MEDFOHD MAIL TRIBUNE. MEDFORD. OREGON THURSDAY, MAY 11. 1961 A 5 In the Day's News By FRANK JENKINS ?. As the sightseeing bus 'passes through the City of "London-which Is the financial .and big business part of' this great metropolis the lecturer points out a huge building on 2rour. right. "This," he ex plains, "is the world's most valuable acre of ground." - How much is it worth? , ' Its value, he goes on, is TEN MILLION POUNDS. The present value of the English pound is about $2.80. For pur poses of easy comparison the -value of the pound is ordi narily considered to be about three dollars. 'V, So ; The value of this acre of ground (which doesn't include the value of the building standing on it) is 30 MILLION DOLLARS! " With, say, a quarter section of such land in one's possess ion one ought to be able to pay taxes, even in this day sot fantastic taxation, and still 'keep the wolf from the door. .rriHAT brings up the story of land ownership in Eng land which is a very, very Jong story, indeed. Speaking in broad and gen eral terms, the land here all' belonged in the dim begin nings of history to the Saxon kings, who parceled it out to their retainers. Then came the ifateful day when William. the .Conqueror crossed over the -Channel and in the battle of Hastings took the land away from Harold- the Saxon and promptly proceeded to parcel it out to his Norman retain ., ers. ... .. A RATHER considerable part of the land of Eng land is still in the hands of 'these descendants of the fol--lowers of the Norman duke. SHU' speaking in broad and 'general terms and allowing for the normal exceptions, -these great families rent the 'land to others, who erect 'puildings-both dwellings and business structures-to others .yho occupy them and pay ,rent for their use. In the . English economic "structure, ground rent is a j'very, very important item Indeed.' 'THAT brings up the subject of house rent which, all 6ver the world is a basic item ; in the cost of living. How J ttiuch does it cost 'to rent liv ing quarters here? '' It all depends, of course, on jthe KIND of quarters. We nhave some friends who live in. a four-room apartment on " Berkeley Square (pronounced, incidentally, B A R K L E Y Square.) It is a very nice neighborhood, adjacent to the American Embassy and only a few blocks from Park Lane, which borders Hyde Park. ' For this apartment they ;;pay $7,500 a year. ; "TT ISN'T a posh neighbor hood, but it is a good one. " The building is old, of course, 'as nearly all of London's buildings are. The apartment -is comfortable but by no " means luxurious. So let's drop little farther, down the liv ing scale. . . " In an interesting article on w housing in London, the Times s tells of a van driver who lives . with his wife and seven chil ' dren in a three-room flat in a strictly working class area. It is old. The walls and ceil ings are stained and cracked l.and there are many leaks. , .For these quarters they pay six pounds, five shillings (roughly . $20) a week-or ap " proximately $85 a month. STILL speaking in broad and very general terms, one would say that living costs in London are about the . same as in the Unid States. " Prices of basic items in the '. food store windows appear to r.te about the same. '" !;-. Clothing appears to cost " about the same. Here in the '-home of Scotch whisky, the . average price of a highball is , about -70 cents. From the . tourist , standpoint, hotel vrooms are about the same price, quality considered, as " in the U.S.A. Tunisia President ; To Receive Parade New York - HOT - Tunisian i President Habib Bourguiba will receive today New York's ''traditional welcome." , Countless pounds of paper from torn-up telephone direc . tories will shower down from . Broadway skyscrapers on the presidential motorcade. It will pas through the "ticker-tape r parade canyon" from Bowling Green, at the southern tip of Manhattan, to the city hall. . From the windows and In i the streets, thousands were ex pected to mass behind police lines to shout their pleasure at seeing Bourguiba in New . York. Newspapers, radio and ' television networks have glv en prominent space to Bour guiba's visit hailing him as a great statesman and a good friend of the United States.
