Some citizens also doubt the United States realizes how dif ferent the land reform prob lem is in Chile as opposed to otner Latin American countries. They argue that there are many manifundia, or small farms, versus, latifundia,. or large farms in Chile than in most of the other countries. This means that the govern ment must find a great deal more lana for many more small farmers. And unlike Brazil or Argentina, the gov ernment has run out of land to give away. Must Bur Farms The government must now buy the large farms from the rich landowners. This is go ing to be very expensive Chileans estimate the cost at $330 million. Moreover, the upper classes are demanding considerable security, interest and payment in 10 year lapses, before they will allow the land to be expropriated. Many Chileans are bitter because they believe the United States is attempting to lead them without under standing any of these situations. There are also fears that the Alliance for Progress will, in the long run, help the Socialists and the Com munists who favor these re forms.
