FEBRUARY 19. 1961 B 5 MEDFORDtjjWTRIBUNB SIPCDIKTS Shults Spurs SOC En Win Over PSC Ashland - A scorching hot Southern Oregon college bas ketball contingent, led by the outside gunning accuracy o Jerry Shults, freshman from Medford, romped 57 to 46 over Portland State here Fri day evening in Oregon Colle giate conference contention. Shults, who topped the night's scoring with 21 count ers, swished eight of nine push and jump shots from the outside as the Red Raiders of the Rogue fired from the field at a .520 clip in the first half. The Raiders had a halftime spread of 33 to 21. Their wid est difference was 16 points, 37 to 21, with just over a minute played in the second half. Play was on more even terms over the last 20 min utes. Portland State cut down its deficit to eight points at 52 to 44 but in the last min utes of the scuffle, SOC beat PSC at its own game of ball control and was able to close out on points from free tosses and criples. Shot at .538 SOC took the lead for good with less than four minutes played when Bob Jensen's free heave broke a 4-all dead lock. The Raiders gunned .538 from the field for the game while the Vikings shot .320. Shults on his way to his top score put in his first five field tries. Bill Turner was second high in the tussle with 17 counters for Portland. ,SOC had a slim 27 to 25 edge in rebounding with Jensen get ting seven retrieves. Turner led for the game with nine. Local Entrants In Telephone Bowling Meet Medford's telephone bowl ers are in Salem this week end for the annual intracom- pany tourney that may lead to statewide and coastwide honors. At stake are statewide team and individual trophies, and the Mark R. Sullivan trophy honoring the chairman of the Pacific Telephone and Tele graph company. The trophy goes to the state with the high est gross score-total pins plus handicap. On the statewide level, the 48 teams competing, including nine from Eugene, are rolling for high team series while in dividuals will seek singles, doubles and all events tro phies. A special tourney event is the three-frame competition between vice president and general managers of the com pany's six operating areas. F M. Mitchell, vice president and general manager, will rep resent Oregon. He is last year's defending champion. Irish Coast Over Portland South Bend - AM) - Noire Dame raced to a 16 point lead in the final 10 minutes of the first half Saturday and breez ed the rest of the way to an 80-49 basketball victory over Portland. The Irish held only a 20-17 edge approaching midpoint of the first half when Eddie Schnurr and Bill Crosby fired a rally that blossomed into a 36-21 margin at the inter mission. Portland scored only four points during the stretch. Schnurr paced the Irish scorers with 17 points. Crosby and Armand Reo finished with 16 each and John Dearie had 14. Bill Garner, the only Pilot 'n his in double figures, led his team with 22 points. T'.-e decision gave the Irish an 11-12 mark and put the Pilots 12-9 for the season. EOC Knots For First United Press International Eastern Oregon's Mountain eers moved into a first place tie in the Oregon Collegiate conference basketball race with idle Oregon Ted Friday night. The Mountaineers, also clinching one of the OCC's two berths in the four-team Oregon NAIA District 2 tour nament next month, beat Ore gon College of Education 66 62 at La Grande. Eastern Ore gon and the Owls sport 9-4 records. Southern Oregon bounced Portland State 57-46 in the other conference game at Ash land. Tom Neel and Pasco Arri tola paced the Eastern Ore Bon win with 20 and 18 points, respectively. Dennis Spencer had 1 to top the Oregon col lege attack. Natators Near 300-Mile Goal In Tank Swim Bruce Hess and Ted Lyons were still well in the lead at last report in the 300-mile "swim to Portland" conducted by the city of Medford park and recreation department. Each had swum 291 miles. Rhonda Hess was next with 206'-! and Linda Hess had 263. Distances have been record ed by city and high school swim team members during workout periods at the Med ford YMCA and in Hawthorne park pool. A mile is 88 lengths of the Y pool or lenguis oi the Hawthorne pool and 300 miles is equal to b.iuu lengths of the YMCA facility. Mile in 30 Minutes. Kenneth Lyons, city recrea tion supervisor, reports that an average swimmer can go a milp in about 30 minutes. Swimming six hours (12 miles) a day, it would take 25 days to go 300 miles, rour mnes is the most any one of the local natators has swum in a day in the swim to Portland event. Fifty swimmers started the competition. Twenty remain after colds, holidays and other factors took their toll. Talent Defeats Hanby Quintets Talent - Talent erased a nine-point deficit in the last quarter Friday to nick Hanby Junior hish of Gold Hill bas ketball varsity 38 to 35. Talent was on top 10 to 6 at the quarter but lagged 14 to 21 at halftime and 22 to 31 after three periods. Dave White of the Gold Hill gang was high scorer with 14 points. Jim Consbruck had 13 for Talent and EuRcne Hill 1- - . In the junior varsity tangle Talent won 25 to 24 with Mike Furrcr getting 11. St. Mary's Takes on SH Trojans St. Mary's high and Sac red Heart of Klamath Falls basketball teams meet here this afternoon. Junior varsity action is set for 1:30 p.m. at the St. Mar y's gym with varsity play to follow. Teams of the two schools met at Klamath Falls last month with St. Mary's var sity victor by 20 points. St. Mary's compiled a rec ord of 6-2 in the Jackson County B league while SH is 6-6 in the Klamath Coun ty league. Next action for St. Mary's after today will be at Eagle Point on Tuesday, Feb. 21, when the Crusaders meet Prospect in a league playoff game. Winner will go against the Klamath-Lake county champ in a series for the District 5B title. Crater 9th Tips South Central Point - Crater high freshmen, with fair shooting and their fast break clicking for points, tripped South Grants Pass 52 to 35 Friday in basketball. It was the ninth win against two losses for the Comets in contention with Southern Ore gon conference foes. Crater had 15 to 7, 28 to 15 and 40 to 23 advantages at the quarters. Darrell Summerfield totaled 14 points for the Com ets and Ireland 13 for South. Black Archery Shoot Slated Today The Rogue Archers of Med ford are sponsoring an indoor archery tournament today at the indoor range in the Med ford Rifle and Pistol club's building on Villas rd. just off the Crater Lake highway about four miles north of Med ford. All archers are invited to participate.-Visitors are wel come. This is tile fourth winter tournament of the Southern Oregon League of Archers which is composed of archery clubs in southwestern Oregon. Refreshments will be avail able.
