TRIBUNE, MAY 3, 1961 Abundant Supply of Camp Sites Available camping is becoming a more popular activity for week ends and vacations, and southern Oregon and northern California provide area resi dents with an abundant sup ply of locations and facilities. From the coast to the top of the Cascades, and beyond, camp areas and picnic facili ties are being improved and developed by county, state and federal agencies to meet the increased demand for va cationists and outdoor en . thusiasts. State parks, some of them with camping facilities, others with just picnic facilities, are located along the coast, state and federal highways and along rivers in both Oregon and California. ' . Along the coast, perhaps the most popular park is Har ris Beach State park, where there are overnight camping facilities throughout the year, picnic facilities, and several miles of beach for hikers, surf fishing, and for a few daring swimmers. Recently Developed Another camp site which recently was developed in the immediate area is Laurelhurst off Crater Lake highway 40 miles northeast of . Medford. Overnight camping at Laurel hurst will open May 24. There are many state parks where overnight camping is not permitted, and among the more popular ones are Tou Velle State park along the Rogue river a few miles . northeast of Medford, and Casey State park on Highway 62. The greatest number of camp sites available, how ever, are- within federal juris diction areas the national forests, land administered by the bureau of land manage ment, and the national park service. . There are 46 camping and picnic areas in Rogue River National forest. Some of them are in areas where there are no roads for- those who like to hike (and carry packs). Tables, stoves and toilets" are located at the majority of sites. There are now eight picnic and camping sites on land ad ministered by the bureau of land management in southern Oregon. Another campsite, and the largest In the BLM district, is expected to be open in early June. Russian Creek, Kelsey Can yon .and Tucker Flat sites are located on the Rogue river trail in Josephine county; Battle Creek, Salt Creek and Elderberry Flat sites are on the West Fork Evans Creek federal timber access road. Cold Spring is east on Mt. Bolivar on the Kelsey-Mule creek federal timber access road. I DEPUTY AND BOAT This is the boat which the sheriff's boat patrol uses on Jack son county waters to enforce the state boat ing regulations which became effective last year. Posing beside the boat and trailer in the courthouse parking lot is Sgt. Veryl Vanoose, in charge of the patrol.
