"Seek the Lord while he may be found, call
upon him while he it near; let the wicked forsake
his way and the unrighteous man his thoughts;
let him return to the Lord, that he may have
mercy on him, and to our God, for he will
abundantly pardon.'' Isaiah 55:6-7.

Utility District
Measure Recalled
Salem - (UPO - The House
Committee on Planning and
Development decided Thurs
day to recall from the floor
a Senate-approved bill to give
the public utility commisioner
new powers in determining
what territories utilities may
serve.
SB487 was voted out "do
pass" Tuesday. Public power
spokesmen say the bill is de
signed to curb people's utility
districts and let private power
take over. ,
The bill squeaked out of
committee 4-3. Rep. Ross Mor
gan, one of those who voted
for it, moved to return it to
committee for more study.
The Gresham Democrat said
he would like to see the emer
gency clause removed because
there doesn't appear to be any
emergency involved. .....

of those talkative, effusive
gents who'll bend anybody's
ear who lets him. Give him an
audience, even an alert little
puppy, and he's off on a con
versational jag even it it's
one-way. :
All through my adolescence
and college years, I used to
squirm as he held my friends
captive audience, and made
them laugh out of politeness
at his crummy jokes. But now
that I'm an adult, married and
a father myself, I don't want
him trying the same thing
with all my neighbors when
he drives out to visit us.
I was mortified last Sunday
when he accompanied us on
a stroll with the kids, and
held us up for 20 minutes
while he described his whole

man who I, myself, never say
more than hello to.
Mr. E. Q.-I'm sorry Lonnie
thinks I talk too much. But
just because it rubs him the
wrong way is no proof it an
noys others. I think most peo-
p'a enjoy a friendly approach
and a chance to shoot the
breeze.
It just happens' that people
fascinate me. I love to hear
their yarns, even the fish
stories. I guess I'm like Mr.
Mitty in the James Thurber
stories. I Identify with whom
ever I'm listening to anyone
from the winner of a pie eat
ing contest to the youngster
who failed Latin. But in order
to get people to open up, I
have to tell them something
about myself, act like a "reg
ular guy." It's no act, though.
I m sincerely interested in the
next fellow.

Tho Councilt Lonnie
sounds like a most insecure
person, to be so worried over
the effect his father's jabber
has on his friends. Let him
bear in mind that there's al
ways a chance the button
holed listener is really en
joying the colloquy, and
awaiting his turn to chime in.
And, if not, most people have
worked out defenses for get

should relax.
The only possible justifica
tion we can envision for Lon-
nle's uneasiness In the pres.
ence of his babbling dad, is
that Mr. Q. may not be sens!
tive enough to distinguish be
tween real interest and mere
politeness. So, we place that
essential on Mr. Q. s conver
sational check-list, plus one
other:
Remember that you come
and go, among Lonnie's circle
of friends, but that these are
the people he lives near, sees
every day. There are some
things he may not want them
to know about his family,
Also, there are things some
of them may try to "worm"
out of you, since he won't tell
thetri. Therefore, the second
tongue-tripper: Be discreet,
In other words, we must
assume that in Mr. Q.'s tor
rent of talk there is no "lap
sus linguae" to affect Lonnie's
privacy. Unlike his trusting.

We suggest that Lonnie
