FEBRUARY 19. 1961 B' 7 Grants Pass Tops Crater 74 to 63 Grants Pass-Greater height was the major advantage here Friday night as the Grants Pass High school Cavemen de feated Crater 74 to 63 in a Southern Oregon conference basketball ruckus between two hot shooting teams. The Cavemen upped their league record to 7-5, one game back of Mcdford which drop ped a 63 to 56 decision to Klamath Falls. Crater had a 3-9 league count after Friday and is out of the running for one of the two state tourney berths from District 6 A-l. GP had a .760 field bucket ing average in the second half while Crater hit for .534. For the full game the Cavemen had .543 and the Comets .436. The Comets were on top in the early minutes of play but GP busted a 7-all tie with a field goal midway through the opening quarter and was on top the rest of the evening. Grants Pass had 19 to 20, 33 Ron Olsen Displays Best Built Model The entry of Ron Olscn was judged car of the show last week end in the second annual Modelramma. Steve Eichelberger took runnerup honors in the model car event and Glen Tye was third. Other wind's were Lance Jennings and Gary Wheeler. Crater hacked the margin to three points at 27 to 24 in the second quarter and was within five markers of the Cavemen in the third. Louis Alvarez swiped the ball five time for Crater in the last quarter. Grants Pass pushed ahead in the last couple of minutes to down Crater 57 to 52 in the junior varsity game. After an 11-all first stanza deadlock the Comets were in front 27 to 25 at the half and 37 to 33 after three quarters. Czechs To Host World Skating Meet Prague-IUPD - The Interna tional Skating Union has as surred Czech organizers that the 1962 world firgure skating championship will be held in their country. The Czech committee was bitterly disappointed when the the 1961 meet, scheduled for Prague next week, was cancelled as a sign of mourn ing for members of the Unit ed States team killed in a pet plane crash in Brussels Wed nesday. At first, the Czech organiz ers asked the ISU to reconsid er its action but Friday they announced they would abide by the decision. However, the comimttee still insisted that the best tribute to the memory of the dead American skaters would be to hold the meet on schedule. Hatfield Pays Off Liberty Bowl Debt Salem-diPD - Gov. Mark Hatfield put a 15-pound Oregon salmon in the mail Friday for Pennsylvania Gov.' David Lawrence. It is Lawrence's prize for Penn State's Liberty Bowl football victory over the University of Oregon. If Oregon had won, Hal field would have received a lobster dinner from Lawrence. That was John Thomas' sad lament yesterday in the wake of his second loss to young Valeri Brumel of Russia in thevhigh jump at the New York Athletic club indoor track games at Madison Square Garden Friday night. Brumel, the 18 -year-old Moscow schoolboy who shock ed track observers with a jump of 7 feet, 4'2 inches from a first takeoff at Lenin grad two weeks ago, took the measure of the Boston jump ing jack when he cleared 7-3 on his third try in their head on meeting. Thomas, a year older and four inches taller at 6-5, miss ed on three attempts at 7-2, and much to the dismay of a capacity crowd of 15,930 at Madison Square Garden, had to settle for 7-1. And even at that height it wasn't easy for Thomas, the first man to ever jump seven feet indoors. He then m i s s e d three straight attempts at 7-2 while Brumel, smiling and happy to Idaho's Vandals Subdue Oregon State's Beavers Moscow-lUPIl - Idaho's Van dals figured to be tougher this lime around for Oregon State. They were! The Vandals, beaten by Ore gon Stale in three previous basketball meetings this sea son, thumped the Beavers 62 57 Friday night in the first of a two-game week end ser ies. And the loss, coupled with a Seattle victory over Wash ington State, knocked the Ore gon Staters out of a tic with Chieftains in the Northwest independents' mythical stand ings in the battle for an NCAA at-large playoff berth. Seattle stood 14-7. Oregon State was 13-8. James, Porter Pace Dale James and Rich Port er, Idaho's classy guards, pac ed the Vandal offense. James scored 20 points and Porter tallied 16. Big Karl Anderson and Jay Carty topped Oregon State's scorers with 13 apiece. Idaho, which jumped off to a 9-0 lead and held a 27-23 halftime advantage, won in the final five minutes after the Beavers had rallied to take the lead at 50-49. Rinaldi, who had been balk ing at the fee offered him, agreed Saturday after he and his manager, Luigi Proictti, conferred for two hours with Lew Burston, the Garden's ambasador-at-large who came here to see him. 1941 Through 1957 Husky Win Over Oregon Sparked by Bill Hanson Seattle - (UPD - Washington, led by center Bill Hanson's sparkling second half perform ance, recorded a 54-47 basket ball victory ovr Oregon Fri day night. i Hanson, who finished with 20 points to top all scorers, poured in 12 ill the second half as the Huskies overcame a 27-24 Oregon halftime lead. From there, the Huskies led from three to seven points the rest of the contest. The lead was tied nine times in the first half. Glenn Moore topped Ore Loyola on Top in West Coast Cage Conference United Press International Loyola led the West Coast Athletic conference race with an 8-1 mark after rolling past UOP 70-61 Friday night, but persistent USF (5-1) and St. Mary's (4-2) refuse to give up the ship. Ed Bento had 24 Friday night in leading the Lions past the Tigers at Stockton. The losers' Ken Stanley also had 24, but as usual, got little help from his mates. The Dons looked especially strong battering Pepperdine, 66-40. Harry Dinncll had 17 for the losers, while Bob Gail lard scored 16 for the Dons. Washington warmed up for a Big Five game with South ern California with a 54-47 victory over tough Oregon. Seattle moved to the top of the tightly-packed Northwest independent group with a hys terical 79-77 win over Wash ington State. When Ray But ler hit a 10-footer with four seconds left, it was the first time Seattle had led in the contest. Terry Ball of the Cougars scored 23, while Ed Miles had 20 for the winners. Meanwhile, Idaho upset Oregon State, 62-57. The night's action put Se attle at 14-7, Oregon State at 13-8 and Oregon at 12-8. Kentucky Edged UCLA Touring UCLA lost a heart- breaker at Lexington, Ky. to Kentucky. The score was 77- 76 In a contest which saw the Bruins twice fight back from 14-point deficits California finally won Its first Big Five game with a 52-50 victory over arch-rival Stanford. Stan Morrison had 17 for the Bears, now 1-6 in league play. A small scale fight broke out after the game when over-enthusiastic Stan ford students lifted the straw hats from the informal Cali fornia band.
