Lonnie Q. - He talks too much and embarrasses me with my friends. Mr. E. O. - I'm fascinated by people and eager to know them better. 1 i Lonnie Q. - My dad is one of those talkative, effusive gents who'll bend anybody's ear who lets him. Give him an audience, even an alert little puppy, and he's off on a con versational jag even it it's one-way. : All through my adolescence and college years, I used to squirm as he held my friends captive audience, and made them laugh out of politeness at his crummy jokes. But now that I'm an adult, married and a father myself, I don't want him trying the same thing with all my neighbors when he drives out to visit us. I was mortified last Sunday when he accompanied us on a stroll with the kids, and held us up for 20 minutes while he described his whole World War I experience to a man who I, myself, never say more than hello to. Mr. E. Q.-I'm sorry Lonnie thinks I talk too much. But just because it rubs him the wrong way is no proof it an noys others. I think most peo- p'a enjoy a friendly approach and a chance to shoot the breeze. It just happens' that people fascinate me. I love to hear their yarns, even the fish stories. I guess I'm like Mr. Mitty in the James Thurber stories. I Identify with whom ever I'm listening to anyone from the winner of a pie eat ing contest to the youngster who failed Latin. But in order to get people to open up, I have to tell them something about myself, act like a "reg ular guy." It's no act, though. I m sincerely interested in the next fellow. Breakfast When I say anything more than How do you do, however, Lonnie blows a gasket. I think he's intolerant, and act ing like a stuffed shirt. Tho Councilt Lonnie sounds like a most insecure person, to be so worried over the effect his father's jabber has on his friends. Let him bear in mind that there's al ways a chance the button holed listener is really en joying the colloquy, and awaiting his turn to chime in. And, if not, most people have worked out defenses for get ting unbuttonholed. Lonnie should relax. The only possible justifica tion we can envision for Lon- nle's uneasiness In the pres. ence of his babbling dad, is that Mr. Q. may not be sens! tive enough to distinguish be tween real interest and mere politeness. So, we place that essential on Mr. Q. s conver sational check-list, plus one other: Remember that you come and go, among Lonnie's circle of friends, but that these are the people he lives near, sees every day. There are some things he may not want them to know about his family, Also, there are things some of them may try to "worm" out of you, since he won't tell thetri. Therefore, the second tongue-tripper: Be discreet, In other words, we must assume that in Mr. Q.'s tor rent of talk there is no "lap sus linguae" to affect Lonnie's privacy. Unlike his trusting. outgoing father, Lonnie is the cautious type, But, just so, Lonnie must accept his father as a .type. a package deal with both en dearing and, perhaps, annoy ing traits. We suggest that Lonnie start looking at his father with fresh eyes, unclouded with the childish resentments which keep him trying to "tame" the ebullient extro vert. Why be "mortified?" Why stick pins in this bouncy Mr. Cheer-up? This son might be surprised to learn how many of his friends, if he asked them, would holler "Morel" instead of "Nuff!"
