His father was killed there before his eyes. He is believed one of the few persons who saw the inside of the ' gas chambers and lived. ' . '. Dr. Benno Kohn, 88, was president of the German Zionist Organization when he first met Eichmann, in 1936. He met him again three years later when he and other Jew ish leaders were ordered to go to Eichmann's office to be told about the plans for emi gration of Jews from Berlin. "The third time was In an Israeli prison," Kohn said. "The man had, of course, grown older, but there Was no mistaking his eyes, his tea-turct-they , were unforget able." Jewish Leader Joel Brand, the Budapest Jewish leader whom Eich mann sent to the Middle East in 1944 to offer the lives of a million Jews in exchange for 10,000 trucks for the Nazi war machine. Hansi Brand, his wife, who recalls that incident with a shudder. "Eichmann coldly transfixed me with his eyes and said Indifferently, 'Your husband is going to Istanbul. You are remaining here as a hostage.' " Dr. Martin Paid!, Hungarian-born, whose wife and two children were murdered by the Nazis. He has today a postcard he was forced to send from the Auschwitz death camp to his lister, tell ing her not to worry. Leon Kapoh, of Salonika, Greece, who was in three con centration' campl and whis pers, so his wife and children will not hear: "Do you know that in Auschwitz they experi mented on living people who went mad with agony?" He Was the sole survivor of a family of 40 persons". . - Moshe Agami, a native of Latvia and early settler In Palestine, who in 1938 was sent to see Eichmann in Vi enna in an effort to win re lease of some Jews for agri cultural training in Palestine. "I shook with fear," he re called. Esther Luria, a Palestinian studying art in Belgium in 1939 who was caught in the Russian and then the Nazi occupation of Lithuania dur ing a visit to relatives there. She spent three years in the Kovno ghetto, painting Hi scenes and becoming kttoWn as the "Painter of the Ghetto." Loses Parents Dr. Paul D. Merz, 65, a Czech whose brother, wife and two children were mur dered by the Nazis.. He or ganized the emigration of Czech Jews to Palistine in 1939 and later was treasurer of the Jewish underground army, Hagana, In Palestine, until 1948. Abner Loess, who left Ber lin for Palestine in 1938 and never again saw his parents. An Israeli police officer, he hat been questioning Eich mann dally since his arrlvel In the country last May. Abraham Aviel, who watch ed his five brothers and sis ters murdered, joined the un derground at the age of 15 and witnessed a number of mass executions. Phillip Freudiger, who help ed thousands of Polish and Czech Jews hide from the Nazis In Budapest. Erichmann remembered him. Dr. Hugo Kratky and Max Burger were in the first ship ment of 1,000 Jewish men from Czechslovakia to a des tination from which few re turned. Erichmann was in charge of the shipment. Government Spending May Be $161 Billion New York - (UPI) - Total government spending - fed eral, state and local - may reach $161 billion in fiscal 1961, the Tax Foundation, Inc., 'estimates. It represents an average tax burden of $2,850 per family, $100 higher than the previous fiscal year. Junior College Election Slated Salem - (UPD - The state board of education has set May 1 as date for an election in four counties to let the people decide on whether to form a southwest Oregon area education district. Also at issue will be elec tion of a board of directors. The area Involves all of Coos county and parts of Cur ry, Josephine and Douglas counties. ,. ', A bOardman spokesman said suits against the proposed jun ior college level district were withdrawn to allow the elec tion to be held. At the same time the board authorized the superintendent of public instruction to set a date for a hearing on a re quest by Malheur county and the Huntington school district in Baker county to form a similar college district. Dr. Leon P. Minear, super intendent, will set the date later. The board approved the re quest of the Clatsop county Community college district at Astoria to Issue asso'ciate de grees in applied science. It is the third district to be so authorized. Pendleton and Sa lem were the first. Town Constructed on Imported Soil Base Thompson, Manitoba - (UPD -When International Nickel Co. started building its $185 million nickel mine in the sub Arctic tundra here, a town had to be laid out first. But there was no soil to build a town on, so thousands of tons- of soil had to be brought in over the frozen sloughl in winter by tractor train. Eichmann has been held since last May 25 Is a cat. Inside the fortress, three concentric rings of guards stand between the prisoner and the outside. Guards Carefully Selected Of the rings of guards, only the men in direct contact with Eichmann are not armed. One of the aims of the security is to give Eichmann no chance to commit suicide - and to take no chance that one of the guards might kill him. The men in contact with Eich mann not only carry no College Grads Save More Tradinq Stamps New York - (UPD - Trading stamps are saved by more col lege graduates than those with only an elementary school education, according to a sur vey made for the S. & H. None except nil personal guards and the police officials who question him can find the way through a maze of twist ing passages to Eichmann's 12 foot by 12 foot cell. And each of the narrow passages is blocked at intervals by barb ed wire reaching from floor to ceiling. The cell itself is high ceil inged and sparsely furnished with a bed, a table and two chairs. One chair is for Eich mann, the other for the guard who sits in the cell 24 hours a day. Constant Surveillance A second guard keeps Eich mann and the guard in the cell under constant surveil lance from outside the room, through a window in the metal door. The cell has that single barred window facing across a passage to a blank wall. The room is heated by an electric heater placed inside a barred recess in one of the walls. Main yesterday suspended im position of sentence for five years on Robert Murray Cran dall, 145 South Grape st., who was charged with uttering and publishing a forged check. Crandall -was ordered to make restitution on all bad checks. He had pleaded guilty pre viously to charges of issuing a bad check for $15 to an Ashland cafe. ' ' Imposition of sentence was suspended for three years on Ersala Mae Dykes, 212 South Seventh St., Central Point, who was charged with for gery. She was directed to make restitution through the state board of parole and proba tion. She had pleaded guilty previously to forging a pay roll check. Imposition of sentence was suspended for five years on Albert Jackson Kimbrell, 836 North Central ave., who was charged with larceny from a building. He was directed to make restitution. He had pleaded guilty previously to taking 100 pounds of meat from a warehouse. led from outside the Cell. A strong electric light bulb In the ceiling burns around the clock, but Is dimmed at 10 p.m. The light is completely out of reach, even to a tall man standing on the table. Eichmann shaves with a battery -run, plastic - covered shaver while a guard watches. It is taken from him as soon as he is finished. The frames of his eyeglasses also are of plastic. From Eichmann's cell there is access to another chamber, in which a third guard sets. This room opens into a third in which Eichmann washes his clothes and hangs them to dry over the faucet. Here, he also washes himself. There is a hot water . shower, and a toilet - with no door. At no time floes Eichmann have pri vacy. Given Exercise . Once each day Eichmann is taken out into an inner com pound of the fortress for half an hour's exercise. A chalk line marks a path along which he and his watchers must walk. For added security, two guards and Eichmann all are dressed exactly the same that if anyone should get 'ose enough to try to harm the prisoner, he wouldn't know which man was his target. It is forbidden for Eiclv -f mann's guards to talk to him. At first Eichmann tried to en. gage his guards in conversa tton, but gave up; Eichmann is served the same food as the prison's offi' cera.
