MEDFORD MAIL TRIBUNE, MAY, 3, 1961 Lar$e Tent To House ' Various Activities A large tent has been set up near the Medford Armory to house carnival booths during the Crater Lions Sportsfair and Home and Garden show. The fourth annual event will be held May 5, 6, and 7, i According to Dick Hawkins, general chairman, the booths will include such games as ring around coins, penny toss, dart games and a human dunk tank. Rides will also be avail able for both children and adults, Hawkins said. LONG WEAR Douglas fir 2x4s used as patio decking will have al most an unlimited life when treated with wood preservatives. New Bark Mulch Aid of Gardners In Rogue Valley A new aid to gardeners, de veloped in recent years, in Jackson county Is a bark mulch which can be obtained 'from Kogap Lumber company or Timber Products. ' Either ammonium sulphate or ammonium nitrate should be worked into the soil with this material to replace the nitrogen taken from the ground as the organic material becomes decomposed. Home owners planning to plant lawns this spring - can either work the mulch into . the ground or lay it over the grass seed on the surface. , Worked Into Soil When using bark mulch with heavy soil it can be - worked In three inches deep after the soil has been tilled six inches deep. Fertilizer should be mixed in before the seed is applied. When laying the bark on top of the soil, approximately five pounds of ammonium nitrate should be applied per 1,000 square feet. The bark also helps with weed control this time of year since this is the time the weeds are starting to appear. Bark ' should not be put over seeded flower beds since it will suppress the flower ,seeds the same as it does the weeds. It is best to wait until the flower seeds are two to three inches high before ap plying the mulch, garden ex perts recommend. 'G Good Reports Those selling the bark mulch have received good re ports from vegetable garden ers. It loosens the soil and retains the moisture. It also allows the water and air to get into the soil. Medium or coarser grades are recom mended. Gardeners bothered with hard pan problems can use the fine grade. This should be applied not more than one-fourth Inch deep to hold the moisture in the soil. Those using the bark mulch have found it cuts down on the amount of time' culti vating the soil later. Surveyor Recreation Site Being Prepared - A new major construction project in the bureau of land ' management's Medford dis trict is called the Surveyor Recreation Site. Construction of the site will be undertaken this sum mer to provide public recrea tion facilities adjacent to the Keno federal timber access road which now is under con struction in Klamath and Jackson counties. Hiking Is Popular Hiking is a popular outdoor summer activity, and provides a great deal of enjoyment for the camera man and nature lover. But It can be tiresome on the feet unless the hiker has a good pair of hiking boots, or it can be burdensome if the hiker's pack isn't comfort able. . ' Good hiking boots may be obtained from local shoe and sporting goods stores, and it is important to purchase a pair which is comfortable for hours of enjoyable hiking. Sporting goods stores can also provide packs which are comfort able to individual needs.
