The Week celebrates the founding of the Junior Cham ber in 1915 in St. Louis, the brainchild of Henry Giessen- bier Jr., who called together members of a St. Louis danc ing club to form the Young Men's Progressive Civic as sociation. The name was later changed to the Junior Citi zens, starting the abbrevia tion, "JC." In 1918 the St. Louis Cham ber of Commerce invited the Junior Citizens to become af filiated as the Junior Cham ber of Commerce. The Jay cees, however, are no longer an arm of the Chamber of Commerce. Though the sim ilarity in name remains, only the im of civic betterment Is similar. Los Angeles -(UPD- Naasan Zeghabe's wife and two of his three young daughters waited tensely In court while the black-robed Judge deter mined the confessed bank robber's future. , U.S. District Court juu0e Thurmond Clark Monday called Zcghabe before him. The sentence, he said, was 10 years in federal prison - sus pended. Zcghabe, 35, would be able to go home to his family, the active part of his sentence being five years on probation. "Thank you for giving our daddy back - we need hlml" cried Zeghabe's daughter, Nadya, 11. She threw her arms around the judge and loudly kissed him on the cheek. . "I will never give you cause to regret, your honor," said a smiling Zeghabe. Look To Future While the court does not condone your actions," said Clark, "It must look to the fu ture. This seems to be a case in which to make an excep tion." Clark's faith In Zcghabe grew during the Christmas holidays when the defendant was allowed to go home to his family in suburban Ana heim for Christmas and vol untnrily returned to Jail two days later. Clark had approved the Christmas furlough without bail after Nadya had written a plaintive letter saying "we have never been separated on Christmas. BECHTOLD UPI Financial Editor New York - IP - The hous ing industry is losing its re cuperative Impact on the na tion s econ omy and will continue to do so for at least the next five years, n real estate execu tive declared Tuesday. Morris K a r p, prcsi- Uenry uechtold dent of Realty Equities Corp., said this situ ation has become obvious dur ing the current recession. In the recessions of 1950, 1954 and 1958, housing starts rose sharply while the rest of the economy was declining, there by helping to shore up the decline and support the suc ceeding economic upswing. But in 1960, Karp noted, housing followed the sluggish trend of the general economy. And he does not see the indus try returning to its counter cyclical role for at least five ndustry Reported to Recuperative Impact years. Karp does not support the belief among many industry and political leaders that the housing decline has reflected a tightness in mort gage money. He said mortgage money has been ample the past six months, and in many areas interest rates have de clined somewhat without any stimulating effect on housing. People Older, Younger Basically, the realty equities executive declared, home building appears to be falter ing on a fundamental weak ness in consumer demand based on the shifts in the age composition of the U.S. popu lation. The population is growing fast at both ends with fewer new households being formed in the middle because of the low birth rates of the 1930s. The housing demands of the elderly and the very, young do not call for new homes or large space requirements, Karp stated. To back up this view he cited apartment construction and renting, which caters more to the young and old, and which held up very well in 1960. He also recalled that from 1945 to 1960 additions to the stock of U.S. housing exceeded the growth of new households by more than two million units. Sales of luxury and inex pensive units have been good despite the overall softening In housing demand,, and Karp sees this performance con tinuing through 1966. ' Luxury Homes Selling . He noted that luxury homes, especially in prime suburban areas like New York's West chester county and Chicago's Oak Park, can always sell be cause living in these areas imply a certain social con notation desired by young executives on the way up in the business world. Inexpensive homes continue in demand . because young couples still prefer a home to an apartment if the carrying charges are not too great. The slack in housing has occurred in the broad middle Bob Hope Resting On Doctor's Order Palm Springs, Calif.. -fflPD-Bob Hope, 56, is resting up under doctor's orders. The energetic comedian "pooped out" of a pro-celebrity match last week in Los Angeles after playing five holes, but he was able to keep business appointments later in the day. "I'll stay in Palm Springs for three or four days' rest, then I'm heading east for some benefits and other appear ances," Hope said Tuesday., "I feel pretty good, but the doctor ' has given me some medicine for my blood pres sure. .- "It's just a matter of slow ing down the pace, and that's exactly what I'm doing now." income area. The resale mar ket for old homes has slacken ed and many families are un willing to accept the lower price for their present homes and assume the charges and costs for the new ones, Karp explained. He doesn't see any change in this situation until the mid-sixties when the huge crop of war-time babies comes of marrying age.
