recreation and friendliness to
nursing homes and other
homes for the aged.
All three projects . have
steadily increased, the coun
cil was told. Initial work of
the group brought member
ship in the United Medford
crusade, as well as assistance
from the Medford parks and
recreation commission, which
provides and maintains the
center at 601 East Jackson
st. - , . '
Advancing to other needs
of older persons, council com
mittees, on housing, health and
employment have worked on
long-range programs to obtain
adequate low-cost housing for
low-income seniors; to pro
mote better health care and
rehabilitation in nursing
homes and other homes for
the aged; to combat prejudice
of employers toward hiring
workers over 40 years of age;
and to work against too early
retirement.
Continuous publicity and
public education through co
operation of the press, radio
and television has been car
ried on by the council to make
the community conscious of
the needs of older citizens,
who total 10 per cent of Jack
son county's population.
The most extensive under
taking was the Southern Ore
gon District Conference on
Aging in Medford in Novem
ber, 1959. It was one of four
sponsored by the Oregon
State Council on Aging in
preparation for the state con
ference held in April, 1960,
and the White House confer
ence in January, 1961.
The Rogue Valley council
was the first In Oregon out
side Portland to be organized
under sponsorship of the State
Commission on Aging. Glon
ning urged continued efforts
by the council to bring the
needs of senior citizens be
fore the community, and to
bring increasing opportunities
to senior citizens.
He praised council mem
bers and committee chairmen
for the progress made in a
"pioneer movement." He de
scribed the council s purpose
as "to study the problems and
desires of our older citizens
and to promote, sponsor or
initiate action to meet the
needs we find."
