APRIL 12. 1962 Two Rogue valley contin gents' will aim to keep up their domination and three others will aim to improve on last year's performances Fri day in the opening day's com petition of the annual Hay ward relays at Eugene. St. Mary's of Medford will go as the defending Class C champion and seek its fourth straight crown. Rogue River will aim for -top honors' after being runnerup last year and third the year before. Class B entrants tomorrow will be Phoenix. Eaple Point and Illinois Valley. None of the three werr in title conten tion last season. Phoenix moved into Class B last year after being Class C second in I960. The meet, held at Univer sity of Oregon, will have its metropolitan and A division rivalry on Saturday. Medford, Grants Pass and Klamath Falls will be among the metro entrants while Crater and Ashland will be contenders in Class A. St. Mary's Coach Bill Mc Kibbin will take a combine of some 17 athletes to Eugene. For Phoenix Coach Hap Cons bruck lists a roster of some 26 athletes. Eagle Point Coach Vern Steward will enter eight. SPORTS Tornado JV Tops Eagles Jim Allen clouted a grand slam home run and Pitcher Jack Forde tripled with the bases filled yesterday when the Medford high junior var sity downed the Eagle Point high baseball varsity 18 to 1 in a scrape at Eagle Point. Ron Edmonds clubbed a one-run triple and the Med fords had the help of 12 bases on balls and two hit batters in amassing their score. Medford got eight of its runs in the first inning on one of the triples, a single by Larry Vowell, six walks and an error. Five-Hitter The Eagle run was in the first inning on an error, sto len base and single by Don Charley. Forde, chucking a five-hit game, walked five and whiffed three. Five Eagles saw pitching duty. They al lowed six hits and struck out three. Eagle Point has a Rogue league game with Rogue Ri ver at EP on Friday after noon. Medford jayvee plays at Klamath Falls on Saturday. Coach Points To Value Of Having Some Normal People Attend Colleges Students should be picked for college on bases other than just academic and IQ alone, Paul Durham asserted yesterday in a talk to Med ford Kiwanis club. The Linfield' college foot ball coach and athletic direct or, mentioning that colleges in the United States are now on the "academic kick," main tained that there is value in having some normal people in college rather than all "egg heads." Durham complimented the Medford school system and administration for an overall education program manned by top people. "I don't think there is a better situation in the state for an integrated program," he remarked. He pointed out that there are people at the top who care. "Giving up something and giving something extra" is what it takes to become a top athlete, Durham maintained. There are better athletes now than there have been in the past because they are bet ter coached, because they and coaches are more dedicated and because there is more dedication on the part of par ents. Durham mentioned Don Schollander, 15-year-old swim mer, and Dyrol Burleson, the nation's premier miler, as ex amples of parent dedication. Schollander recently became the first person to swim 220 yards in less than two min utes. "The kids that we have to go out after we can't get," he re marked. He said that Linfield writes many letters a year to ath letic prospects. Durham re ported that most of the boys Linfield gets are boys who have answered an invitation' to visit the camDus. "If thev we can't get them," he stated. The most Linfield can give a boy is three-fourths of his tuition, the coach said. He expressed the thought 'that it is something of value if a boy is not given his way through college and he has to work part of his way.
