APRIL 21. 1961 Student To Speak Sunday At First Christian Church Sunday is observed as Northwest Christian College Day by Christian Churches throughout the northwestern states. On that day representatives from the college which is lo cated in Eugene, visit the churches, giving the worship message and telling of the work of the college. Wendell Wagler, a senior student at the college, will preach at both services at the local church. His subject will be "Gospel Necessities." , The youth choir, at the first service, will sing "O Lord of Life." The chancel choir will sing "The King of Love My Shepherd is" and Mrs. Walker Larsen will sing "After" at the second service. Mrs. Herbert Carson and Mrs. Floyd Putman will be hostesses for the coffee hour. Sarah Matthews and Sharon Tucker will be study and wor ship leaders for the Chi Rho Fellowship at 6:15 p.m. Bon Gandee will lead the Chris tian Youth Fellowship meet ing at 6:30 p.m. on the- subject "When Your Life is Upset." Theme Announced For Foursquare "Anchored In Faithfulness program," is scheduled for the Foursquare- church, 2200 Roberta rd., to begin Sunday and continue for, six consecu tive. Sundays.' S, Nixon, congregation overseer at the local Kingdom hall of Jehovah's Witnesses, has announced that the semi annual circuit convention of Jehovah's Witnesses will be held In Yreka, Calif., May 19 to 21. He said that members from over 17 congregations In southern Oregon and northern California will attend. . "The assembly is planned to assist each member of the con gregation to develop and en large his Bible understand ing and teaching abilities," Mr. Nixon said, "and the local congregation Is making prep arations, not only to attend, but to participate in the var ious activities connected with the Christian gathering." Local meetings scheduled for this week will continue to stress the theme - for April which is "Ordained Ministers Let Light Shine." The public talk "What Hope for the Liv ing and the Dead?" will be given at 4 p.m. Sunday by E. Odear of the local congre gation. Prayers To Be Offered for Crusade Prayers for the success of the 1961 Cancer Crusade will be offered in Jackson county churches this week end, ac cording to the Rev., W. E. Martin, American Cancer So ciety representative of the Medford Ministerial associa tion., , Prayers for the success of the 1961 Cancer Crusade will be offered by worshippers of all faiths during April, Can cer Control Month. "Everyone, regardless o f color or creed, hopes for the day when cancer will be elim inated as a threat to human life," Mr. Martin said. "We live In the faith that we may see in our lifetime a world free of a cruel disease which indiscriminately at tacks men, women and chil dren. Prayer gives us the courage and determination to persist in this faith, Let each of us. In his own way, add the strength of his prayers to the great crusade of saving lives." TRIBUNE. The services are- especially for the benefit of those who are unable to attend the regu lar camp meeting held during July each, year at Gladstone Park near Portland. Church officials from the Oregon Conference and North Pacific Union Conference of fices in Portland will occupy the pulpits of the valley churches during the 11 a.m, services Saturday. Meetings Set At Friends Next Week The Rev. and Mrs. John Retherford, Wabash, Ind., are evangelist and music director for a series of meetings being held currently at the Friends church. Services are held at 7:30 p.m. each week day ex cept Saturday, and at 11 a.m. and 7:30 p.m. Sundays, closing April 30. ' The Retherfords have had 22 years of ministry with the Friends church and have done extensive - evangelistic work, especially in the midwest. For four years they served as mis sionaries in Kenya Colony, Africa, during the Mau Mau terrorism, where Mr. Rether ford was superintendent of the 600 African . Friends churches. He also spent some time in the ' West Indies in evangelistic work. The Reth erfords are parents-in-law of Dan Nolta, assistant pastor of the local church. . Dedication Service The new sanctuary,' dedir cated Sunday, will be used for the services. Approximately 225 attended the dedication service, 1 n eluding visitors from many local churches as well as from Friends churches of the Eugene, Salem and Portland areas. Open house was held following the serv ice, at which time visitors were, invited to inspect the new fellowship hall, class rooms, and the entire church plant. Refreshments were served In the foyer. Finishing touches are being applied to the interior of the sanctuary this week. . Jacksonville Church To Hear Missionary Jacksonvllle-The Rev. Rich ard L. Johnston, missionary to Korea, will speak at the Assembly of God church, Jack sonville, Sunday at the 11 a.m. service. Mr. Johnston has served as a missionary for a number of years. During his last term he devoted most of his time in the Bible college in Korea. ' Pastor W. Elwood Irby will speak on the subject "The Day of the Lord" Sunday at the 7:30 p.m. service. Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. Mrs. Donald Hayes will con duct a joint youth and adult service. Sermons Told for Central Point Group Central Point-Mr. Jean M. Shelley of Church of Christ, Third and Oak sts., Central Point, will speak Sunday at the 10:45 a.m. worship serv ice on "The Way of Promised Provision." The sermon will deal with God's promises to man, the theme on which he will speak at the Gospel Festival next week at Puget Sound College of the Bible, Seattle. Mr. and Mrs. Shelley and four young people from the church will attend the meeting. Sunday at 7:30 p.m. the subject will be "Wives, If You Had the Chance to Begin Marriage over Again, What Mistakes Would You Like to Avoid?" High Mass To Honor Hospital's Anniversary A solemn high mass of thanksgiving, to be offered at 9:30 a.m. tomorrow In Sacred Heart church., will commem orate the 50th anniversary of the founding of Sacred Heart hospital here by the Sisters of Charity of Providence. Sister 'Luke of the Savior, administrator of the hospital, has extended an invitation to their many friends in the val ley to join the Sisters and hospital staff in this anniver sary observance. The Very Rev. Carl Mai, pastor of Sacred Heart church, will serve as celebrant of the mass. The Rev. William Mc Leod and, the Rev. John Ilg., parish assistants, will be dea con and sub-deacon, respec tively. Altar boys will be from St. Mary's school. St Mary's Marian choir will sing the Roger Wagner mass in honor of St. Francis, directed by Sister Miriam Joseph and accompanied by Antonia Adams at the organ. Further observance of the golden anniversary will take place on Sunday, May 7, when the ladles of Provi dence Guild, the hospital aux iliary, will sponsor an after noon silver tea for the public at the hospital. Nazarenes Plan Sermon Series "According to My Gospel" is the general heading of a series of messages on the Epistle to the Romans now being given by the Rev. Har old M. Message topics which have been cov ered thus far are "Paul - a Servant of Christ", and "Debt ors." Message topic for Sun day ' morning will be "The Universality of Sin." John Bodenstab, president of the Men's Fellowship of the church, announced that their next meeting will be held Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. This is a dinner gathering held in the church activity building. Confirmation Set At St. Mark's A mixed class of some 25 adults and young people will be presented for confirmation Sunday at 11 a.m. when the Right Rev. Frank Archibald Rhea, D.D., retired bishop of the missionary district of Ida ho, visits St. Mark's to ad minister the ancient rite oi the Laying on of Hands. The class has been under preparation for some months by the Rev. George R. V. Bolster, and the Rev. Theo dore J. Ehrllch, and will be the guests of St. Mark's Altar GuUd at a reception in their honor following the confirma tion' service. ' Each candidate will wear a red carnation, presented by the church vestry. A corpora'a service will be arranged in the near future when the new confirmees will receive their . first communion and their con firmation ceritficates. Bishop Rhea, who is assist ing the Rt. Rev.
