Lenten Message By Th REV. FREDERICK H. ARTERTON, D.D. Warden, College of Preachers, Washington Cathedral, Washington, D.C. (Writltn for UPI) We keep the 40 days of Lent in remembrance of Jesus' 40 days in the wilderness. As He used this time of testing primarily for the dlscipling of Himself, so we, as His present day disciples, are urged to make profitable use of this concentrated and consecrated time for our own self-discipline. Interestingly, the word "disciple" means, literally, one under discipline. To discipline oneself-make no mistake about this!-ls very hard to do. It involves strong and sustained determination of mind and emotions and will. It takes discipline to sub ject ourselves to honest self inventory - to try to see our selves as God surely sees us. It takes discipline to let go of long-cherished habits that harm. It takes discipline to stick to resolves we make for the future. (And it is much better to make two and to keep them, than it is to make 20 that go by default within a week!) Really, there is just one thing that makes it possible for us to keep any spiritual resolutions we may make. And that is the certainty that when we make self-discipling resolves that are in tune with the purposeful will of our lov ing Father-God, we have the assurance of His ever-present support - His Grace - to help us to keep them. This Jesus discovered in the wilderness. This we can discover too!
