The two birds had come first to the seawell at the . same time. When , the lady went outdoors, ' there they approached them with cau tion, expecting them to hurl . themselves into the air and fly away over the water. But they didn't. In fact they bare ly moved as the lady came within a foot of them. She talked in a low voice. . They cocked their heads as If interested in what she was saying. That began the friend ship between the lady, the gull and the heron-a friend ship that is now in its fourth year.- . ' The gull and the heron doze, side by side, even touch ing one another, on the sea wall hour after hour. When the lady leaves the house and calls to them, they stretch their wings and legs, straight en up and walk to where she ; la standing. For the entire tltviA ihm lflriv animHr. In tier yard, her two strange corn cantons follow her like a nair of docile dogs, always Just few feet behind. Watch With Interest If she reaches down to pull weed or straighten a plant, they watch with interest, and always ready to follow when she moves her position. Even more peculiar , than the bond of friendship that exists between the two birds, is their willingness to obey "the lady. She calls quietly. If they are out fishing some where, she may call three or more times, but within min utes they hear and they come, winging hurriedly In to rest on the seawall, or even on the foot of the chaise lounge. '- Eagerly they accept food from her hand. She pur chases small fish from bait peddlers or from small boys who come frequently to see these tame, wild things, do mesticated by a lady's charm With utmost care the two birds take the fish from her fingers, always being careful not to grab too quickly or injure the hand that feeds them. s Local Musicians Attend Conference Three Medford - Musicians union members represented the local union at the North west .Conference of Musicians in Coos Bay last week. Administration To Ask Funds for Educational TV Washington - (UN) - The ad ministration will soon ask Congress to put up money for promotion of educational tele vision on a nationwide scale; Secretary Abraham Rlblcoft said today. The secretary of health, education and welfare (HEW) outlined plans for giving edu cational TV a shot in the arm in a speech prepared for de livery to the National Associ ation of Broadcasters (NAB). . Riblcoff said educational -television has "exciting possi bilities" as an adjunct to classroom instruction. It could also "focus sustained national attention on our music, our arts, our literature and drama." Increase Public Service Echoing Newton M 1 n o w, chairman of the Federal Com munications Commission (FCC) who addressed the NAB convention Tues day, Riblcoff also urged commer cial TV stations to increase their public service program ming. ; The administration has "conscientiously r e viewed', the possibilities of education al TV, Riblcoff said, and will present a program to Con gress on May 17. "We believe that federal funds should be available on a matching basis,'' he said, "to enable states and localities to further the use our nation has thus far made of television' in its educational processes." , Funds for Equipment These funds to go help in the planning of educational TV and in purchasing equip ment, he said. Riblcoff said his depart ment would also accelerate its present work in the educa tional TV field. Although a small gain in output Is expected In 1961 over 1960, it probably will provide consumers with about a pound less meat per person this year because of popula tion growth, the department said in its publication, "The Livestock and Meat Situs-tion." Meat production - this win ter was 2 per cent below year earlier, due primarily to lower pork output. Prices Hold Steady Meat animal prices have) held steady this year in con trast to an advence early last year. In, early spring, prices of most classes of cattle, calves and lambs were below a year earlier, but hog prices were above last spring. For 1961, cattle and hog prices probably will show un usual stability with cattle prices averaging close to last year- Hog prices will be be low prices a year .earlier this fall but the year's average likely will be above 1960 prices. Sheep and lamb prices probably will average lower ' than a year before. The department said cash receipts received by farmers from the sale of meat animals in 1960 totaled $10.6 billion, 3 per cent less than in 1999. Marketings of cattle and calves and sheep and lambs were larger than in 1959. Valley Man Takes Part in Recovery . Two valley Navy men were among those participating in the recent recovery operations for NaVy Cmdr. Alan Shep ard, the first U.S. astronaut. Serving aboard the aircraft carrier USS Lake Champlain were Ceroid O. Barnes, per sonnelman 1c, son of Mr. and Mrs. Jesse F. Barnes, route 1. Talent, and Claude E. New man, aviation structural me chanic 3c, son of JAt. and Mrs. Ralph Newman, 102 Elk St. The Navy recovery force, composed of both surface and air units, was deployed down the flight path from Cap. Canaveral prepared to recov er the spacecraft wherever it landed. Actual recovery was made by a Marine helicopter which Ufted Commander Shepard out of the water in less than five minutes and transported him to the deck of the carrier, flagship of the downrange re covery force.
