(Register i Tribune syndicate, 1!S0) Adam's Rib Apl Name tor This Plant Once a man by the name of Adam, who reportedly lived in a beautiful garden, was supposed to have lost a rib, and everyone, ever since, has been glad he did. Whether you believe it or not is not the point of this article, but the fact remains, that the story persists, and long has stimulated the im aginations of men and wo men. Now, it has once more been revived by alert ad writers who wish to sell the leaves of a plant that bears a strange resemblance to "Adair's rib." The ad writer calls this leat Adam's rib because, when the leaf is detatched from tha parent plant and pinned to a window curlain or laid on a dry desk or table, it will send out tiny green sprouts which grow into good sized plants. No fuss, no pot, no water, no soil. As if the coined phrase were not enough, tha ad writer enlarged on it and came up with such intriguing descriptive words as "Magic leaf" or "miracle leaf." 'Plant Children' Should you buy one of these leaves, the directions on tha label would tell -you that tha little "plant children" sprang from the "original rib", and that each can be cut off as a separate plant. The peculiar thing about the entire deal is that what the man said was true. He is handing out the "correct dope." There are many people who have a plant growing in their own yards that they never recognize as Adam's rib. Of course, as is natural with so many common things, thero are many common names. some of which give no indi cation as to the real natura of the object. In some sections Adam's rib is called "cathedral bells," because of the greenish col ored, bell-shaped blossoms. The little "bells" look mora like tiny lanterns than bells, so "lantern plant" became an other common name. ' The flowers are borne in, clusters during the late fall or winter months. The iarga leaves are thick and fleshy, and notched around the outer edges. It is from these notches the baby plants spring when the leaf is laid on a desk. Purple yeins in the leaves are) usually present. Other Names Because of its ability lo grow numerous plants from a percn on a window drape. someone thought the plant should rightly be named "chandelier plant." Later, ob serving the thin, paper-like blossoms, someone else thought it should be named "floppcr." The plant, by what ever name, is really a tropi cal perennial belonging to tha ltgwort family, and is, closely retatea to the old-fashioned "hen and chickens;" the plant that was usually a part of grandma's garden. But with all the cleverness we have in selecting descript ive names and the originality of an alert ad writer, tha name "Adam's rib" must bo considered the winner. II CLEARANCE SPECIAL! Sawdust Tested For Boxboards Corvallis - Sawdust from Douglas fir may become a new raw material for produc tion of corrugatca paper used in manufacture of boxboards, according to R. M. Samuels, in charge of studies on pulp and paper at the Oregon For est Research Center here. An expanding boxboard in dustry in the Pacific North west could provide a market for this wood residue. Tests at the Research Cen ter have indicated that paper made from Douglas fir saw dust does not have great strength, but is crush-resistant. Paper for corrugated parts of boxboards need not have con ventional properties of strength, but must be crush resistant, stated Samuels. Alder presently is being used in manufacture of cor rugated paper. Utilization of sawdust in making this paper would produce a higher re turn than mills now receive selling sawdust as fuel. In addition, other mills might find a market for sawdust, Samuels said. Other effects of sawdust on quality of paper are being In vestigated by wood scientists in this study. Research in pulp and paper at the Research Center is sup ported by a tax on timber i I 1 harvested in Oregon. The port of New York has 650 miles of waterfront. " ' '
