With these changes, she has become oft en unreasonable and difficult, and perhaps at times a bit con fused so that she is not able to recognize a child or a grandchild, v For instance; here is a let ter from a woman who says that several times in the last few years she has had to take her mother to a hospital where the doctor thought she might have had a heart attack. Today, as he looks back and sees that she now hag no heart symptoms, but has decided changes in character, he sees that she probably had some of the little strokes that I have for years been describ ing. The expenses of the sev eral hospitalizations ate up practically all the savings of the two daughters and the two sons. - . My correspondent says that her mother apparently inher ited a tendency to be difficult because she has always been cranky and quick-tempered' like her father and her broth er. Poor heredity is suggested also by the fact that the moth er's brotner was so queer xnac he wound up in the State Hos pital. The mother Is now so hard to handle that, after a few hours with her, one of 1:30 House Party 3:00 The Millionaire 3:30 Verdict la Voure 3:00 Brighter Day , 3:10 Secret Storm 3:30 Edge ol Night- 4:00 Bargain Shopper 4:15 TV Question Box , 4:30 Uncle Bill 8:30 Huckleberry Hound , . 6:00 Your TV Weatherman 6:03 Channel 6 Report 6:15 Dous Edwards St The News 6:30 The Callfornlana 7:00 Sea Hunt 7:30 Rawhide : r, 8:30 Route 68 . , ' ' . 0:30 Way Out 10:00 Twilight Zone . 10:30 Final Report 10:45 "My Lucky Star" KOTI-TV (Channel 2) THURSDAY 4:00 American Bandstand 800 Uncle Bill 8:30 Rov Ronera 1 6:00 six O'clock Report otto t v woatnerman 6:15 Doug Edwards Si News 6 :30- Award Theater 7:00 Man Hunt 7:30 Andy Griffith 8:00 Blue Angels . - 8:30 The Real McCoys i 8:00-My Three Sons 9fli' Hot Ott the Wire 10:00 Jack Benny 10:30 SUenta Please 11:00 Rawhide 12:00 Sign Oil : FRIDAY 11:00 Morning Court 11:30 love That Bob 12:00 The Camouflage 13:30 As The World Tumi : 1:00 About Facea 1:24 News 1 :30 House Party 200 Day In Court j 3:30 Seven Keys 3:00 Brighter Dea 3:15 Secret Storm 3:30 Edge at Night 4O0 American Bandstand . (Register and Tribune Syndicate, 1961) her daughters is a nervous wreck. The daughters try very hard to be kind, - but soon their patience is exhausted. The old mother will keep pick ing on her daughters' boys un til they get irritable and nerv ous and take refuge out in the street. Two Things Seen The daughters have been taking their mother to a psy chiatrist, but they have come to see two things: one, that they could not afford this, and the second; that even such an expert could not be expected to. make her over into an easy-to-llve-wlth person which she never was. Natural ly, the daughters keep hoping that the mother will change, but when they think a bit, they realize that with advanc ing age, the only thing she is likely to do is to get worse. The daughters are now at their wits' ends, worrying about the problem. It does not help any that each husband has now put his foot down, and . has said that he will no longer take the old lady into his house. He does not want his wife and his boys all up set again, and he does not want his mother-in-law giving him a stiff lecture every time she catches him and his wife having a high-ball before din ner, or a game of bridge with old friends on Sunday eve ning., As the mother says, when she was a girl,, that was downright wicked, 'Also. Jthe, Bfits in Junior's hair by telling him to shut off that jazz on the radio. An other difficulty of late is that the mother has begun at times to be a bit confused and mix-ed-up. One day, after a lit tle stroke with much dizzi ness and a vomiting-spell, she ordered .her son out of the house; she thought he was a stranger who had come in un bidden, Also, the mother Is making trouble by hiding her money, and then not being able to find it. She does not trust her daughters with it. The daughters fixed up a lit tle apartment for the mother, but they feared to leave her there alone, so they arranged to have a woman come in ev ery afternoon and get her 'sup per. But the old lady prompt ly fires any such woman they get for her. Now the daugh ters are thinking- of putting the mother in an Old Ladles' Home, but they are afraid that the neighbors will crit icize them for this. Like a Stranger : The daughters say that they still love their mother who wasi but that this woman who now looks like their old moth er is so changed she is like a stranger. They don't know what to do. They have thought of putting the old-lady in a private mental hospital but, first, she refuses to go, and second, the expense would TELEVISION REPAIR Radio & Small Appliances Work Guaranteed CALL SP 3-6241 TROWBRIDGE & FLYNN 214 West Main Phone SP 3-3102 leave the family broke with-1 in a iew monins. Often when good people like these daughters beg me for help with a confused, men tally changed, and impossible old parent, I feel that one thing is certain; the old per son should not be taken into the home where she will quickly disrupt the Jives of her grandchildren; they must not be driven out into the street. Often, the only place I know of for the care of an old parent with a senescent psychosis is in a State Hos pital. I know how terribly hard or almost impossible it for good people to insist that their parent go to such a place-but I have watched the disintegration of many a home and the ruination of the health of many a daughter under the Impact of an "im possible" old mother or fath er, and I think it wrong for a daughter or son to insist that the spouse and the children take care of the old person. I wish that I knew of some ideal solution. Colitis Is a much misunder stood disease. To learn more about it. read Dr. Alvarez' booklet, VColitls."
