Mrs. Johnson will receive guests at the reception for dis tinguished ladies Wednesday, January 18. instead of Mrs. John F. Kennedy, who Is limiting her activties prior to the official inaugural ceremony Friday. (UPI Telephoto) Betrothal News Told at Party A New Year's eve dinner party at Mon Desir Dining inn was the occasion for the an nouncement of the engage ment of Miss Barbara McKay Cheney, Wash., to Ensign Richard Van Vlcck, Medford. The bride-to-be is the daugh ter of Mr. and Mrs. Bruce McKay, Cheney, and is a stu- dent at the University of Ore gon Medical school, Portland. Her fiance is the son of Mr, and Mrs. Forest Van Vleck, 1618 East Jackson boulevard. Both are graduates of Ore gon State college. Miss McKay will complete her studies In September. Her fiance has spent the last four months at the Naval Officers Candidate school, Newport, R. I., where he received his commission In December. During the next two months he is to be sta tioned at Port Hueneme, Calif., for further training in the Naval Civil Engineering corps. Wedding plans hava not been announced. Republican To Speak "The Challenge of the Re publicans for 1961" will be the topic of Peter Gunnar, chairman of the Oregon Re publican Central committee, when he speaks here Monday. The chairman will talk for the January luncheon meeting of the Jackson county unit, Oregon Federation of Wo men's Republican clubs, to be held Monday, January 16, at 12 noon at Norths Chuck Wagon. Mr. Gunnar heads a law firm in Salem. Mrs. E. A. Llttrell, new president of the club, will pre side. Ashland Woman Vacations In South Ashland - Mrs. Elizabeth Sommcr, 153 Oak street, is vacationing in southern Cali fornia with relatives and friends. Junior Women To Hold Party For Husbands Members of the Medford Junior Women's club will hold their annual "husbands' party" February 4. The group will gather at the home of Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Grigsby Jr., 2886 Lapine avenue, for a late dinner following bowl ing. Mrs. William Clegg will assist Mrs. Grigsby. The club met January 11 at the home of Mrs. J. L. Holmes, 303 Willamette ave- cnue. Plans were discussed concerning t h e membership tea which will be held in February. Mrs. Holmes and Mrs. James Wells were ap pointed co-chairman of the event. A work party was organ ized for Wednesday, January 18, at the club's clothing pool in Lincoln Elementary school. Mrs. R. J. Hercher and Mrs. Harlan E. Weaver will con duct a nursery at the Weaver home, 1040 Murray avenue. Recently d o n a te d clothing will be sorted and prepared for distribution to youngsters in need of adequate clothing. The club president, Mrs. Gene F. Chamberlain, appoint ed Mrs. L. D. McConnell to serve as chairman of district I, Oregon Federation of Wo Women's Vogue club's sewing contest. Mrs. Richard Acker man will direct the participa tion of Junior Women s club Marriage Takes Place In Eugene News of the wedding of Miss Jo Ann Shore to Michael Stewart Youngblood is of in- terest in Medford. The bride Is a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Gerald Garland Shore, Yaki ma, Wash., and the bride groom's parents are Mr. and Mrs. Ross A. Youngblood 3255 Hollywood avenue. Wesley Foundation chapel at Eugene was the setting of the ceremony, held December 23. The Rev. Robert G. Kings bury officiated at the double ring candlelight ceremony. Given in marriage by h e r father, the bride wore a floor- length gown of embroidered silk organza with a silk or ganza cabbage rose at the back of the waistline. Her silk illusion veil was held by a coronet of waxed orange blos soms and she carried a cas cade of white gardenias. Miss Louise Davis, Eugene, maid of honor, and Mrs. Nich olas Steffanoff, Eugene, brides matron, wore peacock blue velveteen sheath dresses with velveteen bow headpieces and carried crescent bouquets of red poinsettias. The bride's mother wore beige lace and the mother of the bridegroom was dressed in steel gray silk. Their cor sages were orchids. Robert Youngblood, Med ford, brother of the bride groom, was best man and ush ers were Mr. Steffanoff, Eu gene, and Joseph Tripp, Portland. The reception was held in the reception room of the chapel. The couple visited in Port land, Yakima, Seattle and Olympia on their honeymoon. The bride is a graduate of Yakima Valley Junior college and will receive her degree in June from the University of Oregon school of journalism, She is a past president of Alpha Gamma Delta so rority and a member of Theta Sigma Phi, journalism honor ary. The bridegroom, who is as signed to Fort Lewis, Wash., with the United States Army, will complete his education at the University of Oregon school of architecture follow ing his discharge from the service. The floor length gown of a French in spired design, is of coupe de velour fashioned with siring straps and matching stole. The floral pattern of red flowers and moss green leaves is on an ivory background. She will also wear long white kid gloves and a strand of pearls. Among other events the Hatfields will attend are the reception Thursday for governors of the states and the inaugural parade. For the latter event Mrs. Hatfield plans to wear a black wool suit with red hat. (UPI Telephoto) Rwiyard-Kamlis Rites Held hi Greek Church A wedding of interest to val ley residents was held Janu ary 7 in Portland when Miss Sophia Evangline Kanelis of that city became the bride of Richard Lee Runyard, also Portland. Mr. Runyard is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Don Run yard, 2748 Jacksonville High way, Medford. The bride's parents are Mr. and Mrs. John Kanelis, Portland. The wedding was held at 7:30 p.m. in the Greek Ortho dox church, and Father An gelo Gavalas officiated at the double ring ceremony. Mr. Kanelis escorted his daughter to the altar and gave her in marriage. The bride wore a floor length wedding gown of white chantilly lace with chapel train and finger tip veil. She carried a bou quet of roses and stephanotis encircling a white orchid. Honor attendant was Miss Barbara Eva, Portland. Brides matrons were Mrs. Constan tino Kanelis, sister-in-law of the bride and Mrs. Richard Frost, both of Portland, and Mrs. Donald Spangrud, Salem. They wore dresses of red satin with matching accessories and carried bouquets of red roses and white carnations. Norman Halbrook, Port land, brother - in - law of the bride, served as best man and ushers were Charles A. Sams, Oswego, and William B. Bar num, Medford. both fraternity j brothers of the bridegroom, 'and Peter J. Kanelis, brother i of the bride. j Mrs. Donald Finlcy. vocal : instructor for the bride, was soloist. It was followed by a buffet supper at the home of the bride's parents for 75 rela tives and friends. The bride, a native of Port land, attended Jefferson High school. The bridegroom at tended Medford High school and is a graduate of the Uni versity of Oregon. They are traveling to Chi cago. HI . for their honeymoon. The bridegroom was for merly territory manager for Westinghouse appliance sales in Southern Oregon and Northern California. For the past three and a half years he has been district sales pro motion and training manager for Westinghouse in Port land After January 16 the couple will reside in St. Joseph. Mich., where Mr. Runyard will assume the position of area dealer development man ager for Whirlpool corporation. Parents Tell Betrothal News . Mr. and Mrs. N. M. Win chester. National City, Calif. have announced the engage ment of their daughter, Bar bara Louise, to Lt. (jg) Or lin M. Stansfield, son of Mr. and Mrs. E. M. Stansfield, of 3358 Bursell road, Central Point. Miss Winchester is a graduate of San Diego State college and is teaching in Chula Vista, Calif. Lt. Stans field was graduated from Medford High school in 1954 and Oregon State college in 1958. He is presently attached to Tactical Air Control Squad ron 13 at the Naval Air sta tion, San Diego, Calif. A summer wedding is plan ned. Couple Married In Washington Eagle Point-Miss Katherine K. Self became the bride of William Clark in a ceremony held Saturday, December 30, at the Park Wedding chapel, Vancouver, Wash. The bride is a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. C. R. Self, Eagle Point, and Mr. Clark is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Nolan Clark, also Eagle Point. Mr. Clark is an enlistee in the Army, and is stationed at Fort Ord, Calif. Mrs. Clark will make her home with her parents, until he has complet ed basic training when she plans to join him. Woman Honored On 80th Birthday A family gathering January 5 celebrated the 80th birthday anniversary of Mrs. Matilda Dietrich, 939 North Central avenue. Here for the event were Mrs. Dietrich's two daughters, Mrs. F. A. Wenzel, Edmonton, Canada, and Mrs. Charles Hansen, Morrow Bay, Calif., and Mr. Hansen. Mrs. Diet rich's two sons, Robert, Palm Springs, Calif., and Michael, Hollywood, were unable to be with their mother. . Mrs. Dietrich, a native of Minnesota, has lived in Med ford many years and works with a number of organiza tions.
