When Loved One Dies Right
After Family Quarrel
ivery so often I see a wid
ow who lor months has been

pressed, una

house work.
When I can
not find any
thing physi

with her, I ask
her what
made her so
unhappy, and

tells me that one day she gave
her meek, quiet husband an
awful scolding because he had
not gotten up and gone to
work, or during the night she
had found him in the kitchen
taking a drink of whiskey.
Later, when she came back
into the room she found him
lying there-dead. Then, when
she talked to the family doc

tell you that he was suffering
terribly from pains In his
heart? That was why he
couldn't get up that morning
(or that was why he was tak

lief from the awful pain)".
And the wife had to say, "He
never said a word to me
about any illness, and I did
not even know he had been
to consult you."
Then the poor woman be

ashamed of what - unwitting

said to me, "I would give any
thing to have him back for
just five minutes to apologize
humbly to him. Then perhaps
I could sleep again."
When I talk with these un
happy women, I think of the
many times when a wife gives
her quiet husband a violent
scolding. Probably he has an-

oh, how unhappy she would

her days, she would keep say

temper and gave her father
a terrible scolding about some

When she went up there- was
a note saying: "You can get

peace of mind again.

Message
By
Th REV.
FREDERICK H. ARTERTON,
D.D.
Warden, College of Preachers,
Washington Cathedral,
Washington, D.C.
(Writltn for UPI)
We keep the 40 days of
Lent in remembrance of Jesus'
40 days in the wilderness. As
He used this time of testing
primarily for the dlscipling of
Himself, so we, as His present
day disciples, are urged to
make profitable use of this
concentrated and consecrated
time for our own self-discipline.
Interestingly, the word
"disciple" means, literally,
one under discipline.
To discipline oneself-make
no mistake about this!-ls very
hard to do. It involves strong
and sustained determination
of mind and emotions and
will. It takes discipline to sub
ject ourselves to honest self
inventory - to try to see our
selves as God surely sees us.
It takes discipline to let go of
long-cherished habits that
harm. It takes discipline to
stick to resolves we make for
the future. (And it is much
better to make two and to
keep them, than it is to make
20 that go by default within a
week!)
Really, there is just one
thing that makes it possible
for us to keep any spiritual
resolutions we may make.
And that is the certainty that
when we make self-discipling
resolves that are in tune with
the purposeful will of our lov
ing Father-God, we have the
assurance of His ever-present
support - His Grace - to help
us to keep them. This Jesus
discovered in the wilderness.
This we can discover too!
