APRIL 30, '1961 Much .BWIPrpw Tina Viaan made in providing education al and cultural activities or "senior citizens in this area since the founding of the Rogue Valley Council on Ag ing three years ago. A report on activities fos tered by the council was given by out-going President Frank; Glonning at a recent meeting' in the Senior Activ ity center. Approximately 600 senior citizens of Jackson county have, benefitted from the two Fifty-Plus Social clubs, the Senior Activity center, and the Friendly Visitors service which have been supported by the council. Varied Daily Program : The Activity center has carried on a varied daily pro gram for able-bodied seniors, and the visitor service was organized with the help of over 50 volunteers, who were trained to visit- and - bring lis? - INSTALLED - Carlos Sand er, 3606 Bursell rd., Central Point, (above) was installed governor of the Medford Moose lodge last night. BIG Y ' APPLIANCE CENTER recreation and friendliness to nursing homes and other homes for the aged. All three projects . have steadily increased, the coun cil was told. Initial work of the group brought member ship in the United Medford crusade, as well as assistance from the Medford parks and recreation commission, which provides and maintains the center at 601 East Jackson st. - , . ' Advancing to other needs of older persons, council com mittees, on housing, health and employment have worked on long-range programs to obtain adequate low-cost housing for low-income seniors; to pro mote better health care and rehabilitation in nursing homes and other homes for the aged; to combat prejudice of employers toward hiring workers over 40 years of age; and to work against too early retirement. Continuous publicity and public education through co operation of the press, radio and television has been car ried on by the council to make the community conscious of the needs of older citizens, who total 10 per cent of Jack son county's population. The most extensive under taking was the Southern Ore gon District Conference on Aging in Medford in Novem ber, 1959. It was one of four sponsored by the Oregon State Council on Aging in preparation for the state con ference held in April, 1960, and the White House confer ence in January, 1961. The Rogue Valley council was the first In Oregon out side Portland to be organized under sponsorship of the State Commission on Aging. Glon ning urged continued efforts by the council to bring the needs of senior citizens be fore the community, and to bring increasing opportunities to senior citizens. He praised council mem bers and committee chairmen for the progress made in a "pioneer movement." He de scribed the council s purpose as "to study the problems and desires of our older citizens and to promote, sponsor or initiate action to meet the needs we find." Speakers Named for Mission Speaking Four men will be available to valley organizations to speak about the proposed Medford Gospel Mission to be constructed on North Front st. The four will attend the Monday noon meeting of the Medford Chamber of Com merce Roundtable at the Jack son hotel. They include Glenn McCullough, Dr. D. Kirkland West, Chief of Police Charles P. Champlin, and CI a r e n c e Wilson". Organizations wishing to arrange for one of the men to speak before their group may contact McCullough at SPring 3-7441. Earlier this month, the ex ecutive board of the mission voted to exercise its option on the North Front st. prop erty across from the Med ford fire station. The site is 75 by 150 feet and' cost $10, 000, of which $4,000 is needed for the down payment. ABOARD CARRIER George E.
