Score was 63 to 56. Triumph carried the fire- powered Klamaths back into the state . A-l t o u r n a ment where they placed third last year and ascertained no -less than a league co-crown tor tne undefeated leaders of District 6. Success at the free toss line accounted for the final margin in the fracas. But, phenominal lotig range shooting accuracy in the first half, a surge to a substantial lead in the third quarter and ability to frus trate and counter Medford's rallv challenges were key ele ments of the victory. Kent Hunsaker and Sherm Allen provided the main scoring Dunch. Fred Biehn and Hun saker strong floor play and Gary Patzke and Kay Taylor sturdy rebounding for Coach Dean White's KF crew. Ground Lost The Tornado, in defeat, held onto second place in the cir cuit standings but lost ground to Grants Pass which was only a game behind the Hurricane after trimming Crater 74 to 63 also on Friday evening. Klamath fought in front for keeps at 26 to 24 in the waning minutes of the first half. Its struggle to go on top to stay was not for the faint-hearted spectator. For, the count was tied 11 times and lead switches totaled eight before the' Pels were permanently ahead of the reluctant never-say-die Tornado. The Pelicans winged to a 13-point gap in the third quar ter. This bulge was reestab lished on four occasions against the bids of the Med- fordites before the determined Tornadoes cut the difference down to five, digits at the start of the final chapter, Then, Oregon's top-rated ag gregation widened to 11 mark ers and held on from there, withstanding a Medford press and playing keep away in the last three minutes. Still missing from the KF lineup were regulars Bruce Brlckner and Wally Palmberg, still recuperating from mumps and an appendectomy, respec tively. Quinney Has 28 Bob Quinney spurred the valiant but futile effort of Medford to rally by tabulating 20 of his night's high of 28 points in the second half Sharpshooting Hunsaker, who had 26 (9 of 1 1 from the field) for his Klamath labors, put in 15 of them In the third and fourth quarters, that much off setting Quinney's efforts. Al len, with five of his six field goals in the first half, chalked up 14 points for KF and Barry had 12 points, all on field shots, for the Black Tornado. Quinney cleared the back boards 14 times for Coach Frank Roclandt's Medfords and Steve Hoots had nine Tor nado retrieves before fouling out. Patzke and Taylor had eight rebounds each as the Pels had a slight 30 to 29 team edge under the boards. Klamath beat Medford on a 19 to 12 difference on free heaves. The Tornado dupli cated Klamath's 22 buckets from the field but took more shots in doing so. The Pels had a sizzling .449 average on 49 tries and Medford averaged .361 on 61. Mac's Eighth Clips South GP McLoughlin Junior high eighth grade basketball team nudged South Grants Pass 35 to 33 Friday. South's seventh beat the Mc Loughlin Golds 24 to 23. Mac's eighth had 8 to 7, 15 to 10 and 25 to 24 quarter leads. Gordon Lilly got 13 points for the Bulldogs and Larry Stockman 10 and Revis had nine for South. The Golds had an 11 to 0 gap after one quarter in the seventh grade mix but South was on top 13 to 11 at half time. Roger Johnson put in 15 counters for the Medford team and Pruitt eight for GP. MEDFORD MAIL After a first quarter which had seven lead changes and eight ties, Medford was on top 18 to 17. Patzke tied the game on a free toss but Dick Rags dale and Quinney netted push ers for 22 to 18 Medford. Hun saker hit one of his long pushes but Barry tallied for Medford off a Ragsdale feed and it was 24 to 20. Goes To 31-24 Taylor hemped two giflcrs. Hunsaker and Biehn cooper ated on a steal and Hunsaker drove to score. Then Hun- saker's shove shot went through. It was 26 to 24 for the Pelicans. A free toss by Hunsaker, a long fielder by Allen and a rebounder basket by Biehn extended KF to 31 to 24. Tichenor tossed in a gift try for Medford and Barry a long shot and Klamath led 31 to 27 at the ha If time buzzer. A push from the corner, a rebound goal and a free heave, all by Hunsaker, a couple of close shots by Patzke and a charity throw by Biehn, while Ragsdale put in a lone foul toss for Medford, gave Klam ath 41 to 28 command 2'4 minutes into the third quarter. The clubs battled evenly for foe next four minutes and KF had margins of 43 to 30, 45 to 32, 49 to 36 and 51 to 38. Down To Five Then, in the last 1V4 min utes of the panel Quinney hit a rebounder and Barry a jump. Quinney added a pair of free heaves and the stand ing for three quarters was Klamath 51, Medford 44. Quinney's long push with sev en minutes left in the game cut the spread to the five-point difference at 51 to 46. Two free shots by Taylor, Biehn's bucket on a swing across the key and Hunsaker's driver made it 57 to 46. Quin ney traded two free tosses for Hunsaker's jumper then put in a hook rebound and a long push and the KF spread was 59 to 52 with four minutes to play. It went to 63 to 52, how ever, on Patzke's rebound shot and two free shots by Hun saker 2 Quinney and Barry closed out the scoring for Med ford. While Medford could not overtake the Pelicans in the stretch in the varsity conflict, the Black Tornado jayvees did just that against their Klam Five Schools In A-l Hoop Tournament United Press International Klamath Falls, Grant, Wil son, Bend and Scappoose gain ed berths in next month s Ore gon class A-l high school bas ketball tournament at Eugene by posting crucial victories Friday night. Klamath Falls, the state's number-one ranked A-l squad, posted a 63-56 win over seventh-ranked Medford to cinch a spot in the 16-team tourney. Number two-ranked Grant, the only undefeated A-l squad, gained a tourney spot by handing Franklin a 60-53 setback in Portland Interscho lastic league action. Wilson, ranked number four, became Portland's sec ond entrant in the Slate Tour nament by edging Jefferson 46-43. Sixth - ranked Bend and Scappose defeated league op ponents to gain tourney berths. Bend defeated Hermis ton 56-52 in Intermountain league play while Scappoose outscored Wy'east 73 - 70 in Wilco league competition. Move Closer Roseburg, Central Catholic, Marshfield, Corvallis and Til lamook all gained victories Friday night to move a step closer to gaining a tournament berth. Sander Dunks Rebound The junior Tornado caught up at 50-all with l'i minutes left on Larry Sander's field bucket. KF went back ahead 51 to 50 when Ray Bogotay made one of two free tries with 58 seconds to go. Sander missed a free shot with a half- minute remaining but dunked his own rebound for 52 to 51 With seven seconds on the scoreboard clock Dan Miles iced it with two gifters. Klamath was on top at all intermissions 15 to 10, 34 to 22 and 44 to 36. Dave Stippich was high scorer for the Peli cans with 14 markers and Mark White had 12 for Med ford. KF sophomores won the first game of the triplebill 57 to 51 after the Medford spohs had whittled a 16 to 29 half way deficit down to 39 to 41 at the third intermission. The young man from Japan was one of nine Medford standard bearers to score a triumph and one of five to pin his Comet adversary. Cra ter won three of the varsity bouts and one other ended in a draw. Kondo yielded a two-point margin to his 123-pound divi sion rival, Tom Richardson, on a first round takedown then proceeded to pile up a decisive edge of 16 to 2 be fore gaining the fall with 13 seconds left in the third round. Don got three near falls and a reversal for his points. Said Kondo's coach, Art Keith, "I wish that Don could be with us for another season. He has just begun to learn after having to wrestle varsity matches all year without any previous experience . . . We are proud to have had him as a member of our team." First Round Falls Larry Gunn, Wayne Fields, Al Funston and Jim Spitz all won their matches for the Tornado with first round pins. For all but Spitz it was the seventh victory by fall this season. Crater's winners were Butch Barber, Rush Walker and Dave McGee. Men's Church League Second Round Starts First Baptist, First Method ist and YMCA won opening second round games Thursday in the men's church basket ball league. The Baptists beat Church of the Nazarene 57 to 31. They had a 31 to 19 halfway lead and Owen Winger scored 22 points. Dave Serry had 12 for Nazarene. Y downed First Christian 79 to 47 as Mel Jackson put in 28 counters and Ron Tay lor 19. Glenn McKerrow had 19 for Christian. At halftime it was 37 to 26 for the Y. There was much fast play and the Y's Ed McGinty put in a bucket for the opposition. Jack Brown had 13 points and Don Wendt 12 as Meth odist won 46 to 29 from Phoe nix Presbyterian for whom Tom Atchison had 13. Meth odist led 27 to 18 at the half. It used a fast break to good effect and had strong defense. Murray Rose broke one mark at Harmon pool by swimming the 220 yard free style in 2:04.5. Tom Coulston then cracked the 200 yard in dividual medley with 2:07.7, Lance Larson bettered the 200 yard butterfly in a time of 2:07.5 and Chuck Bittick set a 440 yard free style mark of 4:29 flat to round out the Trojans' individual smashers.
