC club beneath a 11-2 avalanche in the opener. Friday the Raiders won a 11-8 slugfest! Ted Schopf's crew now has a 3-1 win-lass record in the Oregon Collegiate conference.' OCE is 1-2. . Friday the Ashlanders had to come from behind before pulling out with their second straight OCC victory. The Wolves held a 7-4 lead going into the bottom half of the fourth inning when SOC ex ploded to tie up matters at 7 all. Dave Hughes' run-scoring double and a two-run single off the bat of John Buck squared the tilt in the fourth. . In the fifth, SOC, tallied four markers to sew up the wild, free - swinging battle. A pair of walks, an OCE error and Hughes' line-drive two bagger to right-center which plated two Raider funners were the big factors of the in ning. Big Earle Tichenor who gave up only three hlU in relief from the third to the eighth Inning when he tired, earned the win, his second straight in a relief role in four days. Lefty Fred Price, the second of three OCE hurlers, was the loser. Saturday morning the Wolves unloaded an 18 -hit barrage against three Raider pitchers en route to their lop sided win. Lee Land and Jim Luke each had three safe blows to spark the victor's big attack. John Gooding, a left-hand er, yielded only five hits in holding the Raiders at bay. Regular catcher Jess Munyon, playing left field, had two of SOC's hits, a single and dou ble, in three trips. Raider starter, Marty Vogler, got the loss. In the series finale, South ern Oregon erupted for five big runs in the first frame and never trailed after that as right-handers Dave Burwell and Don Johnson limited the visitors to only six hits. John son, the winner, was touched for only one safety over the final four stanzas. Hughes, hitting Into a strong wind, gave the Raiders two insurance runs in the sixth when he hit a homer over the right-field fence with Don Jaquette on base. Joe Fundcrburg also was 3-3 for the winners, all singles. Diminuitive Clancey Wil liams, 5-2 pitcher, went the distance for OCE to be charged with the loss. He walked five and had no strike outs. Southern Oregon vies it BYU Beats Utah St. In Baseball Twice Logan, Utah - IUPD - Brig ham Young university bat ters had a field day as they collected 36 runs in a two game shellacking of hapless Utah State, 18-5 and 18-3, in a Skyline conference twinbill Saturday. Cougar batters rapped out a total of 31 hits, including four home runs as BYU swept to its third straight Western Division victory. The Cou gars were undefeated in dl vision play last season. Medford Netters Trim Marshfield, KF Teams Mcdford'i Black Tornado tennis players won two matches here yesterday by like scores of 6 to 1. The prepstcrs beat Marsh field of Coos Bay in the morn ing and Klamath Union high in the afternoon. The afternoon verdict stretched Mcdfnrd's unbeaten record in the Southern Oregon conference to five straight matches. Medford will play Eureka, Calif., here on Tuesday and will go to Eureka next Satur nay. The Tornado has a con ference match with Ashland on Thursday. A legal notice calling for the bids appears elsewhere in the Mail Tribune today. It is signed for the committee by R. H. The two California teams together did not rack up enough points to even come close to the winning Oregon team. OSU finished with 99 points, compared to 48 for UC and 15 for Fresno.
