Yehuda Bakon, 31, a teach
er of art and promising paint

Israel, was a Czech boy of
14 when he was sent into the
gas chambers at Auschwitz to
strip the gold from the teeth
of the dead. His father was
killed there before his eyes.
He is believed one of the few
persons who saw the inside
of the ' gas chambers and
lived. ' .
'. Dr. Benno Kohn, 88, was
president of the German
Zionist Organization when he
first met Eichmann, in 1936.
He met him again three years
later when he and other Jew
ish leaders were ordered to
go to Eichmann's office to be
told about the plans for emi
gration of Jews from Berlin.
"The third time was In an
Israeli prison," Kohn said.
"The man had, of course,
grown older, but there Was no
mistaking his eyes, his tea-turct-they
, were unforget

Joel Brand, the Budapest
Jewish leader whom Eich
mann sent to the Middle East
in 1944 to offer the lives of
a million Jews in exchange
for 10,000 trucks for the Nazi
war machine.
Hansi Brand, his wife, who
recalls that incident with a
shudder. "Eichmann coldly
transfixed me with his eyes
and said Indifferently, 'Your
husband is going to Istanbul.
You are remaining here as
a hostage.' "
Dr. Martin Paid!, Hungarian-born,
whose wife and two
children were murdered by
the Nazis. He has today a
postcard he was forced to
send from the Auschwitz
death camp to his lister, tell
ing her not to worry.
Leon Kapoh, of Salonika,
Greece, who was in three con
centration' campl and whis
pers, so his wife and children
will not hear: "Do you know
that in Auschwitz they experi
mented on living people who
went mad with agony?" He
Was the sole survivor of a
family of 40 persons". .

Latvia and early settler In
Palestine, who in 1938 was
sent to see Eichmann in Vi
enna in an effort to win re
lease of some Jews for agri
cultural training in Palestine.
"I shook with fear," he re
called. Esther Luria, a Palestinian
studying art in Belgium in
1939 who was caught in the
Russian and then the Nazi
occupation of Lithuania dur
ing a visit to relatives there.
She spent three years in the
Kovno ghetto, painting Hi
scenes and becoming kttoWn
as the "Painter of the Ghetto."
Loses Parents
Dr. Paul D. Merz, 65, a
Czech whose brother, wife
and two children were mur
dered by the Nazis.. He or
ganized the emigration of
Czech Jews to Palistine in
1939 and later was treasurer
of the Jewish underground
army, Hagana, In Palestine,
until 1948.
Abner Loess, who left Ber
lin for Palestine in 1938 and
never again saw his parents.

derground at the age of 15
and witnessed a number of

ment of 1,000 Jewish men
from Czechslovakia to a des

turned. Erichmann was in
charge of the shipment.
Government Spending
May Be $161 Billion
New York - (UPI) - Total
government spending - fed
eral, state and local - may
reach $161 billion in fiscal
1961, the Tax Foundation,
Inc., 'estimates.
It represents an average tax
burden of $2,850 per family,
$100 higher than the previous
fiscal year.

board of education has set

Town Constructed on
Imported Soil Base

Guards Carefully Selected
Of the rings of guards, only
the men in direct contact with
Eichmann are not armed. One
of the aims of the security is
to give Eichmann no chance
to commit suicide - and to
take no chance that one of
the guards might kill him.

The cell itself is high ceil
inged and sparsely furnished
with a bed, a table and two
chairs. One chair is for Eich
mann, the other for the guard
who sits in the cell 24 hours
a day.
Constant Surveillance
A second guard keeps Eich
mann and the guard in the
cell under constant surveil
lance from outside the room,
through a window in the
metal door. The cell has that
single barred window facing
across a passage to a blank
wall.
The room is heated by an
electric heater placed inside a
barred recess in one of the

Eichmann shaves with a
battery -run, plastic - covered
shaver while a guard watches.
It is taken from him as soon
as he is finished. The frames
of his eyeglasses also are of
plastic.
From Eichmann's cell there
is access to another chamber,
in which a third guard sets.
This room opens into a third
in which Eichmann washes
his clothes and hangs them to
dry over the faucet. Here, he
also washes himself. There is
a hot water . shower, and a
toilet - with no door. At no
time floes Eichmann have pri
vacy. Given Exercise
. Once each day Eichmann is
taken out into an inner com
pound of the fortress for half
an hour's exercise. A chalk
line marks a path along which
he and his watchers must
walk. For added security, two
guards and Eichmann all are
dressed exactly the same
that if anyone should get 'ose
enough to try to harm the
prisoner, he wouldn't know
which man was his target.
