Two-Car Accident Reported in Ashland Ashland - A twoicar acci dent occurred on East Main st. in Ashland Tuesday about 4:10 p.m. Involved were cats driven by Calire Vanderpool Wil liams, 64, ol 486 Allison St., Ashland, and Hazel Price Reed, 45, of route 1, box 327, Talent. Both cars were traveling south on East Main st., ac cording to Ashland police. The Williams car was passing the Reed car when a car pulled out from a parking space, causing the Reed car to swerve into the path of the Williams car, police said. The front bumper of the Reed car was struck by the Williams car, police report. No cita tions were issued. George Bernard Shaw Had Other Women, Letters Revea I New York. N.Y. - IUP1I -Newly disclosed letters which have revealed George Bernard Shaw had another woman in his life - a pretty American actress - also show him spry enough at the age of 90 to threaten to shoot her if she kept a promise to come live with him. In fact the hitherto secret letters which the late play wright wrote to actress and painter Molly Tompkins of Atlanta, Ga. - whom he some times referred to aa "Molli kins" - show him struggling in old age to keep a number of women admirers at bay. Details of the intense friend ship with Mrs. Tompkins, 45 years his junior, and other facets of his private life were revealed in more than 125 letters Shaw wrote to the actress from the time they met in Europe in 1921 to 1949, a year before his death. Valued at about $25,000 in the original, the letters have been published in full by New York publisher Clarkson Pot ter in a volume entitled "To a Young Actress." Compiled by Son They were compiled by the actress' son, Peter Tompkins, a Washington, DC, author whom Shaw helped send through school when the mother and her sculptor hus band Lawrence fell on hard times. They arc spiced throughout with the type of bitter-sweet comments on love, sex and politics that made Shaw an immortal in his time. Soma of the language appeared in his plays, but much of it is entirely fresh. The great G.B.S. was an outspoken advocate of free love in his plays. But in his letters he described himself in the last years of his life as hounded by marriage offers and outright propositions from women admirers. All of .them he either shunned, or as In Mrs. Tompkins' case, kept on a platonic basis for the sake of his wife, Charlotte. Mrs. Tompkins died earlier this year, 10 years after Shaw. "Before you were born I have had to do with sirens as seductive as you," Shaw wrote to the actress. "What sort of creature do you suppose I should be if I had done noth ing but exploit my celebrated fascination all my life?" Offered Advice . His relations with her show ed traces of his "Pygmalion" the Shaw play on which the musical hit "My Fair Lady" was based. In the early cor respondence particularly, he offered stern advice on how to perfect her stage technique, get along with directors and get rid of "Americanisms" -including "that awful accent." "You are a disgrace to me," he told her in language that smacked of Professor Henry Higgins scolding the cockney flower girl Eliza Doolittle. "Can't you muster up enough dignity to feel that you must not on any provocation what ever say things that are meant to be offensive and humili ating?" Mrs. Tompkins' letters to the playwright were lost, leaving no firm Indication to what his sometimes biting, sometimes humorous, often touching replies were di rected. But on Oct. 30, 1945, when he was 90, he wrote: "I have just received your letter with its proposal to come across the ocean to live with me. The same idea has occurred to other women. Put it out of your inconsiderate head, once and forever, as they have had to. No woman shall ever live with me again in that sense . . . the scandal in the village, the degradation to literature, the insult to Charlotte's memory would be such that I would be justified in shooting you if there is no other way of preventing you from crashing my gates." Making Young Friends But earlier, and in a tender er mood, he had told her: "Love me as long as you can, but make young friends." I Other choice Shavian comments: Wall Street Chatter New York - IUPD - The odds have swung strongly in favor of a rising stock market throughout most of 1961, ac cording to Clark, Dodge & Co. Technical and credit factors point clearly in this direction, it says, and should be joined by improving business before the new year has lasted very long. In fact, business may start its upturn late in t h e first quarter. Roger E. Spear, president of Spear & Staff, Inc., pre dicts that 1961's low for the Dow-Jones industrial average will be in the 570-600 area and will occur in the first quarter. The high, he says, may be 670-700 in the third quarter. Standard & Poor's lists the following as candidates for dividend increases: Central Il linois Public Service, Com mercial Credit, Glens Falls Insurance, Long Island Light ing, McGraw-Hill, Montana Dakota Utilities, Pacific Gas & Electric, Potomac Electric Power, Revlon, and Southern Co. It says that Interstate De partment Stores may split the stock. , Thomson & McKinnon lists six aerospace stocks having outstanding merit as growth equities and "down-to-earth" values: Boeing, Grumai), Mar tin, McDonnell, Northrop and United Aircraft. - Son-in-law of Ashland Couple in Television Ashland - Don Mowat, son-in-law of Mr. and Mrs. D. A. Peterson, 750 South Walker ave., Ashland, is appearing as the prosecuting attorney in the television series, "The Verdict Is Yours." He also plays a similar role in the TV serial "A Day in Court." The Los Angeles attorney who lives in Canoga Park, Calif., with his wife, Norma, and 18-year-old daughter, Ali cia, is a frequent valley vis itor. Mrs. Mowat grew up in Ashland where she attended the public schools in the late '20s and early '30s. A clever young woman has to choose between stupid and vigorous young men and clever and-shall I say goatish old ones." On love "It does not last because it does not belong to this earth; and when you clasp the idol it turns out to be a rag doll like yourself." On life "Learning to live is like learning to skate; you begin by making a ridiculous spec tacle of yourself." On mankind "The fear of God may be the beginning of wisdom, but the fear of man is the begin ning of murder." On himself "Saint Joan is finished (ex cept for the polishing): A magnificent play ... I am certainly a wonderful man."
