APRIL IS. 1962 B 7 American Leagu Roundup Yankees Defeat Tigers by 1 1 to 5 By Unittd Prni Intatnitional John BUnchard led i 15 hit Yankee assault with a three-run homer and a .ingle, Saturday to help power New York to an 11-5 victory over the Detroit Tigers. Blanchard, subbing In left field for Yogi Berra, who was out with a pulled leg muscle, drove in the Yankees' first four runs with a single in the first inning and a three-run homer in the third. Norm Cash poled his first two homers of the season for the Tigers in the second and sixth innings, both with the bases empty. The Cleveland Indians col lected six runs on iix hits in the first inning to defeat Washington, 6-4. Willie Kirk land's bases loaded double was a key hit in handing the Senators their first loss of the season Gary Bell collected the win, although he gave up 12 hits, Including a three-run homer hy Dale Long and a solo blast by Danny O'Connell. Claude Osteen lasted only one-third of an inning and was charged with the defeat. Back-to-back home run by Baltimore's Brooks Robinson and Cus Triandos in the sec ond inning provided Chuck Estrada with a 3-0 victory over Boston. Estrada gave up both Boston hits before re tiring with a blistered index Hall pitched hitless ball dur ing the last two frames. Gene Conley was the losing pitcher. Bob Rodgers drove in five Los Angeles runs and Lee Thomas unloaded a three-run homer to give the Angels a 12-5 victory over the Minne sota Twins. Thomas' homer in the ninth was his first hit of the season. Ryne Duren, hurling three hitless relief Inning, was credited with the triumph. Georges Maranda was the loser, despite heavy Minne sota power that accounted for home runs by Zoilo Versalles, Lenny Green and Rich Rol lins. Rogue River was third with 35 and cracked two records. Central Linn beat out Heedsport 40 to 35'i for the Class B championship. Scap poose took third with 24V4. St. Mary's high'i two-mile relay team of Allan Wruck, Pat Stinson, Steve Cook and Tom Rouhier set a new stand ard of 8:33.7, beating a mark a Crusader quartet wrote last year. Jim Calhoun recorded a mark of 188 feet 3 inches in the javelin and Joe Kaiser pole vaulted 11-6 for the Cru saders and a new mark. SO Tennis Team Loses to OSU, Beats 2 Others Ashland - Powerful Oregon State University went unde feated in three matches here this week end, downing Southern Oregon 6-1 on Fri day and Humboldt State and Seattle University by identt cal 7-0 scores on Saturday. The talent-laden Beavers won all five singles scraps and the No. 2 doubles match from Southern Oregon on Friday. The only Red Raider win was picked up by the doubles team of John Root and Ron Singler. Southern Oregon came back after the Friday loss to blank both Seattle and Humboldt by 7-0 counts. Friday Seattle U. edged Humboldt Stale, 4-3 before both teams were whitewashed on Saturday. one was tied in the C division. Corbett set a new time of 11:08 in the distance medley and knotted the mark of 36.6. St. Mary's seconds were by the sprint medley team of Pete Naumes, Tom Darland, Paul Elliott and Pat Stinson, the distance medley group of Wruck, Tim Darland, Cook and Rouhier and the shuttle hurdles crew of Naumes, Tom Darland and Elliott. Jim Webb, Mike O'Hara, Kaiser and Tom Darland ran third in the 440 and Jeff Randolph was fourth for SM in the javelin. Whipple Butts Mark Stiehl was fourth in the dis cus for RR. Frantz was second in the javelin and Rogue Riv er took fourth in the two-mile relay. Unbeaten Oregon Track Team Defeats Stanford Eugene, Ore. - IUPI) - Ore-1 world's 100-meter record, set gon's unbeaten track team meet record of 21.0 in tha rolled over Stanford 90-41 in a dual meet here Saturday. Nine meet records were broken and two others were tied. II was the sixth straight victory for the Ducks, who next week face powerful Southern California at Los Angeles. Oregon now has won 34 consecutive dual meets at home. NCAA hurdles champion Jerry Tarr of Oregon set two meet records with a 13.8 clocking in the highs and a 23.S clocking in the lows.
